    Riske 6-2 3-6 4-6 Vandeweghe

CoCo Vandeweghe is through to second round at Flushing Meadows after a battling victory over fellow American Alison Riske.

Vandeweghe sent down nine aces as she attempted to overcome 45 unenforced errors in a shaky start to her tournament.

However, she broke at the right moment in the third set to take the match, and set up a meeting with Tunisia's Ons Jabeur.

    Babos 7-6 (7-4) Sharapova

Timea Babos seals the set with a grimace and a gripped fist towards her camp in the players' box.

If she converts this set lead into victory it won't be her biggest win by ranking - that is world number 11 Dominika Cibulkova at the moment - but it certainly will be by name.

Maria Sharapova survives on her uppers over her next two service points, looking on in relief as Babos over-cooks down the line after running down a drop-shot.

Sharapova is 18-0 at night on this court and they've put her on the day today.

  5. Tie-breakpublished at 22:11 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

    *Babos 6-6 (4-2) Sharapova

Maria Sharapova tightens up horribly as a double fault gives Timea Babos 4-1 and a double mini-break.

But Babos is also yippy. She misses with her first serve and her second is punished. The Hungarian is a mini-break up at the sit-down.

    Errors, errors, errors.

Both players look twitchy as Sharapova sprays wide to give away a mini break and then Babos double-faults it straight back to her.

    Kuznetsova 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-2) Vondrousova

It's not been easy, but Svetlana Kuznetsova is through to the second round.

Her Czech opponent pushed her all the way, and at one point she had three match points, but Kuznetsova prevailed to force a tie-break, which she fired her way through.

Vondrousova was battling with cramp as the tie-break progressed and it was the 2004 victor who went on to win.

And, as tennis writer Hannah Wilks points out, she had the greatest response, external to a post-match question about her opponent's cramp: "'I felt sorry she was cramping but I thought, she's 18 and I'm 32, so ...'"

Babos doesn't want to be second fiddle to Sharapova. We know what all the ladies in the locker room think about her. She has got a price on her head, Maria, and she knows it.

Maria Sharapova's service action is on the wonk.

After an aborted second-serve ball-toss, she pats long to offer up a break point.

The nerves are getting to here.

A forehand long and once again Timea Babos will serve for the opening set.

Timea Babos leans in and pumps a backhand down the line and in for 15-30.

But Maria Sharapova is a grinder and grafter. Percentage tennis whittles out the next two points.

    Not so fast.

Timea Babos runs down a drop-shot and flips a forehand into the beckoning acres behind her.

    Deuce.

After that great match against Halep, it's interesting how this crowd has come together for Sharapova. You could hear them cheering for her there. She needs to win this in straight sets if she wants to win the tournament.

Thirty-thirty, a nerve-testing scoreline and Timea Babos falters as he prods a tentative forehand into the net from out wide and on the run.

    Break point to Sharapova.

Relentless pressure, repeated grunting and finally Babos breaks down and cuffs long.

    We are back on serve.

We were talking before about the emotional toll of Monday night's match on Sharapova but of course it was a long match too - two hours and 44 minutes. If this goes to three sets, will she have anything in her legs?

Timea Babos muscles a lovely double-handed backhand away for 15-0.

A strong confident stroke as we get to the pointy end of the first set.

The umpire overrules his line judge to call Maria Sharapova's forehand long and gets it right by a couple of milimetres.

That is why he gets the big chair I guess.

    Babos takes advantage and holds.

    BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows

"I'm not dedicated to the game at all. I keep letting people down."

Nick Kyrgios has come in for plenty of criticism in his time but has delivered a brutal self-assessment after losing to John Millman on four sets.

The disappointment of yet another injury problem, this time the shoulder, left the 22-year-old raw with emotion.

"There are players out there that are more dedicated, that want to get better, that strive to get better every day, the one-percenters. I'm not that guy."
