    Kim -5 (10)

South Korea's Si Woo Kim is heading in the right direction this morning. He started the day on three under par and birdies on the first and 10th holes have lifted him to within three of the lead.

    Johnson -4, Scott -2, Leishman +8 (6)

Ooo! A knee-bend of frustration from Dustin Johnson after his birdie putt lips out on the sixth and he has to settle for par. That looked in all the way.

  3. Gooch turns in 34published at 09:55 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Gooch -6 (9)

A nice, solid start from Talor Gooch with two early birdies followed by pars all the way as he reaches the turn in a two-under 34.

He's just two off the lead and could post a decent number if he keeps this form up down the back nine.

  4. Niemann birdiepublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -3, Niemann -2, Hatton -2 (5)

On to the first of the Old Course's two par-five holes. The fifth.

Scottie Scheffler goes a touch wayward with his second and comes up short of the green in a bit of rough. A wedge on to 20 feet but two putts from there equals a par.

Tyrrell Hatton also has a 20-footer to get moving but his effort pulls up three inches short of the hole. Five straight pars to start for the Englishman.

It's left to Joaquin Niemann to show them how it's done. A birdie.

  7. Birdie for Scottpublished at 09:44 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Johnson -4, Leishman +8, Scott -2 (5)

Dustin Johnson finds the bunker to the left of the green on the par-five fifth but manages to escape the sand. He's left with a long birdie putt and trundles it up to within three feet of the pin to make par.

Adam Scott is quietly climbing this morning, he birdied the third and claws back another stroke at five to move to two under.

  8. Casey on birdie trailpublished at 09:44 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Casey -4 (6)

Back-to-back birdies for Paul Casey at five and six as he starts to make a front nine move again.

He birdied these two holes yesterday as well on his way to a four-under front nine, before falling away coming home - he'll be looking to get a good full 18 in today.

The Open 2022: Tiger Woods finds the burn to make double bogey on first hole

It was a horror start for Tiger Woods, and it never really got any better in his first round - admittedly in the much tougher conditions.

The crowd would love to see a response though, but can Tiger get that leg rested and recovered enough to make a move today?

It's quite a quick turnaround after spending over six hours out on the course last night, but if anyone can do it....

  10. 'Boring golf'published at 09:32 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -3, Niemann -1, Hatton -2 (4)

It's often hard to spot where the fairways end and the greens start on the Old Course, such are the humps and bumps on the enormous putting surfaces.

Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton and Joaquin Niemann all find the greener part of the fourth hole in two shots and take two more for pars all round again.

It's the Rory McIlroy "boring golf" approach. But it's working.

    Casey -2 (5)

Now then, here's a man taking advantage of the more generous conditions. Five holes in and Paul Casey has claimed a second birdie of the day after a gorgeous approach shot from the Englishman on the par five.

  12. Armitage flying at the turnpublished at 09:26 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Armitage -4 (9)

That's the way to finish a very tidy front nine! Marcus Armitage cards another birdie as he hits the turn to reach four under.

The ninth green is gettable from the tee and he comes up just short of the smooth stuff, but clips on to within five feet and then strokes away for a third birdie of the day. The putter's sizzling.

    Gooch (-6) 7

It's not especially quick out there again. It's almost two hours since Talor Gooch's group started and they had a fair old wait before playing their approach shots at seven. Mind you, it doesn't look to be bothering the American, who feathered a chip to inside 15 feet to set up another birdie chance... but again it slips just past.

The BBC Radio 5 Live team have been providing updates across the morning and they are now heading out on to the course in preparation for today's live commentary, which starts at 11:00 BST.

Looks like they are fearing a day of prolonged rain.

You can listen to that by clicking the link on this very page. Happy listening.

    Scheffler -3, Niemann -1, Hatton -2 (3)

Scottie Scheffler is playing the Old Course for the first time this week and has conceded he hasn't worked out how to play a number of holes. He looks to have the third sorted though, although I bet he thought his second might pull up a little closer to the hole after firing at the pin.

Two-putt pars all round for his group.

  16. DJ drive hits a fanpublished at 09:08 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Johnson -4, Leishman +8, Scott -1 (3)

Dustin Johnson bounces back from that opening bogey by joining Adam Scott with a birdie at three to move him back to four under for the tournament, but finds an obstacle off the fourth tee...

The American slices a drive that bounds down the right and whacks an unsuspecting fan on the back of the leg as he's walking the other direction. He looks down like he's been nipped by a mosquito.

  17. Postpublished at 09:05 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Casey (-2) 4

Ach, a birdie chance slips by for Paul Casey on four. A splendid second shot on left him with 12 feet but the ball refused to disappear underground at the first attempt. He's still in good shape, but this is the time to make a score.

St Andrews is a golfer's paradise in many ways, not least for those who love to trawl shops looking for a keepsake from their stay in the home of golf.

Clubs, merch, vintage bags, history books - whatever you want from the world of golf, you can find it by pottering around the town. Now how do I expense a set of hickory clubs?!

  19. Double trouble for Niemannpublished at 09:00 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -3, Niemann -1, Hatton -2 (2)

Joaquin Niemann fans look away now. He's having a horror show on the second.

He found a fairway bunker off the tee but could only knock his ball out sideways. Punishment taken. He's a little short with this third though and faces a tough 30-footer up and over a huge ridge for par. His caddie helpfully points out a spot he should be aiming for on top of that hump.

But he doesn't hit his putt and the ball wanders off to the left and finishes further away than when he started. His bogey putt is up and over that same hummock. This time he makes sure. But he's now got 10 feet for a double... gutsy putt.

Tyrrell Hatton and Scottie Scheffler, after watching the carnage, take two putts for pars.

  20. Postpublished at 08:52 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -3, Niemann -3, Hatton -2 (1)

The rain is still falling as Tyrrell Hatton fires from the rough and finds the back of the second green. In fact, it's getting a little worse out there. Hatton reaches for the brolly and his caddie zips up the top of the bag to try and keep the clubs dry.

The flags on the pins are hanging limp so there's no wind to blow this away. Scottie Scheffler fires at the pin. Straight over the top, touch of spin. Birdie chance coming up.
