There are few things that reaffirm my belief that I could never have been a professional athlete more than watching divers fling themselves off boards of various heights and wobbliness.

The men's 3m springboard semi-final will get under way shortly, with Britain's synchro bronze medallist Jack Laugher and compatriot Jordan Houlden in action.

It's very simple - 18 divers perform six different dives, with the top 12 advancing to tomorrow's final.

Houlden is the 15th diver to go, followed by Laugher, when the competition gets under way shortly.

    Women's football semi-final - USA 1-0 Germany

The United States edged out Germany after extra time to reach the final of the women's Olympic football tournament for the first time since 2012.

Sophia Smith's strike was decisive for the US as the 23-year-old forward raced on to Mallory Swanson's pass in the 95th minute to slide the ball past advancing Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

Until then Emma Hayes' side had struggled to break down a resolute Germany side, who they thrashed 4-1 in the group stage.

Germany, who won the competition at Rio 2016, nearly took the contest to penalties but Laura Freigang's header was superbly saved by US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher in the 119th minute.

The morning after winning a silver medal in the men's 1500m final GB's Josh Kerr spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about adding to Great Britain's medal tally.

"The atmosphere was pretty electric in the Stade de France. I knew with the sheer amount of noise it would push the pace faster and it was about weathering that storm early and staying as relaxed as you can.

"The screens were not showing our race that much and I could feel there was couple of guys with us - I knew I was going to need another gear down the home stretch.

"It is difficult to have regrets in a fast race like that."

Kerr at the Tokyo Games won a bronze medal in the 1500m with last night's winner Cole Hocker finishing sixth in Tokyo.

"Hocker ran an phenomenal race. He was able to stay calm and went under the radar. It is hard to do with the big stage, but all you can do is tip your hat to someone like that – it is an awesome moment for him," Kerr said.

Paris 2024 organisers and World Aquatics have confirmed that Wednesday's familiarisation session for the marathon swimming in the River Seine will go ahead amid further concerns over water quality.

The session was originally scheduled for Tuesday, 6 August but was cancelled because of unacceptable levels of E. coli.

The water quality has had a significant impact on the Games so far with the men's triathlon delayed by a day, and Tuesday's familiarisation session was the fifth to be cancelled.

The mixed team triathlon took place on Monday which included a swim in the Seine, and the women's marathon swimming is scheduled for tomorrow at 6:30 BST and the men's at the same time on Friday.

Zheng scored a best of 63.19 to finish 18th in the preliminary round - missing out on a final that was won by Australia's Arisa Trew, 14.

Having only taken up skateboarding at the age of seven, she leaves France as one of the youngest Olympians of all time.

Athletics journalist Ben Bloom speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about the men's 1500m final last night as Great Britain's Josh Kerr won silver.

On Ingebrigtsen: "He ran an awful tactical race. He was so scared of Josh Kerr that he attempted to run the legs out of everyone from the outset. He went off far too quickly and he couldn’t sustain it."

On Kerr: "He did as well as he could have done. He broke the British record. He ran faster than he’d ever done before. He did execute his plan as best as he could. He just didn’t legislate for Cole Hocker running a three second personal best and nipping up the inside and doing what he did. He did run it perfectly. He destroyed Ingebrigtsen. Cole Hocker was just better on the night.

"He’s so locked in. So single-minded. I know all sports people dedicate their life to their cause but Josh Kerr takes it to an enormous degree."
