  1. Phil McNulty Q&A - players facing 'ridiculously heavy' workloadpublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 13 May

Matt, Birmingham: Question for Phil: With the Euros this summer, Club World Cup in 2025, and World Cup in 2026, the next “free” summer break for players after a long domestic (and in some cases European) season is 2027. Surely there should be more concern from the authorities about player welfare?

Hi Matt. I agree that is a ridiculously heavy programme and will be a real strain on players operating at that elite level.

I’m not sure what can be done about it other than managers taking great care over their players’ workload – which will then lead to understandable complaints about not being able to field their best teams and also the real potential for injuries.

It is a very tough situation but I’m actually not sure what the answer is – although that answer is not cutting FA Cup replays.

  3. Phil McNulty Q&A - Everton's 777 situationpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 13 May

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply)

@win_n10 on “X”: Given furore has surrounded 777 since Moshiri first announced them as preferred bidder for Everton is it surprising that he is yet to end this takeover and does this slow death suggest the Premier League Ownership And Directors Test is still not fit for purpose as even 777 cannot be disqualified?

In some ways it isn’t a surprise because Moshiri’s management of Everton has been so poor since he acquired control.

With all the various issues surrounding 777 it is a surprise this has dragged on so long and surely this has to end soon. The giveaway is that the Premier League has clearly had major reservations for some time otherwise they would have signed this deal off. Only they can know why they have not stepped in already but it now looks like it will come to an end of its own accord.

This is, of course, unless the unpredictable Moshiri decides otherwise.

The Premier League would also say they have been careful to guard Everton’s interests in this particular case by not signing it off.

There has been much news around 777 recently – and none of it good.

  4. 'Bold selection from Skinner'published at 09:58 British Summer Time 13 May

    Man Utd 4-0 Tottenham

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport at Wembley

Emma Sanders speaking on the Football Daily podcast: "In the first half, Man Utd's set pieces caused a lot of problems for Tottenham..

"I think we saw a bold selection from Marc Skinner to put Rachel Williams in that starting lineup, it raised a lot of eyebrows, and people were wondering why Nikita Parris, the top goal scorer wasn’t in the team. But we saw the impact that Williams had in the first half with those set pieces."

Manchester United fan Kim Burdett had a mixed Sunday as the women's team won the FA Cup but the men's side fell to a pretty miserable 1-0 defeat in the Premier League.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast about the 4-0 thrashing of Tottenham to lift the Women's FA Cup for the first time, Burdett said: “Isn’t it nice to see them lift the trophy? The men’s team – it’s probably not happening this season

“She’s an absolute club legend, Ella Toone. What a fantastic finish. Fantastic goals all through the team, really good performance.

"Considering the team’s only existed for six years, lovely to have a trophy to celebrate. They’re a great bunch of players and hopefully they can push on and do well again next season."

  6. Toone scored a 'pearler' of a goalpublished at 09:48 British Summer Time 13 May

Ella Toone speaking to the BBC on the Football Daily Podcast: "I have been practicing after training, shooting outside the box from all angles. When that one left my foot today, I knew it was going in.

"I had a dream as a young girl, that one day I would play for Manchester United. When there was no women's team to look up to, it was a difficult dream.

"As soon as they started a women’s team, I knew that I needed to come back home and fight for the club I love, so today means a lot to me."

  7. Phil McNulty Q&A - Kompany escaping criticism?published at 09:45 British Summer Time 13 May

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply)

Chris W: Morning Phil. It seems to me that Vincent Kompany has largely escaped criticism for a very poor season at Burnley and a stubborn refusal to alter his approach. Would you agree with that?

Hello Chris. I wouldn’t say he has escaped criticism because I’ve said myself that he has been guilty of a failure to adapt to the Premier League, sticking to principles that were fine in the Championship but looked like trouble in the Premier League, especially over-playing. Principles should also have an element of pragmatism.

He kept faith with his style and also an inexperienced squad and it is clear he took too long to change goalkeeper James Trafford for Arijanet Muric. And let’s not forget Burnley also spent a lot.

It does seem that Burnley will keep faith with Kompany, the central figure at the club, in the hope he will bring them back up again next year but he will come under increasing scrutiny after a poor season in which his methods (principles if you like) were found wanting. His stock has certainly fallen.

Credit to Arsenal. Worst I’ve seen us play all season yet stayed disciplined and nabbed a 1-0 at a ground where we notoriously pick up very little. Regardless of what happens over the next week, it's clear to see Arsenal are back and here to stay.

  12. Casemiro's strengths are 'wasted' at centre backpublished at 09:17 British Summer Time 13 May

    Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

On Casemiro jogging in the first 10 to 15 seconds: "We have seen him be a really good defensive midfielder across many years. But he couldn't sense the danger there [on the pitch] straight away, from the moment the ball was kicked, other players around him had the sense of urgency, to be able to squeeze the game and close off the field a bit but he doesn’t manage to do that.

"That's not autopilot, I don't think it is engaged at all, in that first 10 to 15 seconds, when other players were sprinting to the ball he was jogging, it's bizarre because he is one of the most decorated midfielders we have seen play in Europe over the last 10 years.

"When he plays at centre back it feels like a waste for him as I can't see his strengths in there."

ETH has to take the blame for some of this season, the lack of adaptability, tactical acumen, and a lot of the failed recruitment. But a lot of what has gone on during the matches is down to the players, yesterday and constant mistakes. Which are compounding the problem. There is an argument to be made that being out of Europe will help weed out these players and long term might be a good thing for united to build an actual side that wants to play for the club.

As a player manager and as a tactician Ten Hag is out of his depth at Man Utd. Some managers can replicate success wherever they go and others have a love affair with one club: it might be that for ETH that club is Ajax. Man Utd should choose wisely in the summer and appoint a manager who the club will back even if there is not (inevitably) a miracle turnaround. McKenna is the obvious choice. He could be there 10 years and end the cycle of 'quick fix, quick sack'.
