    Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 4-4 Del Potro*

A fine cross-court forehand winner from Laaksonen takes him to 30-0, before a darting Del Potro slices his backhand into the net.

Del Potro, on one leg, fizzes a forehand long, and we're all square once again.

This US Open has got a whole lot less expressive and temperamental today - following Nick Kyrgios out of the exit door is the always-fun-to-watch Fabio Fognini.

The 22nd seed has been downed by fellow Italian Stefano Travaglia, 6-4 7-6 (10-8) 3-6 6-0.

    *Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 3-4 Del Potro

A service winner gives Del Potro the advantage but again, Laaksonen has a chance to pull things back.

A tame forehand comes his way but he hits his forehand too hard, and it lands just beyond the tramlines. Del Potro holds.

  4. Del Potro saves two break pointspublished at 20:18 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

    *Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 3-3 Del Potro

There's a smirk from Del Potro as a flighted forehand sails long, but he's soon down to 15-40 as Laaksonen takes advantage of some loose shots.

A big serve saves the first break point, Laaksonen slapping his return wide, before Del Potro, on the run, offers up a tame backhand - and Laaksonen overworks his attempted winner!

There was acres of space for Laaksonen to deposit the ball into and instead it's landed well long of the baseline. Deuce.

  5. Bedene broken in second setpublished at 20:15 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

    Bedene 1-6 0-2 Rublev*

It went to deuce, but Aljaz Bedene has been unable to stop the rot on court eight.

He's been broken in the second game by Andrey Rublev and it's going to be an uphill battle for the Brit from here.

    Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 3-3 Del Potro*

Ooft. Laaksonen chases down the Del Potro forehand to move to 30-0, but a slip at the net allows the Argentine to slash a backhand winner beyond his opponent.

A double fault for Laaksonen on his serve, the Swiss struggling to find the line, draws things level but a nice dart to the net sees a volleyed winner go beyond Del Potro.

The Argentine then goes long with a forehand return, and the two draw level once again.

    *Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 2-3 Del Potro

The errors are coming a little more frequently from Laaksonen now, as Del Potro moves to 40-15 courtesy of a long forehand.

Bam. A flat ace goes down the T - the 12th that's come from Del Potro's racquet - and he consolidates his break with a hold.

  8. Rublev on a rollpublished at 20:07 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

It has not been a great start for Bedene, who is stuck away on Court Eight on the outer fringes of Flushing Meadows, with a only a few rows of seating on three sides and a large blue fence on the other. A dodgy drop shot allows Rublev to move in and thump away a winner to break for 5-1, pumping his fist in celebration, and moments later he's snaffled the set. The young Russian is one of the poster boys of the heralded #NextGen that men's tennis is pushing, and with good reason, judging by the first set.

Juan Martin del Potro is still an extraordinary athlete and when he connects with the forehand properly he hits it harder than anyone else in the game.

  11. Laaksonen saves three break pointspublished at 20:06 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

    Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 2-1 Del Potro*

Excellent work, man in the crowd! Del Potro spanks a forehand high and terribly wide, the ball flying up into the stands - and a passing punter sticks up a hand and catches it. Even more impressively, he doesn't spill a single but of his drink as he does so.

That takes us to 40-40 on the Laaksonen serve, but a long forehand from the Swiss gives the Argentine break point.

But there's too much fizz on the forehand from Delpo, and back to deuce we go.

  12. Game and first set - Rublevpublished at 20:02 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

    Bedene 1-6 Rublev

It's, er, not going too well on court eight.

It's taken just 21 minutes for Andrey Rublev to take the first set against British number three Aljaz Bedene. Rublev has won 25 points to Bedene's 11 and made hay on his serve, winning 100% of the points on his second serve

    *Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 2-1 Del Potro

Del Potro is finally on the board in this set. He's not the quickest around the court and he lumbers back to his seat after he cracks down an ace that Laaksonen sprawls for, and promptly misses.

  14. Del Potro brokenpublished at 19:57 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

    Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 2-0 Del Potro*

If further proof were needed that I am the ultimate tennis jinx, then the proof is in the pudding over on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Juan Martin del Potro has been broken by Laaksonen straight away in the third set. A Del Potro backhand finds the foot of the net, and Laaksonen holds to go 2-0 up. Bets on this one going the distance?

  15. Bedene broken by Rublevpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

    *Bedene 1-4 Rublev

It's taken 13 minutes for the first break point of the match to appear on court eight - and it's gone Andrey Rublev's way.

He's consolidated his break with a tidy hold.

    Laaksonen 4-6 6-7 (3-7) Del Potro*

It's all going rather well from Juan Martin del Potro, as he comes through the second set tie-break against Henri Laaksonen.

It's been a cagey match so far, neither player giving much away, but it's the 24th seed who is two sets to the good.

  17. Svitolina through to second roundpublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

Fourth seed Elina Svitolina overcame a scare to beat world number 42 Katerina Siniakova in the US Open first round.

The Ukrainian fought back from a disappointing second set to win 6-0 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 on Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Svitolina had been in control of the match before rain intervened on Tuesday, and she struggled for rhythm when play restarted on Wednesday.

"Today was a little bit of a mess in my head and it was very tough to keep the focus," she told Eurosport.

  18. Dimitrov through but Gasquet outpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

Cincinnati Open champion Grigor Dimitrov is through to the second round following a simple 6-1 6-4 6-2 win over Vaclav Safranek.

Dimitrov held his serve throughout the match as he powered to victory in one hour and 48 minutes.

However, 26th seed Richard Gasquet is out after a 3-6 6-2 6-4 6-2 defeat by Argentine lucky loser Leonardo Mayer.

Gasquet cut a frustrated figure as he struggled to chase down Mayer's shots but he won just 17 points to Mayer's 26 in the final set as Mayer registered victory.

  20. Head to headpublished at 19:43 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

    *Bedene 0-1 Rublev

Let's turn our attention to Aljaz Bedene, who has just begun his match against Andrey Rublev.

Bedene's 19-year-old opponent is five places below him in the world rankings, but he's had a positive year.

Rublev claimed his first ATP World Tour title in July as he made the most of his lucky loser status to triumph at the Croatia Open, beating Paolo Lorenzi - who was 16 years his senior - in the final.

The right-hander comes for a sporty family - his mother and sister are both tennis coaches, while dad Andrey is a former boxer.

Bedene triumped when the two met earlier this year at the Irving Tennis Classic. The Brit registered a 6-1 6-7 (6-8) 2-6 win in the semi-finals on his way to winning the competition in March.
