Medal winning gymnast in three Olympic Games on BBC Radio 5 Live

    Simone Biles is off!

Biles, the somewhat invincible gymnast we have seen, has fallen off the beam.

Apart from the fall it was fairly spotless, we have seen a chink in the armour of Biles.

    A shocker!

Gasps echo all around the Bercy Arena as Simone Biles stumbles and falls after a double layout.

It was a positive and composed start, her spins and leaps went well and she landed the dismount.

Biles is unhappy about something, she is animated in discussion with her coach after striding off.

At last someone’s come through a beam routine. And Alice D’Amato did it with such style. Very positive from the start.

One thing she is very good at, if you look at her feet, how she’s got really good extension. Again the judges will be really impressed with that.

    That's more like it!

Composure, skill and discipline from Italy's Alice D'Amato, the first gymnast to nail her routine. She stays remarkably calm to land every leap, tumble and the dismount amongst the chaos of everybody else's falls.

Huge celebrations from the Italian camp - she scores 14.366 to take the lead and with two gymnasts to go, she is guaranteed a medal!

What a moment. China's Zhou Yaqin goes down to second - and here is Simone Biles.

A reminder, Biles did not qualify top for this final. It's an apparatus she's won two bronzes on so not one she is necessarily as dominant in as, say, the floor where she will compete in the final later today. It's also an apparatus that is just 10cm wide so is notoriously tricky to navigate.

Falls aplenty in beam finalpublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 5 August

At this point, all Simone Biles will need to do is just stay on!

All but two gymnasts have fallen, and even those two have had some nervy wobbles.

Romania's 17-year-old gymnast Sabrina Moneca-Voinea has two falls after going for some difficult tumbles. A big learning curve for her, scoring 11.733.

A few of the headlines from this morning in Paris:

    • Team GB win bronze in the triathlon mixed team relay as Beth Potter finishes narrowly behind the USA's Taylor Knibb and Laura Lindemann, who secured gold for Germany.
    • Britain's Molly Caudery suffers a shock exit from qualification for the women's pole vault final.
    • Team GB's Alastair Chalmers finishes third in his 400m hurdles heat to qualify for the semi-finals, while compatriot Jessie Knight comes second in the women's event to make it through her heat.

Here's what's coming up in the next few hours:

    • The gymnastics is under way where there are four golds up for grabs with American superstar Simone Biles currently in action in the women's balance beam final and floor final later at 13:23 BST.
    • Britons Ben Maher, Scott Brash and Harry Charles – fresh from winning a glorious team gold on Friday – start their quests for individual equestrian medals in the jumping qualifiers at 13:00 BST.
    • At 14:30 BST the canoe slalom kayak cross quarter-finals start with Briton’s Kimberley Woods and Mallory Franklin in action in the women’s event and Joe Clarke competing in the men’s.

Zhou keeps lead, Esposito secondpublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 5 August

    Beam final

It's a nervy final! Nobody has got through a routine unscathed yet.

There's disappointment for Brazil's Julia Soares, who also falls off the beam after a leap and scores 12.333 while Italy's 17-year-old gymnast Manila Esposito does manage to recover her routine after a big wobble.

Halfway through, and Esposito's 14.000 puts her into second place with Zhou Yaqin keeping the lead with 14.100.

Simone Biles will be the penultimate gymnast to perform out of eight, with Brazil's Rebeca Andrade going last.

Ouch, a timely reminder of what I was just saying about the tricky beam - American Sunisa Lee just split the beam - what gymnasts call it when they fall with one leg on either side of the beam - on her way off the apparatus. She gets back on but that will have hurt and her score of 13.100 is not likely to challenge for a medal.

That said, the next competitor, Julia Soares, has also just fallen off. It's a hard apparatus to watch as well as compete on.

'Beam comes down to difficulty versus execution'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 5 August

    Women's beam final

    Beth Tweddle
London 2012 bronze medallist on BBC TV

I had to go down to the gym, I had to go see Simone Biles live. No one can appreciate how high she goes, how fast she is, the skills she’s actually executing until you see it in person.

I’ve not seen her live in a while and I felt I had to get down to the arena and watch her composure. She is just a human being and the nerves that she has are just like any other gymnast. She’s trained herself to control most nerves. She has worked very closely with her coaches to make sure that the skills she is using are right for what she needs.

We do know she can do more difficulty. She is constantly performing lower than the level that she can actually do.

We do say about beam, who stays on gets the medals, and it comes down to the difficulty versus the execution.

'Very surprised at that for Lee'published at 11:55 British Summer Time 5 August

    Women's beam final

    Christine Still
    Gymnastics expert on BBC TV

Sunisa Lee really did go for broke and it just didn’t quite work out. I am very surprised at that because she’s a very composed gymnast.

It was a strange one, because she did have both feet on. You only need to be a centimetre off line and you can't really recover from it.

Nasty fall for USA's Leepublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 5 August

    Women's beam final

    Oh no!

Sunisa Lee goes all out for difficulty but pays the price with a really nasty fall. She keeps a smile on her face and there's hugs waiting for her from the coaching staff and Biles, but she'll lose a whole point for that.

Very uncharacteristic for such a quality gymnast. She's actually lucky to avoid serious injury there, her foot slipping sideways after a double layout and straddling the beam as she falls.

Lee is given a score of 13.100, so China's Zhou keeps the lead.

Zhou wobbles in first routinepublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 5 August

    Women's beam final

Huge shame for Zhou Yaqin of China, who has a big wobble after one of her leap sequences which results in her putting her hands on the beam for a big deduction.

She lands the hard tumbles and the dismount so she gets credit for the difficulty, ending up with 14.100. It's still a good score which could challenge for a medal, but significantly down on the 14.866 that she earned in qualifying.

This is going to be an amazing final.

China's Zhou Yaqin qualified in first place with the highest difficulty, USA's Sunisa Lee was all-around champion at Tokyo and claimed bronze on the uneven bars yesterday, Rebeca Andrade of Brazil has gone toe-to-toe with Biles throughout the Games and then, of course, there is Biles herself.
