But Scottie Scheffler quickly followed suit.

This was Cam Smith's birdie a few moments ago...
Scheffler -11, Smith -7 (7)
Does Cam Smith have the room to make a full swing against with grandstand behind him? Doesn't look like it, he'll take a drop but even so it's a difficult chip from here, especially with Scottie Scheffler lurking on the green for birdie...
Smith trickles it up to within a few feet. Superb.

Image source, Getty ImagesIt's been hard going for Shane Lowry but a birdie on eight means he's now right back where he started his day on two under.
The former Open champion needs to put his foot down now and start stringing some birdies together to try and put some heat on the leaders.

Right of the green from Scottie Scheffler with his second at the par-five eighth, while Cam Smith overshoots the dancefloor with his third shot after clipping out of the bunker. He sends a few seated patrons scrambling to their feet to avoid it.

Image source, ReutersRory McIlroy is on the 12th tee. Are his nerves starting to jangle yet? There's been no sign of it so far he really is swinging his clubs with total freedom.
Here he goes, whipping a eight or nine iron over the daunting presence of Rae's Creek right onto the green. It's a long putt for birdie and that's not got quite enough oomph behind it. Par ain't bad mind.
Scheffler -11, Smith -7 (7)
Cam Smith thuds his driver into the turf in frustration after leaking it slightly right at eight, may well have to get his bucket and spade out to retrieve that one.
Scottie Scheffler is currently as cool as the ice in your Arnold Palmer.
Rory McIlroy chips in for birdie on the 10th hole to move four under
As nonchalant as you like.
Is this the point where Rory McIlroy starts to believe that anything could be possible later today?
Remember there's an audio feast awaiting if you tune into BBC Radio 5 Live right now.

Image source, Getty ImagesCam Smith's mullet is flowing out the back of his cap like a superhero's cape in the Augusta breeze, and the Australian shows his superhuman touch with a tidy putt to make birdie at seven.
But Scottie Scheffler can hit straight back here. And he does. Captain America is not fazed.

In it goes.
McIlroy -4, Morikawa -1 (10)
There may well be a bounce to his stride but Rory McIlroy looks in bother at the 11th.
He snaps his second right and now has a horrible up and down to save par. Here comes his chip....oh that's not bad at all. Really delicate hands from McIlroy just to get within 10-12 feet.
Big putt on the way.
Scheffler -10, Smith -6 (6)
Two decent tee shots at seventh, Cam Smith's outstripping the leader by 20 yards or so. But that approach from Scottie Scheffler, phwoar, a delightful wedge from the world number one that lands beyond on the green and then reels back in like a yo-yo to give him an uphill putt.
Cam Smith just tickles a sand wedge into the smooth stuff and comes to a half just above the flag.
Im -4, Lowry -1 (7)
Im Sung-jae gets his first birdie of the day to return to the four under mark he began his round on.
He's right there you know and he played his last 11 holes in five under yesterday - something similar would really make things interesting..
McIlroy -4, Morikawa -1 (10)

Grandstands filling very quickly in Amen Corner - this is where it can really be glory or ruin for a Masters challenge. Rory McIlroy flying along with five birdies on the card today.
It is an absolute picture, as always. You can see the bounce in his stride - I think he must be loving the buzz of being in the chase.
Fleetwood +1 Kokrak +1 (9)
Tommy Fleetwood's steady if unspectacular round continues at the ninth. Not a blemish or birdie on his card yet.
Schwartzel E, Thomas -3 (8)
Justin Thomas will have wanted a birdie on the par-five eighth, but that's a heck of a par he's pulled off after a visit to the trees then a big miss to the left to leave him a testing up-and-down on the short side.
A par keeps the round going though.
Conners -2, Willett -1 (9)
A shuffle of the feet and a shake of the head from Danny Willett on the par-four ninth aka Carolina Cherry.
Another birdie putt. Another par.
