Rory McIlroy's dreams of landing an elusive Masters title look to be over this year after a stormy day two at Augusta National saw play cut short and fans avoid injury from falling trees.

Three trees fell next to the 17th tee, moments before play was suspended in Georgia because of electrical storms.

Northern Ireland's McIlroy shot a 77 which puts him five over, with the cut projected to come at two over.

Brooks Koepka leads on 12 under from amateur Sam Bennett on eight under.

American Koepka, one of three overnight leaders with Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland, moved clear of the field with a five-under 67 on Friday in relatively good conditions.

Bennett, a 23-year-old American making his Masters debut, is his nearest challenger in the clubhouse after a four-under 68.

Rahm birdied the eighth and ninth holes to get to nine under before play was halted, while Hovland is at six under after 10.

  3. Stormy scenes at Augusta National on Fridaypublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 8 April 2023

Friday's early starters got through their rounds at Augusta National before play was suspended twice by the weather.

The first stoppage came at 15:10 local time (20:10 BST), but the threat passed quickly and play resumed after a 20-minute pause.

Increasingly gusty winds led to three trees falling at the side of the 17th hole, where many patrons were sat and forced to quickly move.

Augusta officials confirmed there were no injuries.

"The safety and well-being of everyone attending the Masters Tournament will always be the top priority of the club," added organisers.

American golfer Jason Kokrak was fuming to put it mildly in an interview with golf.com, external that Sandy Lyle was unable to complete his final ever round at The Masters on Friday.

Kokrak was reportedly very supportive of Lyle, with the American giving the Scotsman the honour on the final tee. After Lyle had found the fairway, and all three in the group had teed off, Kokrak put his arm round his playing partner in a show of respect.

About 500 patrons including all his family and friends (pictured above) were circling the green on Friday preparing to salute him after he had already received cheers after his tee shot, his second shot and third shot, which was a pitch from right of the green.

Now then. Sandy Lyle shouldn't be out there long today.

The Scottish veteran was preparing to take the final putt of his stellar career when the horn sounded to suspend play on Friday.

Lyle, 65, became the first British player to win the Masters in 1988 and recently announced he was retiring after playing once again at the scene of one of his greatest triumphs.

He is one of 39 players who must return to finish their second rounds on Saturday after play was eventually called off at 17:46 local time (22:46 BST) on Friday.

  6. Good afternoonpublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 8 April 2023

Welcome to out coverage of the Masters. We would of course normally be welcoming in the third round now with the cut having taken place but Friday's Augusta weather has impacted on that.

If you're wondering exactly what's on the menu this afternoon aside from 39 players returning to complete the second round, well it's rain.

And heavy rain at that. There are also going to be stronger winds out on the course and it's pretty cold out there as well.

The sort of outlook that's not uncommon in the north of England on a miserable January morning.

Mother nature of course could prove pivotal in deciding who wins the famous Green Jacket.

Leader Brooks Koepka, was probably in the clubhouse with metaphorical feet up and cigar on when things took a turn for the worse on Friday.
