Well, that was a ferocious contest and a pretty exciting one.

Ireland's guile and ruthlessness got them over the line against a Scottish side that sparkled and infuriated in equal measure.

Plenty more rugby to come across the BBC this weekend and beyond.

Thanks for your company and enjoy the rest of your Saturday.

  2. 'We need accuracy over 80 minutes, not 40' - Townsendpublished at 16:44 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 13-22 Ireland

Gregor Townsend says he was disappointed his side could not sustain the pressure on Ireland over the entire game, despite a strong first-half performance.

"They're obviously disappointed, the effort the players put into the first-half was outstanding, how they implemented the game plan we worked on all week and put Ireland under pressure," the Scottish head coach said.

"We just didn't kick on in the second half, it was pretty flat for both teams, the energy dropped, we were disappointed with the execution, that's on my head as a coach.

"I felt we dominated that first half, a lot of that was through how we defended as well as how we attacked - it's a message for our players that we can play at that level and create more opportunities.

"But just that accuracy that's required to beat the top teams, that needs to be over 80 minutes, not 40."

  3. 'Sexton got a bit of treatment'published at 16:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 13-22 Ireland

    BBC One

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt said: "I think we just muscled our way through it. We restricted them to an intercept try and it was a massive defensive effort. Johnny Sexton got a bit of treatment out there and he got a stamp on the head but he is feeling better and we expect him to be back in the next couple of weeks.

"Scotland are a good team who play in a really positive manner."

On Joey Carbery's performance: "Throwing that intercept pass knocked his confidence a little bit but he recovered well and he is a guy that is growing. The more often he plays, the more comfortable he will be in the role."

namelessopinion: Disappointing end after a promising first half. Lost the momentum. Hats off to Ireland, they know how to get to grips, adapt and take the win.

brianchucky: Scotland losing that one because of poor execution on offense and no obvious attacking plan. Ireland went ahead and played to defend the lead but their intent was obvious from the onset.

  5. 'So many errors'published at 16:22 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 13-22 Ireland

    Andy Nicol
Former Scotland international on BBC One

Scotland's physicality was there in the first half, and so was the creativity. But there were so many errors in the second half they just lost momentum.

  6. We were 'too knackered' to deal with pressure - McInallypublished at 16:18 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 13-22 Ireland

Stuart McInally admitted the Scottish team could not deal with Ireland's pressure, and praised their "excellent" defence.

"We were too knackered, we couldn't really string a few phases together. That's credit to the Irish team, they put us under heaps of pressure, but we'll work hard and try and be better for next week," the hooker said.

"We felt really good in defence, marched them back numerous times then they scored two really cheap tries."

  7. Referee Poite 'doesn't seem to like us' - Laidlawpublished at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 13-22 Ireland

Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw has a few choice words for referee Romain Poite in his post-match interview.

"Romain Poite picked us up in the middle of the field, Sean O'Brien's reefed the ball out and he's given a knock-on right in front of him," Laidlaw said.

"He doesn't seem to like us, Romain. He refereed us against South Africa as well and we don't seem to see eye-to-eye. We're not going to blame him, we look at ourselves, and credit to Ireland."

  8. 'We have a lot of belief'published at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2019

    FT: Scotland 13-22 Ireland

Ireland captain Rory Best on BBC One: "We have a lot of belief in what we're doing and how good a team we are. That was a really tough game, and it was tough mentally in the build-up to it. We asked for a physical reaction and by and large we got that.

"We had a couple of chances and we took them and were quite clinical. We've got a lot of improving to do.

"Joey Carbery has flourished since moving to Munster and starting regularly. We trust the players to come off the bench and step up as Joey did."

  9. Scotland crushed in Irish vicepublished at 16:11 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2019

It wasn't pretty. It was an error-ridden second-half by Scotland but Ireland supplied the pressure and they had Scotland in a vice-like grip. I can't remember a mistake by Ireland in the second half which was in contrast to their performance in the first.

Ireland are not particularly pretty on the eye, there's nothing new there, but when they get their performance right they are very hard to beat and that's what happened today.

    FT: Scotland 13-22 Ireland

    Paul O'Connell
Former Ireland captain on BBC One

I don't think Ireland particularly played well.

Scotland were so accurate in the first half but it just flipped after the break. All of the hosts' momentum was lost and Ireland could slow the game down.

  11. 'O'Mahony shows his leadership'published at 16:09 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2019

Peter O'Mahony is the man of the match for his work rate throughout the field. Devin Toner was out but he stepped up to the plate and he has put his hand up again in showing what a great leader he is.

  12. 'Errors cost Scotland the game'published at 16:09 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2019

It's been another game where we could have won if we cut out the errors. Second half was really disappointing, too many errors in the wrong areas and we couldn't sustain the pressure we did in the first half. You've got to be ruthless - Ireland have taken their chances and Scotland haven't.

  13. Full-time Scotland 13-22 Irelandpublished at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2019

Job done for Joe Schmidts Ireland. Their canny game-management came to the fore in that second half, as they inexorably eased their way to a vital win.

Scotland played so much fine rugby, but made so many infuriating mistakes that killed their momentum. This one will sting for Gregor Townsend and his team.

Scotland win a scrum penalty and Russell kicks them down towards the Irish 22.

They can't retain the line-out, though. Dillane gets his paws on it and Ireland steal. That pretty much sums up Scotland's second-half performance. Maddening stuff from the hosts.

  16. 'Ireland immeasurably better'published at 77 mins

    Scotland 13-22 Ireland

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

It's been an immeasurably better Irish performance in the second half overall but especially in terms of imposing themselves physically on the Scots.

In contrast, I think Gregor Townsend will be bitterly disappointed with aspects of the Scottish performance not only in terms of knock-ons but they've conceded costly penalties that have allowed Ireland off the hook too often.

  17. Another Irish penaltypublished at 76 mins

    Scotland 13-22 Ireland

Jamie Ritchie blazes into a ruck from the side and Ireland have a penalty and the ball in Scottish territory.

The flanker didn't have much choice - if he didn't attempt some sort of clear-out, Ultan Dillane was going to win a turnover.

We have to score pretty sharp - why are we kicking away possession? We have to score twice to win, you've got to find a way to get Russell and Kinghorn into the game.
