England are into the last eight thanks to tonight's result. The only thing left to figure out is who they will play in the quarter-finals. Australia are looking most likely on form and world ranking.

There will be some concern over possible injuries as well for Eddie Jones with Billy Vunipola and Joe Marler among those limping out of the fray tonight.

But England 2019 edition has already gone further than the class of 2015.

England flanker Lewis Ludlam speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I came on a little sooner than I thought, but it was another really enjoyable night out there. There is stuff to work on and I think there is more in us, but to get a result and know that there is still more to come is positive.

On Lavinini's red card: "I thought the game was refereed excellently. That is the law now. It is harsh, but player safety is paramount. Argentina are a really passionate team and they ramped it up as soon as they went a man down."

It's a little bit like taking Richard Hill to the 2003 World Cup, he didn't play until maybe the semi-final. I have no problem with that whatsoever, particularly with someone like Jack Nowell who has so much cover across the field, so much energy.

But with that energy there is ability to break defences, to score tries and to make significant differences in the game. Can he be the difference between winning and losing? Certainly Richard Hill was. I would have Jack Nowell in any big game you could throw him in.

Certain individuals have the ability to play in that environment and I believe Jack Nowell has that.

England head coach Eddie Jones on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Look, we're exactly where we wanted to be, we're 15 points after three games. We've played in front of a fantastic crowd at Tokyo Stadium and it's another great day for the World Cup.

"We just need to simplify our game a little bit. With them having one off we were probably just trying to push the game a little bit too much and we're a bit rusty after two easy games and a long break and that came out a bit. Second half we got a bit better rhythm."

On Billy Vunipola going off at half-time: "I think he had too much Kobe beef, mate!"

Argentina coach Mario Ledesma: "Well, obviously after the red card it became really hard. We made many easy mistakes that we could have avoided, especially in the second half. We couldn't build momentum and we were with a guy less.

"The commitment of the boys was incredible and lasted the whole game. Like I say, it became too difficult, but they never stopped fighting."

England fly-half George Ford said: "We are happy with the result. As always, there are areas we can get better at, but that is the exciting thing because we can get better.

"We probably lost our way a little bit in terms of building pressure but I thought we got it back at the start of the second half and we finished well.

"We wanted to play to our strengths a bit more and not get seduced by the space too much and, at the start of the second half, we did that."

England scored tries basically because Argentina ran out of gas. They did look like they were struggling to get into their pattern and make life easy for themselves.

We've got to mention Billy Vunipola and the fact he didn't play second half. If him or Farrell aren't playing for England it's a significantly different proposition.

Is there an argument to say England need to be tested here? If they don't and all of a sudden they go into a quarter-final and then get tested, it's a very different proposition - your backs are against the wall. England have yet to be tested in any way.

England captain Owen Farrell: "It was scrappy at times, I thought there was a decent amount of control, but it got frantic at times and Argentina got back in but our pressure told in the end. The bench was great, but it is not just them. The full 31-man squad has been outstanding so far

On his own place-kicking after he missed four first-half shots at goal: "I fixed it up at half-time, but will do some work on it in the week"

Philip West: That’s as easy a passage as England have had into the quarters as I can remember. After the campaigns of 2007, 2011 and especially 2015, we’ve finally turned up to a World Cup in competitive shape. Very pleased for Jones and the players.

This is about progress for England. They do not want to be peaking against Argentina or France. They don't want to be peaking until the knock-out stages. England are finding their feet. They are progressing from week to week and they are looking more assured.

Players we were hoping were going to come in, Slade, Mako Vunipola, Nowell, they looked comfortable. If they get a start versus France, all of a sudden we're talking about a full squad who look at home playing on the top level. You can't ask for anything more from this England squad at the moment.

It was a professional performance. Argentina came at England in the first 10 minutes but the red card changed the game and took the heat out of it.

England kept their shape and ground Argentina down and they didn't have to get out of third gear.

England didn't need to be anywhere near their best. The game was gone after 20 minutes when Tomas Lavanini was out of control. Argentina have ended up being out of the World Cup.

I think they showed some class today England. Given the fast start that Argentina came out with, putting them under pressure for the first minute or two, England bounced back. From the first try from Jonny May that was pretty much it, England were in complete control.

I thought the discipline was exceptional, only seven penalties in the game for England. Loads of positives, not the perfect performance but loads of positives for France.

Argentina have done their best but with a man down for the best part of an hour they have been broken down.

You can sense their pain but they are authors of their own misfortune to a degree.
