I don’t think we’ve ever seen Simone at a major championships fall off the beam. She’s so secure on that series, normally.

It was a shame because she was so emphatic in those first few lengths.

And while it was a big surprise, it doesn't take anything away from her phenomenal Games performances so far. She has three golds, and a chance for another on the floor later.

An injury blow for Team GB - Zharnel Hughes has withdrawn from tonight's 200m heats (18:55 BST) because of hamstring tightness.

Hughes has endured an injury-interrupted summer and failed to qualify for the 100m final on Sunday night.

More falls in horizontal bar finalpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 5 August

There's no time to dwell on the beam final in the Bercy Arena because the men's horizontal bar final has started - and the falls really do seem to be contagious.

Tang Chia-Hung of Chinese Taipei is up first and falls in a routine jam-packed with difficulty, losing his grip after a big release.

    He scores 13.966.

Biles misses out on beam medalpublished at 12:49 British Summer Time 5 August

    Women's beam final

The gasps you could hear around the Bercy Arena when Simone Biles fell were quite something.

She stumbled upon landing one of her layouts and slipped off, which resulted in a fifth-placed finish.

Biles, with three golds already to her name in this Games, was animated in discussion with her coach and team-mate Sunisa Lee afterwards, suggesting she was unhappy with something that may have been putting her off.

She marched off with some purpose, so don't be surprised if you see a fired-up Biles coming out to the floor final in an hour's time.

Surprised nobody is mentioning the fact all the falls have been from the right side of the beam. Somebody please get the chalk onto it!

Wonderful scenes in the Bercy Arena as Alice D'Amato has the biggest grin on her face receiving her gold medal. She wasn't among the favourites but she kept her composure and in such high stakes, that's all she needed to do.

D'Amato burst into tears when her gold was confirmed and she fights back the tears again as the Italian anthem is played.

Sunisa Lee's fall shows just how difficult these gymnasts' routines are - look at the complexity of the moves she is trying to put together.

There is so little margin for error on the beam and it really showed in that final.

    Women's beam final

    Beth Tweddle

We usually say about beam that who stays on wins a medal, and unfortunately that’s the way it’s gone. There was a lot of errors in that final. The two Italians went out and did their routines cleanly, and that’s the result.

The pressure of an Olympic final is so much and you only have to be slightly off line and that’s game over. You cannot pull it back. They were going for some difficult elements out there.

Dramatic women's beam finalpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 5 August

    My word, that was eventful!

There were a lot of falls, including one from Simone Biles, who ends up in fifth place with her team-mate Sunisa Lee, who made the same score.

China's Zhou Yaqin takes the silver medal and it's pure delight for the Italian camp as they take gold and bronze, with Manila Esposito completing the podium.

Biles, by the way, looked very annoyed at something. She's marched off, with just over an hour to get ready for the floor final where she will be absolutely desperate to put things right.

She's given 13.100, and she will not medal on the beam. But, she's still got floor to come and she's had the most incredible Games so far.

Alice D'Amato keeps the lead with one gymnast to go and it's Brazil's Rebeca Andrade, silver medallist in the all-around. Is this her moment?
