"That's an important point. But if you think they have then it does become an issue because all of us are just putting down the red carpet for them.

"I'm not going to do that - and I don't think any managers will. It's in the hand of each individual club to try and break that dominance and create teams that will challenge."

"There is a game of football tomorrow night. What do you think is going to happen? What do you think we're going to do as a team?

"Like any team on the planet, aren't we just going to try and win? It's a simple, basic premise.

"How that makes people feel, I'm not really fussed. I'd hate to think anyone thinks we'll go out there and do anything other than try to win a game that is consequential.

"How are we ever going to become a team that wins things if we don't win the big games, if we shy away from them?"

"But I think I've been consistent and really strong in my beliefs that it's important for this football club not to look for silver bullets to get to where we want to, it's hard work, it's resilience, it's quality, not to fall for any false dawns - and know what real success looks like: trophies.

Anon: Morning Phil, as a Liverpool fan watching our season fizzle out. Do you think I’m justified in feel a little underwhelmed by the appointment of Arne Slot?

Let’s be honest, anyone following Jurgen Klopp might have provoked that reaction apart from perhaps Xabi Alonso, who decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.

There is absolutely no reason to be underwhelmed by the appointment apart of Arne Slot other than the fact he is not Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool will have done full due diligence on a coach with personality who has done fine work at Feyenoord and who was a serious candidate for Spurs not so long ago.

I think you just have to trust the club to get it right.

  13. 'Pray for a miracle tomorrow night'published at 13:04 British Summer Time 13 May

    Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Casemiro was largely at fault for the goal Manchester United conceded in yesterday's 1-0 defeat against Arsenal.

The Brazilian is a holding midfielder by trade but had to play in the heart of defence due to United's injury issues and he was guilty of stepping up too slowly, allowing Arsenal to hit on the counter.

Arsenal fan Laura Kirk was asked about the former Real Madrid midfielder and the Gunners' hopes of landing the title on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast.

Kirk said: “It’s sort of sad to see a once very good footballer falling to these standards but it’s subjectively quite funny. I think really poor from Manchester United’s side. Any better quality and we would have been in trouble but pretty shocking from their formerly great standards.

“By yesterday’s standards, it going to be difficult. But certainly all we have to do is our job and pray for a miracle tomorrow night. I have a little bit of hope – I don’t know if it’s hope or delusion – that there could be something special that happens on Sunday.

“The form that City are in at the moment they’re so good at playing heir best at the most important part of the season so we’ve got to hope for a miracle basically.”

  14. Phil McNulty Q&A - top four for Chelsea next season?published at 13:00 British Summer Time 13 May

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply)

Kevin James Blakey: Good morning Phil. I'm a Chelsea fan of 50 years so I've seen them at their very best and at their very worst.

If we get a world class striker in during the summer and a centre back, plus keep Reece James and Chilwell fit, where do you think we could finish next season? As for the title I have a feeling Tottenham will get a draw or win meaning the title goes to the wire, so do you think Arsenal can hold their nerve and beat Everton?

Hello, Kevin. I think there is definitely the basis of a very good side at Chelsea but they must stick with Mauricio Pochettino to allow him to build on it.

Reece James is like a world-class addition and if they can find someone to put the ball in the net – and why haven’t they already given the money spent? – then I can seem them challenging for the top four next season.

And on your second question, if Arsenal have to beat Everton to win the Premier League I am as certain as I can be that they will.
