After Tuesday's washout, the sun made a welcome return to Manhattan this morning, which is handy as we have 87 singles matches on the schedule. Grand Slam tournaments can generally accommodate one day lost to weather, and the forecast suggests the worst is over for this US Open. Famous last words.

  2. Thiem & Berdych through to second roundpublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

Dominic Thiem made short work of Alex de Minaur earlier today, as he reached the second round courtesy of a 6-4 6-1 6-1 win.

The sixth seed was 1-0 up in the third set when rain curtailed play and it took Thiem just half an hour to tidy things up today.

He will play either Cypriot veteran Marcos Baghdatis or America's Taylor Fritz in the second round.

And Tomas Berdych got off to a winning start at Flushing Meadows, fizzing down 36 winners as he beat Ryan Harrison 6-4 6-2 7-6 (7-4).

    Millman 6-3 1-6 6-4 6-1 Kyrgios

And there it is. A slapped forehand goes long, and Nick Kyrgios' time at Flushing Meadows is over.

World number 235 John Millman has a warm handshake and words of comfort for his compatriot, who is now struggling to get his broken racquet back into his bag. Somehow, it's oddly fitting.

  6. Kyrgios struggles with shoulderpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

It's been an up-and-down performance for the 14th seed, complete with a barney with the umpire and a ruined racquet.

A sloppy first set was followed by a powerful second, before the Australian started to struggle with his right shoulder.

He retired from the Washington Open with a shoulder injury - and was booed off court by spectators - in the build-up to the US Open

The same shoulder seems to be troubling him against John Millman. Kyrgios got a ball boy to help him work the shoulder and, when that didn't work, he called a medical time-out.

He's in a real sticky situation and it'll take some nous to work his way out of this one - he's currently trailing Millman 6-3 1-6 6-4 4-1.

There's just three Brits left in this year's US Open, and all of them are in action today.

First up is Aljaz Bedene, the British number three and world number 48, who will take on Russia's Andrey Rublev on court eight.

This is Bedene's fourth US Open and he's only passed the first round once at Flushing Meadows, back in 2015.

Kyle Edmund and Cameron Norrie also begin their second-round matches today, playing Steve Johnson and Pablo Carreno Busta respectively.

Eugenie Bouchard was a bit surprised to be first up on Arthur Ashe today, and it wasn't a happy experience for her, as she lost 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 to Russia's Evgeniya Rodina.

Juan Martin del Potro is currently leading his first round match against Henri Kaasonen 6-3 4-4, and they'll be followed by Maria Sharapova, who takes on Timea Babos.
