Jersey Bulls registered an important win their quest for the Combined Counties Premier Division South title as they beat fellow high-fliers Abbey Rangers 2-0 at Springfield.

Lorne Bickley had an early effort blocked, while the striker and teammate Miguel Carvalho both had penalty claims waved away by the referee.

Fraser Barlow's superb 75th-minute shot into the top corner broke the deadlock.

And Luke Watson made the game safe when he scored deep in stoppage time.

Barlow raced down the byline before pulling it back to the onrushing Watson and the experienced midfielder's deflected shot found the net.

The win moves Bulls up to second place in the table, only a point behind leaders Farnham Town, who have won all 13 of their matches, and five clear of fourth-placed Abbey.

"I felt we were the only team looking to create a chance," Bulls manager Gary Freeman told BBC Radio Jersey.

"To be fair it's taken a bit of magic from Fraser to score that goal, but I thought we deserved it.

"I thought we were the only team looking for it and I think we've managed it well.

"We were talking on the sideline about possibly taking off one of the midfielders and having a bit of a gamble and going two up top.

"But we've done that in the past and the game opens up and we've been caught, so I'm delighted that we kept doing what we were doing and got the rewards."
