    Babos 7-6 (7-4) 4-5 *Sharapova

If Maria Sharapova wants this second set, she is going to have to take it on her own serve.

And considering how that broke down at key points in the first set, taking this to a decider may be easier typed than done.

I'm starting to see Babos' legs shake a little after the point. This is going to become a mental battle as well as a physical one. Maria has been moving well enough - Babos hits the ball hard, but straight, so she hasn't had to chase down too many drop shots. The responsiveness isn't there the way it was the other night. The equilibrium isn't quite perfect.

Tenth seed Agnieszka Radwanska is through to the second round after victory over Petra Martic.

Radwanska, who has never got past the fourth round at Flushing Meadows, took just over an hour and a half to beat the Croat.

She'll face Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva next.

    Babos 7-6 (7-4) 3-2 *Sharapova

Timea Babos rips down the line on break point. The corridor of space was there, but the contact was not true enough.

The ball is snared on the tape and the chance is gone.

    Another break chance for Babos.

Sharapova dredges up an ace from somewhere deep in her locker.

    Back to deuce.

It's a very edgy game. This stadium is nowhere near as noisy as it was on Monday evening.

This is mental breakdown from Maria. She missed some really easy shots and now, on her own serve, she seems to be dwindling. Her body seems to be going and her legs are slowing. Her grip doesn't look too strong.

Maria Sharapova's coach Sven Groeneveld claps two meaty palms together and shouts some encouragement as his charge plonks wide to fall 15-30 adrift.

The Dutchman looks very tight as he watches on from the stands.

Sharapova wobbles onto deuce but she is not out of the woods yet. By a long way...

What is Hungarian for "get in!"?

By the sounds of Timea Babos at the end of that arm-wrestle of a game it is very similar to the English.

An escape from deuce and, with a decent portion of the 23,000 seats on Arthur Ashe occupied, can she steel herself sufficiently to see this out in two?

Sharapova's service game has been pretty tenuous for the first two rounds in this match. All she is staying even with is her fight - her competitiveness and her will to be out there on Centre Court.

Having experienced being away from tennis for almost two years - OK, it was for different reasons - there is something in your brain, the memory of what it feels like to win a Slam, it's there. It will be interesting to see how Maria's shoulder holds up but she will believe she can win this whole tournament and I believe she can too.
