"I came on this course yesterday and I was arrogant enough to think I could get down it. There is no way I could."

"What a phenomenal effort from Zoe Gillings. They all fell over as they crossed the line. It was like they had been fired out of a cannon. We talked earlier about how the course was getting slushy. Zoe stayed towards the back out of the way and was so unlucky to lose out on a photo finish."

"This is the most ridiculous entertainment sport can offer. So simple: go down the hill, get there first. And carnage ensues."

Well I said the first semi-final was crazy, but that was beaten by the drama in the second semi-final.

Lindsey Jacobellis, who missed out on a gold medal in 2006 when she was showing off, was leading, but under no pressure crashes on a corner.

That left Zoe Gillings in contention for a top-three finish that would take her into the final.

Italian Michela Moioli, in third, is about to cross the line and falls, but Gillings does the same and narrowly misses out on a place in the final.

More crazy action in the first semi-final. Eva Samkova, of Czech Republic, who has drawn a comedy moustache on to her face, wins the heat. Chloe Trespeuch and Faye Gulini also make the final, but Austria's Susanne Moll and Switzerland's Simona Meiler are disqualified.

"This course is not for the faint-hearted," says GB snowboarder Ben Kilner after reigning Olympic champion Dominique Maltais of Canada crashes out.

"Great Britain's Zoe Gillings is through to the semi-final after finishing third in her quarter-final. It was tense, but she managed to stay clear of trouble and punches the air in celebration of her progression to the next round."

"Zoe might not be the best starter but she is not afraid to race toe-to-toe with the most experienced riders. It's such a lottery. We've lost so many big names already, including the current Olympic champion."

Great Britain's Zoe Gillings finishes third in the third quarter-final of the women's snowboard cross to qualify for the semi-final.

Gillings was challenging for third with Yuka Fujimoro from Japan when the Japanese woman fell and Gillings held on safely to secure her place in the semi-final, which takes place shortly.

"What a pile up. The experienced heads bottled it. Charlotte Bankes in the lead has set the pace for that jump and because she's over shot it, everyone has done the same. So much drama."

The snowboard cross has to be one of the most insane events at the Winter Olympics. Six snowboarders, all starting at the same time, race downhill through a number of turns and jumps.

It is carnage in the second heat as France's Charlotte Bankes, who was in the lead, lands badly from a jump and crashes out (pictured). Brazil's Isabel Clark Ribeiro also falls, as does Canada's Maelle Ricker, who fails to finish.

Fancy being a competitor in the snowboard cross? Only the brave need apply.

"Some quotes from men's super-G gold medallist Kjetil Jansrud: "I am floating and feeling great. I wasn't nervous at the start but things got a little exciting when Andrew [Weibrecht] was going down. It means the world to me. This is the biggest thing you can win. It's something I have worked for since I was a kid.

"Silver medallist Weibrecht said: "This is probably one of the most incredible moments of my life. It has been such a difficult four years with all the surgeries. To come back and be able to throw it down at the perfect time, I don't have the words for it."

"American Bode Miller was asked what it meant to be the second most decorated Olympic skier behind Kjetil Andre Aamodt?

"He replied: "It means I'm old. I grew up watching Aamodt and Lasse [Kjus] and Hermann [Maier]. To be in the group with those guys - it's not something I think about regularly, but when I do it's pretty overwhelming. When you look at your whole body of work it makes it more raw for you emotionally."
