That was a brilliant feat of escapology from Babos. She can play that point 20 times and not win it.

*Babos 3-2 Sharapova
Timea Babos - via a nutty point in which he fields a steepling lob with a fortunate framed smash - regains the break advantage.
This is not the clincial excellence that we saw from Sharapova on Monday.

Neither Sventlana Kuznetsova or Marketa Vondrousova are giving much away on Grandstand Court.
They've been neck and neck in the third and final set and Vondrousova, appearing in her first US Open, has just thumped down an ace to force Kuznetsova to serve to stay in the game.
And Kuznetsova has duly responded by holding her serve to force a tie-break.

Maria Sharapova mixes it up with some slice-and-dice forehand droppers into front court.
No dice on that occasion as the Russian drills down the line, past Babos and long.
But that variety might serve her well on the comeback trail.
A little bit of ring-rustiness in that service action though as it coughs up a double fault and two break points.
But an ace hammered down like a judge's gavel takes us to deuce.

Timea Babos is in a spot of bother at 0-30.
And that is not going to help at all.
The Hungarian's forehand gets off the leash to offer up 0-40 and three break points.
Babos stuffs two back into her racquet bag.
Second serve on the third, into a rally, bish-bash, thrust-parry and finally Babos plonks long.
We are back on serve.

We're down to two Brits standing at Flushing Meadows, as Aljaz Bedene exits in the first round.
Andrey Rublev serves out the match to set up a second round encounter with seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov.
The Brit found his feet as the match progressed but he didn't break Rublev once, and the Russian took full advantage of his second serve.

Timea Babos is looking bright and breezy.
The Hungarian bops away a winning forehand to wrap up the game to 15 with Maria Sharapova still struggling to find her timing.

Earlier, CoCo Vandeweghe had a discussion with the umpire over whether a certain word she'd just said constituted as an expletive.
Her argument was it "wouldn't be bleeped on TV" which, er, isn't strictly true.
And no, I can't tell you what the word was...
Anyway, since that tete-a-tete, Vandeweghe has rallied in the second set against compatriot Alison Riske, getting the early break and serving out the set to force a decider.

As Maria Sharapova referenced her jet-black crystal-studded get-up in her post-Halep interview, I feel it is important to offer up the sartorial notes.
Sharapova is a shade of peach for this daytime session, although it comes with a pair of black compression sleeves.
Maybe time for a costume switch.
She surrenders her serve rather meekly in the first game.

Ouch. Bedene faces break point in the third set and balloons a forehand over the baseline. Rublev clenches his first while Bedene troops back to the shade of his chair, with his US Open campaign on the verge of ending on the sparsely attended Court Eight.

Aljaz Bedene might have found his feet just a little too late in his match against Andrey Rublev.
He took the lead for the first time in the third set and started to push the Russian on his serve.
However, Rublev has had more than enough time to get his eye in - he pushes Bedene to deuce and, a second later, he's got the break.
Babos v Sharapova
Image source, EPATimea Babos was up at 25th in the world last year and 2016 was the first year that she has got beyond the first round at Flushing Meadows, eventually falling to Simona Halep in three sets in the third round.
As an interesting side note she is coached by Thomas Drouet, the Frenchman who was on the receiving end of John Tomic's anger when he was young Bernie's hitting partner back in 2013.
Babos to receive serve in the opening game.

Image source, Getty ImagesThe reaction to Maria Sharapova's arrival on Arthur Ashe in her first-round match was pretty much universally warm and welcoming.
I thought there might be some who thought that a player banned for using an illegal, performance-enhancing drug does not deserve a hero's welcome.
Babos v Sharapova
Image source, Getty ImagesAnother three Grand Slam titles.
Eleven months out after that little mix-up over heart medication.
And, on Monday, an astonishingly high-quality return to Grand Slam tennis as she downed second seed Simona Halep in three sets.
Next up for her is Hungarian world number 59 Timea Babos.

The Russian was a teenage champion here in 2006.
Quite a lot has happened since.
Riske 6-2 2-3 Vandeweghe
Image source, Getty ImagesTwentieth seed Coco Vandeweghe is a spot of bother here.
She has lost the first set to fellow American Alison Riske, who is ranked 27 spots below her at 49th in the world.
On serve in the second set, but no room for manoeuvre.
FY for your I, Vandeweghe is the daughter of a former Olympic swimmer and the granddaughter of a union between a Miss Universe and a New York Knicks basketball player.
That is one healthy looking family tree.

A new food stall is always exciting, and this was outside the media bus this morning. I asked if I could get a snack - "no ma'am this is just for the officers."
The bananas are very much the only healthy option for the NYPD...

Juan Martin del Potro, speaking to Eurosport: "It is so nice after all my injuries to come back and play in front of you.
"Please don’t make me cry this year!
"I think I play very smart in important moments. I serve good and my forehand is improving, they go fast as always. I need to keep improving.
"It is so special to play here and I try to keep playing my best tennis."

Juan Martin del Potro is telling the Arthur Ashe Stadium about what a big of Bruce Springsteen fan he is:
"I know he is playing a show on Broadway so if you can get some tickets for me, I will love it!"
If he can't get free tickets then the rest of us have got no chance!
