Gloucestershire in Pictures: JD Vance and VJ Day

  • Published

VJ Day commemorations, a visit from a vice president and a lightning strike are just some of the topics covered in this week's Gloucestershire in Pictures.

The vice president of the United States JD Vance was labelled "a bit of a mouth" by locals after holidaying with his family in an English country manor this week. He also made a visit to RAF Fairford.

Meanwhile, it has been a week of mixed weather, with heatwaves and downpours seen in the county.

Here are some of the most memorable moments.

A man in military uniform is holding a young child in a pink, gingham dress in his arms. He is talking to JD Vance, who is wearing a white shirt with no tie and a blue jacket. A woman appears to be watching on, with the back of her head and her long, brown hair visible. Security personnel can be seen in the background.Image source, PA Media

A sweeping coastline stretches out in a semi circle, with the sea so far out it is hardly visible. Large rocks go as far as the eye can see in the right of the photo, with the rocks then meeting the golden sand. The sand appears to be damp with the sunlight shimmering off of it and there is a small pool of water in the right of the image. The sky is blue with a few small clouds.Image source, Nutkin

Let's party: The Cotswold Friends, a charity that looks out for the elderly and vulnerable people in the Cotswolds, held its Volunteer Summer Party in the Orangery and Gardens at Sezincote House & Garden this week.

A black and white image, possibly taken from a doorbell camera, captures a large lightning bolt in the shape of a backwards C striking. It is a very dark image but a large hedge and a few cars can just about be made out in the foreground, with the rooftops visible in the background.Image source, Ashley Naylor

A shock in Coopers Edge: A lightning bolt caused damage to a house when it hit in Coopers Edge at 02:30 BST on Tuesday.

The couple whose house was hit said the lightning strike "sounded like a bomb going off".

Results day: Students across the West had a day of nervous excitement as they collected their A-level results, including at Cheltenham Bournside School.

There were feelings of relief, joy and in some cases disappointment as students gathered in school halls across the region to find out if they had achieved the grades they had set out to.
