  1. Bogey start for Matsuyamapublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Henley -5, Matsuyama -4 (1)

That's not how to start the day if you're so far behind looking to make a charge, as 2021 champion Hideki Matsuyama bogeys the opening hole thanks to a second shot that fell way short of the green.

  2. Hovland tees offpublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Hovland -8, Cantlay -6 (19:24 BST)

Here's Viktor Hovland. You can't miss him - he's pulled another loud outfit from the suitcase.

Not quite the eye-winching azalea holiday shirt of Thursday, but a jacket with three shades of bright green is quite startling.

    Anyway, here he goes...

    Uh oh.

    "Fore!" he screams.

That could be on the ninth fairway.

    Theegala -4 (8)

Is Sahith Theegala doing a Rory McIlroy from last year? There's usually one player that comes from nowhere on a Sunday and the American knocks in his fourth birdie of the day on eight to suggest it could be him.

  4. Can Hovland or Cantlay catch the leaders?published at 19:25 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Hovland -8, Cantlay -6 (19:24 BST)

For most of the past couple of days it has felt like a two-horse race between Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm was shaping up today.

    Viktor Hovland had other ideas.

The 25-year-old Norwegian, aiming for a first major which his talent has long promised, looked out of contention when he was three under after 10 in his third round.

Then he nailed five birdies in a row to fly up the leaderboard.

Hovland goes out alongside Patrick Cantlay, who also made moves with a 68, in a mo.

    Bennett -4, Morikawa -4 (1)

What a touch! Sam Bennett shows us again what he's all about.

The young American almost holes out a chip on the first after his approach rolls off the left of the green.

And then Collin Morikawa nearly does the same! The 2021 Open champ's startled expression is cracking - he was convinced it was going to drop.

Both men have to settle for pars.

  6. 'Rahm is up for this'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Koepka -11, Rahm -9 (19:33 BST)

    Trish Johnson
Eight-time member of the Team Europe Solheim Cup team

Rahm knows how difficult this golf course is so taking on the high tariff shot makes no sense whatsoever, you'll get no reward for the chance that you're taking.

I think he's thinking let's not bring double-bogey into play at all, it just give you a chance the whole way through.

But I thought he sounded relaxed, and he's up for this.

  7. Scheffler moving on uppublished at 19:20 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Scheffler -4, Fitzpatrick -3 (3)

    Scottie SchefflerImage source, Getty Images

World number one Scottie Scheffler follows his birdie on the second with another on the third as he makes a fast start to the final round.

He's going to need a bucket-load more of those just to catch the top two, never mind pass them.

US Open champ Matt Fitzpatrick has a birdie and two pars on his card so far.

  8. Postpublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Schauffele -3, Reed -3 (1)

Steady enough starts for Xander Schauffele and Patrick Reed. Both end up on the front edge with their second shots and get up and down for regulation pars to kick off with.

  9. Too far back?published at 19:13 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Henley -5, Matsuyama -5 (19:14 BST)

These two are six shots back which, as you'll well know if you've seen Sir Nick Faldo on the TV coverage, is a gap that can definitely be overcome around Augusta National.

More importantly for these guys though, you have to look at it as only four players above them and only two with sizeable advantages - and with big numbers just one bad swing away, they could be right in there at some stage.

  10. Postpublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Bennett -4, Morikawa -4

Speaking of Sam Bennett and Collin Morikawa... they're on the first tee.

Bennett showed his supreme confidence - and raised some eyebrows - by saying he felt he could win the whole thing when he was only behind Brooks Koepka in the clubhouse on Saturday night.

A third-round 76 ended those chances (or so it seems) but whatever happens today the 23-year-old American has enjoyed a dream debut at Augusta.

  11. Birdies birdies everywherepublished at 19:09 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Theegala -3 (5)

There are definitely birdies to be had out there. Sahith Theegala proves that with three in his opening four holes...

  12. Birdie start for Lowrypublished at 19:08 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Rose -3, Lowry -4 (1)

Great start from Shane Lowry, who almost eagles the first with a sensational approach. Birdie to open up with for the 2019 Open champion.

His playing partner Justin Rose also has a big birdie chance but sees his putt stay left. The Englishman sticks his arm out to signify that he thought that one was going to turn in.

    Young -4 (2)

Feels like we're going to see Cameron Young on the first page of the leaderboard at the majors for a good while to come.

The 25-year-old American dropped off the pace here with a third-round 75, but he's started hot with birdies on the first and second holes.

That lifts him back up to tied seventh in a five-strong group which also features amateur Sam Bennett and 2021 Open champ Collin Morikawa.

  14. Spieth being Spiethpublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Spieth -3 (5)

Watching Jordan Spieth is never dull and he's mixed a bogey with a following birdie to get back to three under with just one regulation par in his five holes so far.

Can't wait to see what he comes up with on the back nine.

  15. Postpublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 9 April 2023

    Bennett -4 (19:05 BST)

Sam Bennett, who enters the final round in a tie for seventh, can earn a five-year PGA Tour exemption with a win, but as an amateur, he cannot top-10 into the next open event nor earn any non-member FedExCup points.

A top-12 finish, would see him earn a spot in the 2024 Masters.

cenuijmu: The pin placements look pretty fair to be honest .. not overly punishing. The 18th though ... need to go long ... will catch some people out. Will it be a one shot lead going into it though ???

Andrew: We’ve had our bonus Round 3 appetiser, now for the main course. Final round, Masters Sunday, there’s nothing else like it.

For most of the last couple of days I'm not sure too many would have fancied playing the Augusta National but it's a positively balmy 15°C out on the course at the moment.

The manicured fairways and the blooming azaleas, look so much better with blue skies and a little bit of sunshine.

    Hatton +1 (14*)

Tyrrell Hatton's return to form this year was exemplified by his late dash up the Players Championship leaderboard last month.

The 31-year-old Englishman played the last nine in a record-equalling 29 to finish runner-up to Scottie Scheffler - and he'll need something similarly special at Augusta to climb into the top 10.

Hatton starts the final round with a pair of bogeys on 10 and 12, although he has clawed one shot back with a birdie on 13.

Now when it comes to Masters comebacks the likes of Sir Nick Faldo, Fuzzy Zoeller and Gary Player have all clawed back six shots to win.

So the likes of Viktor Hovland and Patrick Cantlay may still have plenty to say about who ends up Masters champion this year.

What do we reckon? Can anyone from the chasing pack do it or is this a Koepka-Rahm duel?
