OK, so we have lost Kyrgios and Fognini but if you want guaranteed entertainment, Dustin Brown can always deliver.

Everyone's favourite German-Jamaican has taken the first set 6-4 against Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci, and he's 3-1 up in the second.

    Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 6-7 (5-7) Del Potro

And that's that. A thunderous serve comes down, and Laaksonen can do nothing about that.

It's not been easy, or particularly pretty, but Juan Martin del Potro is through to the second round. His opponent gets a lovely round of applause as he departs.

    Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 6-6 (5-6) Del Potro*

A gorgeous, sliced backhand from Laaksonen looks like it might drop short - but it takes a little tickle off the net to beat Del Potro!

A service winner from Laaksonen takes us to match point number three, which means Del Potro will serve for the match...

A backhand goes wrong for Del Potro, before a firey forehand winner goes past Laaksone.

Another forehand error from Laaksonen takes Del Potro within a point of round two.

    Bedene 1-6 4-6 Rublev

Aljaz Bedene has only reached the second round once at the US Open, and that was back in 2015.

That wait might be continuing for a little longer - Andrey Rublev has taken the second set on court eight.

Another seed has perished... Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas (27) has been beaten 7-5 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 by Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur.

Ah. A 133mph, the quickest of the match, puts Del Potro back in front.

He's being given the run around by Laaksonen but another attempted forehand winner from the Swiss finds the net.

Laaksonen gets on the board in the tie-break courtesy of an ace.

Another lengthy rally goes this way and that, before Del Potro attempts a winner down the line - and he misses by an inch! All square.

Juan Martin del Potro is still handicapped by the legacy of that horrible run of wrist injuries. If you look at his backhand he lacks the flexibility he should have. He has developed a decent slice to compensate, but he cannot generate the heavy topspin that he once did.

There also seems to be an endurance issue. He does not push through matches as quickly and easily as he did in his younger days.

    *Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 6-6 (0-2) Del Potro

The first point of the tie-break goes Del Potro's way, as a big serve beats Laaksonen. It's only in by a whisker, though.

A long rally sees Del Potro pushed to his right but he stays in the game and Laaksonen caves first, working a forehand long.

    Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 6-6 Del Potro*

The courts are, according to several observers, much slower this year, but Laaksonen uses the new balls to good effect as he pulls Del Potro wide before spanking a volley beyond him.

Del Potro gives the racquet a filthy look as he drags a forehand into the foot of the net, but it's no good. A love hold from Laaksonen, and we're into a tie-break.

With nearly an hour on the match clock, Bedene has yet to earn so much as a break point, which doesn't bode well. Never the heaviest of hitters, he's struggling to find the consistent length that he relies on, allowing the rangey Rublev to tee off with his groundstrokes. It's hot out here and the players at least benefit from their seats being in the shade at changeover, albeit overlooked by a public seating area where spectators are relaxing and refuelling. In case the players weren't feeling exhausted enough.

    Delpo holds.

He's a game away from victory once again. And Laaksonen will be serving to keep himself in the match once again.

Laaksonen gets the advantage courtesy of a messy Del Potro backhand, and he holds as Del Potro slaps a forehand long.

Del Potro, annoyed with himself, thumps the ball high into the air - and it's caught very nicely by a hovering ball boy.

Svetlana Kuznetsova, who won the title as a teenager way back in 2004, is still fighting in the 2017 edition.

The Russian, now 32 and seeded eighth, has levelled up her match against Czech Marketa Vondrousova at 4-6 6-4.

Into a decider we go in that one.

A grumpy rearranging of the racquet strings from Del Potro as he hits a meaty forehand into the net.

He's got Laaksonen stretching behind the baseline before he comes shimmying forward and cracks a forehand beyond his opponent for deuce.

    *Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 4-5 Del Potro

Laaksonen has 15 forehand winners to Del Potro's fourth, and the 16th goes firing past the Argentine's nose as Laaksonen battles to stay in the set.

It's only a brief moment of respite, though, as Del Potro calmly serves his way to a hold. He's just a game away from a place in the second round.

On the men's side, there are opportunities like never before at this edition of the US Open. I have been here 15 years and can't remember anything like it.

All of last year's top five year-end players are missing from the draw and it is just fortunate that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are here to add some gloss to the event.

Can the likes of Dominic Thiem take advantage and prove that the Next Gen is all that it is cracked up to be?
