  3. 'We weren't at our best' - Townsendpublished at 19:10 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    FT: England 23-29 Scotland

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend on BBC Radio Scotland: "Hugely proud. I don't know if it's this fixture, but it got me emotional at the end.

"To see the way the players came back, in a venue we struggled for a lot of occasions, shows what a team we have. We weren't at our best today.

"The game needed to break out, and it wasn't until the last 20 minutes where we started to force the issue in a positive way and move the ball to edges - that was great to see.

"To win from behind, when you've only got five minutes, to score such a good try makes it all the more special.

"England are a top, top side. Coming to Twickenham for any team is really difficult. You get belief from how you've gone against a team in the past. 2018 unlocked opportunities here.

"If teams are going to kick a lot to us, then that gives us lots of opportunities to play. We'll get a lot of confidence from how we took those opportunities.

"The tries were all remarkable. It was brilliant to see Duhan - I remember when we played Jonah Lomu and he ran faster than everyone else - it was a fantastic turn of speed and balance.

"Ben White's [try] was opportunistic and a great finish. Sione to Huw's was very similar to what I've seen at Glasgow, and then the last try is a team try. I'm so proud of the team.

"We've got an outstanding defence coach in Steve Tandy, but ultimately, it's the players that deliver. That last sequence in defence - to be disciplined within that, to stay in your shape after such a tough game, was great.

"We have to be better - that wasn't our best performance. That's now the exciting thing for us, that we can grow more in this tournament."

With three home games to come, Scotland will think they have a real chance.

You play a Welsh team next week in total disarray. Scotland were poor at times, they can definitely improve.

It's a great thing for Gregor to have knowing that he's got players like Hamish Watson that can come in and make this team better.

Ken Munn: Pains me to ask the question, but is it time for Maro Itoje and Owen Farrell to be given pats on the back and be told they are not required in the squad any longer?

Matt Dawson said on BBC Radio 5 Live that Steve Borthwick has dug a hole for himself as he named Owen Farrell captain. It is a much bigger call dropping the skipper.

The teams will pick apart that game and there will be errors. But I think for both sides the positives outweigh the negatives.

Who would have thought, come to Twickenham and get a bonus point? But Scotland have been here before, the game against Wales next week takes on more meaning now.

  7. 'We were in the fight all the way through'published at 18:58 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    FT: England 23-29 Scotland

Speaking to ITV, England captain Owen Farrell said: "We started 11 days ago. There has been massive improvement and I thought we did it in large parts. There is some stuff we need to get better at but we will look at it.

"For now, we will give credit to Scotland for sticking at it like they did. They played well and scored that try in the end but it never felt like we went away, we caused them some problems and we'll make sure we build on it.

"The thing we were gong to do, regardless of the result, was get better and we will do that. There were blips but it felt like we had good energy and were in the fight all the way through."

  8. 'We have to stay positive'published at 18:55 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    FT: England 23-29 Scotland

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England lock Maro Itoje said: "We are ultimately disappointed you know, we just weren't good enough today. Fair pay to Scotland. There were a few things we got wrong as a team but we can fix them.

"There was a few penalties in the middle third and kept us in our half. Line breaks here and there and we need to stay connected in defence

"This is the first game of a new coach and campaign. We wanted a win and fell short. We have to stay positive."

  12. 'Smith Farrell axis does not work'published at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    FT: England 23-29 Scotland

    John Barclay
Former Scotland captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

The Marcus Smith and Owen Farrell axis doesn't work. England were great going forward but how many times did we see Marcus carry the ball to the line? He did that as no one was there to pass to.

If you have someone outside, someone who can bring the power game, and you can change distribution. You saw Smith and Farrell carrying and while they are smart rugby players, they aren't the strongest ball carriers

  13. 'There are positives but opportunities missed'published at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    FT: England 23-29 Scotland

    Matt Dawson
Former England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

I thought Marcus Smith stepped up and he got himself in more dangerous positions. Owen Farrell slotted in, I am not saying that is the answer, but I could see how it works. There are positives to take away with the England performance.

However, there were opportunities that I would expect senior international players to be making in the last knockings of the game. Whether that's drop goals, discipline, territory. If you are going to win a Test match you have to do that.

  14. 'I will take that one all day long'published at 18:44 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    FT: England 23-29 Scotland

Speaking to ITV, Scotland wing Duhan van der Merwe said: "We came here wanting to start the campaign on a high. After the first half, we knew we had more in us and came out for the second half with a bang and managed to get the win over England so we are buzzing.

"They scored quite early and we knew we had to stay in the fight and we got some points on the board and responded. As a winger you don't get a lot of opportunities to score so I needed to take them.

"I was quite surprised how I got my first [try] but I will take that one all day long. We spoke about getting our first win of the Six Nations and next week we need to take some confidence from that."

    It was utterly sensational.

Scotland defended heroically at the end. The tackle stats are off the scale - Matt Fagerson made 27 tackles!

Scotland were brilliant in attack in four moments, and scored four tries. They have this indomitable spirit and self-belief, it was a privilege to watch it.

Defensively, having so little possession, they were solid. It was a great steal to win it at the end.

In the build-up we knew it was going to be tight. I didn't see that on week one with the players throwing the kitchen sink at that. That is a monstrous win for Scotland.
