This boy is special - and he's taken the world by storm in 2022. Scheffler goes 12 under par with three holes to play before he can take that green jacket from Hideki Matsuyama.

Off he goes, walking like it's the simplest thing in the world, this game!

  2. Scheffler goes five clearpublished at 23:23 British Summer Time 10 April 2022

    Scheffler -12, Smith -4 (15)

Relentless from Scottie Scheffler. Two birdies in a row to put a healthy distance between himself and Rory McIlroy, this one coming at the par-five 15th.

The world number one and soon-to-be Masters champion rolls in after clipping on to the green to move five strokes clear. He's out to 12 under.

Cam Smith follows suit, clawing one of those dropped shots back.

Andrew Priestley: If Rory ever goes on to win a green jacket, that bunker shot on 18 was the moment that things turned. The exorcism that rid him of his Augusta demons.

More from Rory McIlroy: "It is what you dream about right. You dream about getting yourself in position. I wasn’t quite close enough to the lead I don’t think - Scottie is playing really well.

"To play as well as a I did and to finish like that is absolutely incredible.

"This tournament never ceases to amaze. That is as happy as I have ever been on a golf course (after the chip on 18).

"With Collin [Morikawa], we both played so well and for both of us to finish like that I was so happy for him. I have never heard roars like it on the 18th green, it was really cool."

  6. 'I'm getting the hang of this place' - clubhouse leader McIlroypublished at 23:15 British Summer Time 10 April 2022

    McIlroy -7 (F)

Rory McIlroy is the clubhouse leader after a 64 took him from +1 to -7.

He told Sky Sports: "I got off to a great start today and I kept it rolling. I knew I needed my best ever score here to at least have a chance. I shot 65 in the third round in 2018, and I knew I needed to go a bit lower than that and I did by one.

"It's probably not going to be enough but I can't ask any more of myself, I played a really really good round of golf, and it's the most fun I've had on a golf course in a very long time.

"When I birdied one, I thought this could be it today. I just stayed aggressive and kept hitting good shots and hitting good putts, played smarter on Amen Corner and made my pars and then finished like that.

"I'm getting the hang of this place after 14 years of trying, so whatever happens over the next couple of hours, I'll keep coming back and keep trying."

To the par-five 15th for the final pair... is Scottie Scheffler going to take on the water from way back on the fairway?! He's got a four-shot lead, but find the water here and Rory McIlroy will be heading to the range to warm up for a potential play-off.

The world number one creams his approach and is comfortably over. Tremendous.

Shane Lowry is still plugging away out there and he's picked up another shot on 15 with a birdie four moving him on to four under.

That actually puts him in a tie for third.

    Scheffler -11, Smith -3 (14)

Amid the McIlroy madness, Scottie Scheffler, the Masters leader, is still playing some splendid golf. He nails the fairway at 14 and then tickles a wedge just beyond the pin before watching it ease back down for a great birdie chance. He sizes it up, and polishes it off. Bingo!

Scheffler goes four clear. Cam Smith, who bogeys, is going in the other direction.

That is the second-lowest 18-hole score in a major of Rory McIlroy’s career and first since a 63 in the first round of The Open in 2010.

Birdie chance for England's Danny Willett on the 16th. Just right.

Rory is punching the air and he throws his club into the bunker! He caps his Masters in the most sensational style. He hugs his caddy Harry Diamond. Both hands in the air, to take the clubhouse lead with a record-equalling 64, with a birdie from the bunker at the last!

    Wow!

    McIlroy -7, Morikawa -3 (18)

Oh. My. Days. What scenes. Rory McIlroy chips out of the sand and watches his ball disappear into the middle of the hole, before chucking his sand wedge into the bunker as he celebrates wildly.

Listen to that roar. It is reverberating around the Augusta National. Will Scottie Scheffler be spooked by that?

The Northern Irishman will sign for a 64 to match the lowest final-round total in Masters history.

Cam Smith goes for a similar approach from right on the bank but doesn't get the reverse he was after. The wedge gets a whack in frustration.

So long as Scheffler does't make any mistakes on the way home he is going to land his frst major at the 10th attempt.

He is another of this extraordinary generation of young players that have catapulted themselves to the top of the world stage in golf, at 25 years of age.
