Here we go then, it's nearly time for kick off.

Both sets of players make their way out onto the Twickenham turf.

Before the anthems, we'll have a minute's applause for some legends of both countries, who have died since the last Calcutta Cup meeting.

There is plenty of meat on the pre-match discussions at Twickenham.

Jasmine and Mark, pictured below, gave me their expectations of England's new era under Steve Borthwick.

Jasmine was mostly just glad to see the back of Eddie Jones, but expected Borthwick to pick a line-up with a less Eddie flavour.

Mark is happy that Borthwick is in charge but given how little time he has had since taking over in December, he doesn't have high hopes for today.

He will be happy as long as England get the basics right and show plenty of spirit today, then improve as the Six Nations goes on.

    It's intriguing.

Gregor Townsend has really gone for it with his team selection. He could have gone for Chris Harris at 13 - that would have been the more conservative selection, he's gone with Huw Jones. He could have gone with a favourite son, Ali Price, but he's gone with Ben White, a more attacking nine.

It's a terrific thing. England having won one of the last five - that will have been a big theme in their build-up. It's a perfect day for rugby. I'm giddy.

Glasgow captain Kyle Steyn starts on the wing for Scotland in the absence of Darcy Graham, and he's been chatting to BBC Scotland in the lead-up to this crunch game:

"I feel awesome," he said. "A game with so much history and rivalry at Twickenham - it doesn't get better than that.

"It's been good to get a solid run of games for Glasgow. We've been playing really well. Gregor has just asked us for relentless effort. We're expecting a lot of England kicks, so in the back three we'll be under a lot.

"There's a genuine belief in the squad. We know that if we execute our systems, we've got a really good chance. The boys are buzzing to get into it."

I think England will always be favourites to win at Twickenham. To be honest when I was a player I didn't really care about that stuff, didn't care about bookies odds.

I feel in the last couple of years there has been an embracing of hostilities and rivalries. This game will always mean more to the players and the public in Scotland. I think it is increasingly becoming a game where England want to stop the narrative of 'oh Scotland have won it the last four or five years'.

  9. Townsend's Scotland have restored old rivalrypublished at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    England v Scotland (16:45 GMT)

    Tom English
    BBC Scotland's chief sports writer

Gregor Townsend hasn't just won the Calcutta Cup in his time as Scotland coach, he's saved it. He's taken a rivalry that was every bit as beaten up as an heirloom on The Repair Shop and he's restored it. Three wins and one draw against England in five Tests on his watch? Townsend is Jay Blades.

For the longest time the record only showed England win after England win after England win. Nine England wins in a row from 1991-1999. Five wins in a row from 2001-2005. Another seven England victories in a row to 2017. Scotland had the devil's own job of scoring a try not to mind achieve a win in many of those seasons. That last Calcutta Cup before Townsend's arrival ended 61-21 at Twickenham.

Scotland are in a better place now than they have been in almost a quarter of a century, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything in the savage landscape of the Six Nations. Townsend has had some big wins, but not enough of them to make Scotland contenders. His team has ended massive losing runs at Twickenham and in Paris. They've won in Australia. They've played magnificently in near-victory against the All Blacks and have put 50 points on Argentina. And yet.

    Head-to-head

    • Scotland can win three games in a row against England for the first time since 1972.
    • England have won just one of the last five Six Nations meetings (D1, L3), following a run of seven successive victories before that.

    England's poor run

    • England have lost five of their last 10 Test matches, including their two most recent Six Nations fixtures - their worst run in the tournament since losing the last three games of 2018.
    • England have lost their last three opening round fixtures after winning five in a row previously.

    Scotland's away strength

    • Scotland have won five of their last seven away matches in the Six Nations - the same tally of victories as in their previous 43 championship fixtures on the road.
    • Scotland, however, did lose their most recent Six Nations fixture in Ireland and could sustain back-to-back tournament defeats away from home for the first time since 2018.

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England head coach Dick Best on BBC Radio 5 Live:

“Scotland are a very good team. Gregor Townsend has picked an in-form group of players and his side won’t be easy to play against.

"Both Edinburgh and Glasgow are playing very well in European cups and the players will be up for it in a big way. It’ll be a great test for the new England management.

“Steve Borthwick will have learnt plusses and minuses from Eddie Jones. Ludlam, Ben Curry and Chessum are all in good form. Hassell-Collins has had a very good season for London Irish. Anyone who follows Premiership rugby will know they are players who are in good form.

"Home advantage makes a huge difference but Scotland played us off the park last time. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of game plan Steve Borthwick employs, along with the captain Owen Farrell. There’s a lot to be gleaned from this game as to how England will play."

There are certain words already frequently repeated in the era of Steve Borthwick's England: excitement, pride and clarity.

The first two will no doubt be in abundance as England return to Twickenham to face their oldest enemy Scotland in the Six Nations on Saturday, but it is the third that will be decisive.

New Englands with revamped gameplans - particularly in attack - have often been promised in recent years and have come up wanting for lack of clarity.

    England v Scotland (16:45 GMT)

    Ugo Monye
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Twickenham is a place which has been a happy hunting ground for Scotland in recent years and I don’t think they will have any sense of nerves. They will be excited.

That’s the beauty of round one - everyone has had a pre-season and is feeling positive, no-one’s lost a game, been dropped or had a bad performance and everyone is expecting the very best of their teams.

Scotland will be aware of the bounce-effect of Steve Borthwick coming in but they will be really confident, but so should England.

The excitement levels are wanting to see this England team get fans on their feet and play with a sense of freedom. I couldn’t be any more excited about what the game will bring.

  18. The key decisionspublished at 15:54 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    England v Scotland (16:45 GMT)

The build-up to England's first game under former captain Borthwick has been disrupted by a raft of injuries which means Luke Cowan-Dickie, Courtney Lawes, Henry Slade, Tom Curry, Elliot Daly and Dan Kelly are all unavailable, while Manu Tuilagi has not been selected.

Ollie Hassell-Collins makes his debut on the left wing after scoring eight tries in the Premiership for London Irish this season, while Owen Farrell, reinstated as captain, starts at inside centre, with Marcus Smith at 10.

Jamie George has recovered from concussion to take his place in an experienced front row, with replacement hooker Jack Walker set to make his debut from among the replacements.

Scotland are missing several big names of their own including Hamish Watson, who misses out after only making his return from concussion for Edinburgh last weekend, while London Irish's Ben White is preferred to Ali Price at scrum-half.

Luke Crosbie makes just a second start in the visiting back-row alongside Jamie Ritchie, who captains Scotland for the first time in the Six Nations.

Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu start in the midfield, with British and Irish Lions centre Chris Harris on the bench.

Stuart Hogg starts at full-back despite not playing for Exeter Chiefs since 24 December because of a heel injury.
