    England head coach Eddie Jones:

"We wanted Japan to be at their best so we're so pleased with that game, it's the sort of game we needed.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game, I think possibly we got seduced a bit by the start.

"They had a few things go their way and got back into the game and it became an arm wrestle for a while.

"We had a team with 11 changes and there wasn't a lot of cohesion. You've got one or two players that are important to your team and no one's important to our team. But Owen Farrell made a difference for our team because he's an influential player."

    Japan head coach Jamie Joseph:

"We gave sloppy penalties away and allowed England back in which was a little bit disappointing, but I'm proud of the players all the same.

"Comments in the media helped our motivation. Eddie Jones' comments fired me up a bit but at the end of the day we still prepare how we prepare.

"It was a big experience for us and its exactly what we need as we get into the World Cup next year.

"Our mentality is slowly changing, we're starting to believe that we can take these bigger teams on and that's going to help us next year."

  5. 'The second half was fantastic'published at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

    FT: England 35-15 Japan

England's man of the match Maro Itoje speaking to SkySports: "Against any team in international rugby we know the opposition will have quality and Japan had a lot of quality, they didn’t give up.

"Their breakdown was a very strong game, they did well in that area in the first half.

"Eddie spoke at half-time with Dylan as well as Ford, they spoke to the team to try and get us back on track. We just needed to up it, they were beating us round the corner and winning the one on ones.

"Japan are a good team but we should be beating them. These guys are well drilled and they have a lot of talent.

"The second half was fantastic, mentality wise, attitude wise, we were a bit calmer in our positioning which allowed us to come back into the game."

I was hoping for George Ford to come out and command that team. It was difficult with 11 changes but he was caught in two minds a few times.

His goal-kicking was excellent but the personality that Owen Farrell brings to the game is incredible.

  8. 'Finishers made the difference'published at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

    England 35-15 Japan

England fly-half George Ford: "It was obviously very disappointing in the first half, our attitude wasn't quite there. That's not good when you're playing for England.

"The finishers made a massive difference, they're there to come on and give energy to the game, they swung the game our way.

"It was disappointing that it had to come to that, but that's what the squad is for."

    Good to see.

Japan's last Test against England was in 1987. Let's hope they get another invite sooner than this one.

  10. Big Joe Cokanasigapublished at 16:55 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

One try, 75 metres made, nine carries, one clean break.

Joe Cokanasiga had a decent debut, but is more about the style than the stats.

His combination of pace and physicality is not something that England's other wings bring to the party. I think he will be World Cup bound as a wildcard, if not a starter.

  11. 'Forty minutes of rugby'published at 16:50 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

    FT: England 35-15 Japan

    Danielle Waterman
Former England international on BBC Radio 5 live

We keep seeing 40 minutes of rugby from England. We saw 40 minutes in the second half against South Africa and 40 minutes in the first half against New Zealand.

Yes, it's disappointing but sometimes you have to find a way to win and they turned it around today.

  12. 'Dug themselves out of a hole'published at 16:50 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

    England 35-15 Japan

    Ugo Monye
    Former England winger at Twickenham

The scoreline doesn't tell the whole story, Japan have been brilliant today, their skill level and creativity was brilliant to watch.

England dug themselves out of a hole and it's that grit that will help them in the pool stages of next years World Cup.

  13. Postpublished at 16:48 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

By the way, Maro Itoje was named man of the match in a serious miscarriage of justice.

Michael Leitch was immense for Japan, rampaging all over the pitch.

    England 35-15 Japan

    Ugo Monye
    Former England winger at Twickenham

Very good, clinical play, eventually by England.

Japan did well with the initial hit but they couldn't stop the drive especially when the likes of Farrell join the maul.

England often looked rudderless in this match but they've gone back to basics, Farrell has settled nerves as has the kicking game of Richard Wigglesworth.

Japan appeared to have stemmed the momentum of England's rolling maul, but the hosts roll around the corner, find a weak point in the defence and Dylan Hartley is the rear-gunner who plonks down for the score.

George Ford is off kilter with his conversion.
