    Johnson -3, Leishman +7, E (2)

Dustin Johnson recovers from that opening bogey with a par at the second, despite leaking his drive into the rough on the left. He's on the green in two, a tidy two-putt and on you go.

Awful start for Marc Leishman, however, who follows a double bogey with another dropped shot at the second.

  2. Making his move?published at 08:48 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Gooch (-6) 6

Having speared his second shot near enough pin-high right on the far five fifth, Talor Gooch has a sniff here. He somehow dug out a chip from a horrendous lie to give himself a mid-length putt for birdie. Can he add another splash of red to go within one of the lead?

Not quite. His effort slips past.

  3. Postpublished at 08:45 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -3, Niemann -3, Hatton -2 (1)

Joaquin Niemann squirts a low drive off the second tee. His ball never gets above 30 feet off the ground. It scuds along the fairway but that's not stopping before it reaches a sandy end. All about the position of the ball in the bunker because there is an eight-foot high face to that trap.

Tyrrell Hatton goes high and right and into wispy rough. Scottie Scheffler is right down the middle.

  4. Bogey for Schefflerpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -3, Niemann -3, Hatton -2 (1)

If you're just joining us, the pin on the first has been placed just seven yards over the Swilcan Burn that meanders across the front of the green.

Scottie Scheffler makes sure he clears the water-filled ditch and is left with a 40-footer back for birdie. Doesn't hit the putt though and leaves himself a testy six-footer for par.

Joaquin Niemann is also long and then, perhaps swayed by the speed of Scheffler, races his birdie attempt six feet past.

Tyrrell Hatton was boldest, finishing pin-high, 12 feet to the right. Doesn't like his attempt though and is walking after it as soon as he hits it. Tap-in par though.

Scheffler to tidy up... nope. Straight left off the bat. Bogey start.

    Niemann... slightly uphill, in. Par.

  5. Off the markpublished at 08:36 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Casey -2 (2)

Someone's sharp this morning. Two holes in and a first birdie for Paul Casey. The Englishman rolls in confidently from six feet.

  6. Armitage on the risepublished at 08:35 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Armitage -3 (6)

It's a flying start to day two for England's Marcus Armitage, who's just made back to back birdies.

The 35-year-old made it St Andrews in the final qualifying event and began his tournament with a one-under 71 on Thursday.

After four successive pars this morning, he's rolled in for birdies at five and six to reach three under.

  7. Birdie for Goochpublished at 08:31 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Gooch -6 (3)

Up on the third and American LIV rebel Talor Gooch is on the birdie trail. He pops one in on the third and he joins Rory McIlroy in joint second, two behind the leader Cameron Young.

  8. Bogey start for Johnsonpublished at 08:30 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Johnson -3 (1)

Playing partner Marc Leishman hitting it into the burn may have scared Dustin Johnson as he plays very safe with his approach to the first.

He's left himself miles for a birdie putt but his eyes will have been fixed on the burn just behind the flag, so naturally his putt comes up five feet short.

It's not a bad stroke, but not exactly a confident run at the hole and it breaks left right at the death as Johnson starts with a bogey.

  9. Pin-seeking Paulpublished at 08:29 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Casey -1 (1)

Mr Casey is looking to get motoring on the second hole. An exquisite iron hops forward and then puts the brakes on, about 10 feet from the hole. Big birdie chance coming up...

  10. On the tee from the USA...published at 08:27 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -4, Niemann -3, Hatton -2 (08:25)

There's a great little practice putting green down the side of the first tee on the Old Course.

Scottie Scheffler is hitting a couple of putts before heading for his 08:25 tee-time. The world number one misses a four footer and drags his ball back for another go. In it pops. Satisfied with that, the American saunters over to take shelter under the huge umbrella protecting the starter and collect his scorecard.

We didn't see much of this group in round one but hopefully the cameras will focus in today.

Scheffler up first, low, down the middle right. Joaquin Niemann up next. Bit more central.

Tyrrell Hatton in his trademark hoodie, bunts his ball between the two.

  11. Casey opens with parpublished at 08:19 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Casey -1 (1)

England's Paul Casey had the fastest of starts in round one, reaching the turn at four under par. His round than faltered on the back nine.

He starts today at one under and is looking at a 50-footer for birdie on the first. He gives it a decent look but the ball sidles by on the left to leave a tap-in par.

  12. Will DJ call the tune?published at 08:15 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Johnson -4

Dustin Johnson could be a danger today in these conditions, and after a very easy 68 yesterday.

DJ lashes a long iron down the first and will no doubt be attacking this flag looking for a fast start.

  13. Slow play - get involvedpublished at 08:01 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    #bbcgolf

A scourge of the modern professional game? Or just one of those things we have to put up with - particularly at the Old Course?

Paul Lawrie's group was round in four hours, 22 minutes yesterday. The Scot was first out so could set the pace. Two hours for the first nine, slightly longer for the back nine.

Tiger Woods and Matt Fitzpatrick. Out in the thick of it, six hours and 10 minutes.

Yes there are double greens, driveable holes and a compact course for the players to all squeeze into but six hours and 10 minutes...

When Tom Kidd won the first Open played here in 1873, they went round twice, in a day. In October. And they started around 10.30 in the morning. Yes, there were only 27 players as opposed to 156 today but even so...

Anyway, thumbs up for happy with pace of play. Thumbs down for not. And hit us at #bbcgolf with your ideas of how to speed this up, or let us know if you're happy with it as it is.

  14. Garcia gets under waypublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Garcia +3

We've not seen much of Sergio Garcia, who had a disappointing first round yesterday and will need something special today.

The Spaniard is safely aboard the first green as he looks for an immediate birdie to get his round under way.

  15. Three under parpublished at 07:53 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

Admittedly we've only got 18 players out on the course, but there's not been a flurry of birdies so far in these kinder conditions.

Just three players are under par for their rounds right now.

  16. Watch Kim's incredible bunker shotpublished at 07:47 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

Speaking of Kim Si-Woo - watch his par on the 17th hole yesterday after an outstanding shot from the sand after first failing to escape from the infamous Road Hole bunker.

  17. Gooch climbs to thirdpublished at 07:45 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Gooch -5 (1)

A perfect start for Talor Gooch. The American goes drive, wedge, putt on the first and that means it's a birdie start.

    Simple game.

  18. Birdie start for Kimpublished at 07:44 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Kim -4 (1)

Nice start from Kim Si-Woo, who makes a birdie on the first to move to four under for the tournament.

That won't be the last birdie we see at the opening hole today.

  19. Watch a McIlroy masterclasspublished at 07:33 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    McIlroy -6 (14:59 BST)

The Open 2022: Rory McIlroy's best birdies in opening round

Rory McIlroy was in total control of his game on Thursday, with just one bogey, some accurate wedge play and his putting was out of this world.

He's been in contention for all three majors so far and he's now solved his slow starting problem - could this finally be major title number five?

  20. The weather forecastpublished at 07:28 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

When I arrived in St Andrews earlier in the week, there were hundreds of people on the West Sands beach, many even braving a dip in the sea. It was around 25C, although it felt warmer than that.

There was barely a bottle of suntan lotion left to be had in the local supermarket.

That all feels like a long time ago. The temperature is a more Scottish-like 12C this morning, and while it's early, it's not going to get much warmer as the day progresses.

In fact, those out later may also get a spot of rain with showers possible around lunchtime.

The wind? A light breeze is the order of the day. Nothing too much to trouble.
