@ChrisGill95 on “X”: Hey Phil. Did you get wet at “The Theatre Of Streams” yesterday? Apparently OT houses the fourth biggest waterfall in the UK. Shows how far United have fallen on and off the pitch.

Thanks for your concern, Chris. Yes, I did thanks but not inside the stadium only on the walk to the car afterwards.

It was a genuinely extraordinary storm, with a month’s worth of rain falling in two hours, so this was a very unusual set of circumstances.

What it did confirm, however, was the sorry state of some areas of Old Trafford and how it has been allowed to fall into a very poor state of disrepair, with footage of water pouring though a leak in a roof inside the stadium.

It would have been a real embarrassment to new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has already made his displeasure at facilities clear, and will only strengthen his resolve to do something about it with a new stadium a matter on his agenda.

Much of the supporter discussion around England ahead of Euro 2024 is how to find space in a starting XI for a generation of excellent forwards.

Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Ollie Watkins are all having great individual seasons at their clubs and the debate around Foden in a central position has gathered momentum in recent weeks.

"Well, we can't start them all," said Gareth Southgate.

"They're nice problems to have. You’d rather have talent and have to make decisions based on form, than not have those options and be scratching your heads on who to play in which position.

"I think any manager would say the same thing. You'd rather have good players to work with and to pick from."

  4. Phil McNulty Q&A - no quick fix for Man Utdpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 13 May

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply)

Mike - a long time United supporter: We are tired of being told about "the project" but realistically I think the problems are so deep we need five years.

I don't see Erik ten Haag as the right person, but unless there is a good long-term manager already lined up, I feel let him see out his final year, and the new structures can plan accordingly without too much transfer input from his side. We are also limited by spending regulations, so must be patient (still/again) Thoughts?

I struggle to see Ten Hag in the long-term but no elite potential successors jump out at you and Sir Jim Ratcliffe may still feel he deserves a chance withing the new structure – although that must still be in doubt.

I totally agree that this is a very long-term project. Everything about the club has been allowed to slide (although as should except the women’s team after they won the FA Cup) from squad, recruitment, structure and a once top-class stadium that has been allowed to fall into very bad disrepair, as proved again by the leaks during yesterday’s storm.

It is a mammoth job in every way and there is no quick fix.

Lyle Stevik: As daft as this might sound, if Villa beat Liverpool tonight, Spurs will have literally nothing to play for against Man City. I think that could have a huge bearing on whether Arsenal win the title or not.

  6. Phil McNulty Q&A - Spurs to drop out of European places?published at 14:41 British Summer Time 13 May

Paul from Brighton: Question to Phil: If Spurs drop points against Man City, do you think they could slip out of the Europa League places? Both Chelsea and Newcastle would only be three points behind them, with a better goal difference. And Man United could still win the FA Cup.

That could all happen, Paul, but I just don’t see it. Spurs still need to be looking up rather than down and my money would be on them reaching the Europa League and Aston Villa getting that top four spot – although they might be a little nervous if they slip up against Liverpool tonight. Good goal difference helps Villa as well.

And I must admit I’m struggling to see past Manchester City for the FA Cup.

  8. Contract not a distraction before Euro 2024 - Southgatepublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 13 May

England manager Gareth Southgate says his contract situation is "not an issue and never has been" as he enters the final six months of his deal before the European Championship in Germany.

The Football Association is keen for Southgate to remain as manager. He will be overseeing a fourth major tournament as manager this summer, as the men’s team look to win their first trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

And the 53-year-old, who will have managed the same number of England games as Sir Bobby Robson when the tournament kicks off, says the talk about his future will not be a distraction.

"Well, for me, it's not an issue and never has been," Southgate said.

"I have to deliver a successful tournament for England and there's enough work involved in that. I think everybody would expect that's where my focus should be."

This talk on social media from Spurs fans wanting to throw the game against City is absurd! They won’t throw the game, if they lose it’s because they’re rubbish and City are miles better! I do think it will end in a draw though.

  10. Phil McNulty Q&A - who should Newcastle sell?published at 14:24 British Summer Time 13 May

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply)

Graham, Consett: Who should Eddie Howe sell to get funds for Newcastle in the summer? I think Trippier, Wilson, Longstaff and Almiron should go. Thanks.

Tough decisions ahead in this regard, Graham, but they must build a wall around Anthony Gordon and Aleksandar Isak. Same with Bruno Guimaraes unless they get that £100m offer towards the end of June that would activate a release clause.

As for who to sell, I think Callum Wilson is an obvious contender given his age and injury record, while Miguel Almiron could be considered if a decent offer comes in.

Newcastle do have to bring money in so that might make Sean Longstaff vulnerable, especially with Sandro Tonali coming back from his suspension.

I’d hesitate to sell Trippier purely because of his versatility and leadership qualities – but money does talk.

Spare a thought for us Gooners having to support Spurs tomorrow night. We don’t do that lightly! To answer the question though, if we were playing Man City knowing that winning would hand Spurs the title I would still be right behind my team. There were two other chances for Spurs to influence the title against Arsenal and they only partially took one of them.

  12. Phil McNulty Q&A - different options for Everton takeover?published at 14:16 British Summer Time 13 May

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply)

@Andy_wxm on “X”:Morning Phil. Do you know of any other potential parties willing to take over Everton? It seems that 777 are not fit for purpose with the time they've taken to buy Everton.

Lots of whispers about other interested parties waiting in the wings, Andy, but nothing concrete as yet.

What I think looks pretty certain is that the 777 takeover bid appears to be grinding to a halt as so many issues have been raised around their businesses and the Premier League are certainly in no rush to approve them – which actually tells you everything.

The sad part of all this is that the hope that came with Farhad Moshiri in 2016 has dissolved because of the catastrophic running of the club by the owner and those custodians of the club who were in place over the last several years.

Everton and their fans (who have been incredible throughout all of this) will be hoping a solution to this can be found very soon and a great club that has been in crisis for far too long can make a fresh start.

  14. Phil McNulty Q&A - criteria change for Golden Gloves?published at 14:12 British Summer Time 13 May

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply)

Michael, Lincolnshire: Hi Phil, what do you think of the award of the Golden Gloves on clean sheets alone. As a former keeper I still think it's not right. There's more to a blank than just the keeper eg no shots on target, excellent defending etc. With the advent of so many stats (most of which i hate), it should be possible to work it out on shots saved etc. I think the Luton goalkeeper may have won it.

Afternoon, Michael. It’s certainly a very simple way of deciding it and I suppose if you play in front of the best defences you won’t have to make so many saves to win it and have more clean sheets!

I think some sort of ratio including shots saved etc. – and as you say all sorts of stats are available out there – then there may be another way of working it out.

Must say, though, it has has been this way for a long while and don’t see it changing.

We're not ready for Champions League, but could go far in the Europa, so losing to City is probably the best bet anyway. The thought of Arsenal winning the league is horrific.

  16. Moyes - Difficult to stop Man City's Under-14spublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 13 May

    West Ham 3-1 Luton

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

David Moyes' final game as West Ham manager will be at Manchester City on Sunday.

Having enjoyed the perfect end to his home tenure at the London Stadium with the comeback victory against virtually relegated Luton, I put it to Moyes that his last task could well be to try and stop City winning the Premier League title.

"It would be difficult to stop their Under-14s winning the title," he joked.

"Professional is the word I would use.

"We will try and do the best we can."

City do have form for making life difficult for themselves on the final day - but they have always got the job done before.

Run your own race! I can't imagine wanting to see Spurs throw the game as a fan. I would definitely have questions about the players mentally if they are willing to throw a game, especially when there is still a potential top 4 on the line (however unlikely).

  18. Phil McNulty Q&A - scheduling issues affecting playing welfare?published at 14:00 British Summer Time 13 May

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply)

Alan: Phil, I too was astonished about Charnock Richard but at the elite level, the scheduling affects all international level players - what odds for England going out this summer due to tired players - as well as clubs playing in Europe? The PL takes little account of European games with scheduling and tv broadcasting whereas in Europe they do. Do you agree our PL is not about the welfare of players?

It doesn’t seem to be, Alan. The problem is the schedule is filling up rather than thinning out. It certainly takes its toll when measured in injuries and there is no doubt it has led to players arriving at major tournaments jaded or carrying injuries – or being ruled out altogether because of injuries sustained playing for their clubs.

The problem is that the financial rewards for these tournaments are so great, as they are from broadcasting deals, that I do not see this changing any time soon.

That's all from Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

It was interesting to hear his reaction to the suggestion that a "proportion" of Spurs fans are hoping their side lose against Manchester City tomorrow night.

Manchester City will go back to the top of the Premier League table at the expense of Tottenham's north London rivals Arsenal if they pick up all three points.

City will be two points clear going into the final round of fixtures on Sunday when they host West Ham and Arsenal welcome Everton to the Emirates.

Let's throw this out for a wider chat.

Imagine your team are in Tottenham's shoes, would you be happy to take a loss if it was going to play a big role in denying your biggest rival the chance to win the title?

Let us know the team you support and what your stance is using the details above.
