Erik ten Hag's future at Old Trafford remains uncertain. He has a year left on his contract but there has been growing speculation new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who was in attendance on Sunday, might be tempted to make a change.

The former Ajax boss understandably points to the volume of injuries his side has had to contend with this season.

"Every manager can always do better," he said after Sunday's game. "I have been here two years and only one time had a full group of players.

"It is like swimming with your hands on your back and you have to keep your head above the water level."

Despite the issues United have had this season, they do have the FA Cup final to look forward to.

But their opponents in that game are Manchester City and Ten Hag knows his side will need to show significantly more fight if they are to finish a disappointing season on a high.

Being spoilers of another team's party is not a position Manchester United want to be in, but that is the position they were taking up today as long-time rivals Arsenal came into town.

After being beaten 4-0 by Crystal Palace last-time out, many fans understandably feared the worst against a Gunners side who arrived at Old Trafford determined to take the title battle with Manchester City to the final day of the season.

However, a big win for Arsenal failed to materialise and Erik ten Hag will be disappointed that the decisive goal came from sloppy defending, with Casemiro playing Kai Havertz onside, allowing him to provide the cross for Leandro Trossard to turn in.

To Manchester United's credit, they did show flashes but ultimately did not trouble David Raya in the Arsenal goal enough.

Manchester United have the FA Cup to focus on before the season is out and then the work will begin as they look to find a way to get closer to Arsenal and Manchester City in future seasons.

As a Man Utd fan I have this season switched between the sack ETH and keep ETH debate. Today I sit here and I say keep ETH. Yes, he has made many mistakes, some his own doing and some because he's probably had very little support. European football is looking less likely next season so there will be little or no money to spend on big ticket players. Get rid of the dead wood and those ones on meal ticket salaries and bring through the academy players and start a fresh. Wayne Rooney made a very valid point last night, a lot of the current squad are hiding behind little injuries rather than gritting their teeth and putting a shift in.

Arsenal were definitely nervous and edgy, but once they took the lead, I think they realised to keep it tight and get the points they needed.

United had lots of selection problems and a make shift team. They looked very young and too inexperienced in key areas and then too old in other areas.

Even though United had a good few attacks, you never thought that they were going to score. One thing that struck me was the amount of time United had the ball in the last few minutes near the goal, they just shot like desperation.

Arsenal held up their side of the bargain yesterday to ensure the race for the Premier League title goes down to the final day, however, second-placed Manchester City are still in the driving seat.

City's game in hand means victories in their final two games will seal a fourth successive title.

The Gunners are hoping for a favour from north London rivals Tottenham, who host Man City on Tuesday, to boost their chances of a first league title since 2003-04.

The Telegraph's top story is built on remarks from former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney after yesterday's 1-0 loss against Arsenal.

Rooney claims some of United's injured players are ducking games.

Tottenham boss Robert Vilahamn said "this is not the end, this is the beginning" after his side were well-beaten by Manchester United in the Women's FA Cup final.

Spurs ultimately fell short as United comfortably won 4-0 at Wembley to claim their first major trophy.

Marc Skinner's side were dominant and scored four goals from their eight shots on target, while Spurs failed to have a single effort on goal.

But Vilahamn believes his players are closing the gap between themselves and the top teams, and have to take the positives from the result.

"The main thing I said was this is not the end, it is the beginning," Vilahamn said.

"We still have a gap between us and the top teams but that’s normal. We are closing the gap but we haven’t closed the gap yet."

  12. Skinner defiant after FA Cup winpublished at 07:42 British Summer Time 13 May

Pressure on Marc Skinner to deliver for Manchester United has grown throughout the season but when he walked into his news conference, holding the FA Cup trophy and buoyed by their success, he brought a sense of defiance with him too.

Question marks over his future - with his contract set to run out in the summer - were high on the agenda, but beating Tottenham to win the club's first major women's trophy was a big tick in the box.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chairman of Ineos - who have a minority shareholding in United - may not have been present at Wembley but Skinner knows this was a significant statement to make as the club enters a new era of ownership.

There have been banners calling for Skinner's sacking by some fans as United, runners-up in the Women's Super League last season, have dropped to fifth this year, suffering defeats in all four league matches against rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

It would be understandable, then, if Skinner felt relief at full-time.

Under pressure, he had delivered silverware - an expectation all fans had at the start of the season and something Ratcliffe is already demanding.

But Skinner responded: “Never relief, never. We don’t live in that moment. I’m happy with the job I’m doing at Manchester United."

    It was a defiant statement.

Manchester United won their first Women’s FA Cup trophy in style as they comfortably beat first-time finalists Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium.

England international Ella Toone scored a stunning goal on the stroke of half-time and Spurs never recovered, with Rachel Williams and Lucia Garcia extending United’s lead after the break.

It was a second successive final appearance for United but they shrugged off last year’s disappointing defeat by Chelsea to pick up a first major women’s trophy.

Having received a personal message before kick-off from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chairman of Ineos - who have a minority shareholding in Manchester United - this is a significant piece of silverware which kick-starts a new era for the club.

Marc Skinner’s side played with confidence from the start and imposed their dominance on set-pieces, missing several chances, before Toone eventually produced an unstoppable strike.

Clutching the badge on her shirt and sprinting back to celebrate in front of family watching on in the stands, United academy graduate Toone capped off a fairytale afternoon in London.

Former Spurs forward Williams, 36, played her part and now has her hands on the trophy 12 years after glory with Birmingham City in 2012 – the last time a club outside of the Women’s Super League’s current top three had won the competition before this season.

But it was Garcia’s ruthless double in the second half that put United out of sight and Tottenham, who have shown immense progress in manager Robert Vilahamn’s first season, were always second best.

It was a disappointing display from Spurs, who beat Manchester City and Leicester City en route to the final, but their appearance at Wembley was a statement of intent for their future ambitions.

    Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal

Erik ten Hag walks in the rainImage source, Getty Images

In his pre-match programme notes, Erik ten Hag had called for his side to show fight and make amends for the 4-0 defeat they suffered against Crystal Palace last week.

But, for Roy Keane, that fight was nowhere to be seen.

"You look at that last half an hour - the decision making, nobody digging anybody out, people making mistakes and falling over, and everyone just walking away, nobody putting demands on each other," he added.

"That United team there - so bad."

In isolation, a narrow loss to title-chasing Arsenal was arguably not a bad result for a side who started the day eighth and 29 points behind the Gunners.

But it was their 14th defeat of the season in the Premier League – more than any other side in the top half of the table - that leaves them in danger of no European football next term.

They have also lost nine games at Old Trafford this term - their joint-most at home in a season - and have conceded 82 goals in all competitions, which is their most since 1970-71.

  15. What do the stats say about Arsenal's chances?published at 07:24 British Summer Time 13 May

    Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal

According to Opta,, external Arsenal's chances of winning the Premier League now stand at 41.3%, while Manchester City remain favourites on 58.7%.

The Gunners had just a 23.6% chance prior to Sunday's game - and after City won 4-0 at Fulham - illustrating the significance of their victory against United.

Arsenal host Everton on the final day of the season and City are at home to West Ham (both Sunday, 19 May at 16:00 BST).

However, a word of warning to whoever goes into the last round of fixtures trailing - no team in Premier League history has ever begun the final day in second place and gone on to win the title.

That leaves Arsenal in the bizarre situation of cheering on their biggest rivals Spurs when they face the reigning champions on Tuesday.

As Gunners forward Kai Havertz put it: "I am going to be the biggest fan of Tottenham ever! Let's hope for the best."

  16. 'Let's live one of the most beautiful days'published at 07:19 British Summer Time 13 May

    Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal

"In football there are always possibilities."

Those were the words of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta after their nervy 1-0 victory at Manchester United returned them to the top of the Premier League table and kept the title race alive heading into the final week of the season.

The Gunners are now one point clear of second-placed Manchester City, although Pep Guardiola's side have a game in hand against Tottenham on Tuesday.

Whatever the result of that game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Arsenal's win at Old Trafford does ensure the battle for the title will go down to the last day.

"Today we wanted to open that gate," Arteta told Sky Sports. "In front of our people let's live one of the most beautiful days that we have lived together.

"We will be sat watching the game [between Tottenham and Manchester City] and it's true we need the result in order to achieve it."

As Manchester United chased an equaliser against Arsenal on Sunday, the bright blue sky above Old Trafford rapidly gave way to thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Those conditions could easily act as a metaphor for the Red Devils' season, where hopes of battling with the Gunners and Manchester City at the top of the table have turned to frustration at another campaign of disappointment.

In years gone by, games between Manchester United and Arsenal were meetings between two sides battling at the top of the table but this time the role of Erik ten Hag’s side was to be the spoiler in their rival's title race, a task they ultimately fell short in.

“This is one of the worst Manchester United sides ever,” ex-Red Devils midfielder Robbie Savage said bluntly, as he watched his former side try in vain to find an equaliser against the Gunners.

In the end, Leandro Trossard's first-half goal proved decisive as Arsenal left Old Trafford with three points that moved them top of the table and ensured they take the fight with Manchester City for the Premier League title down to the final day.

"The disappointment for me, particularly the last half an hour, was Manchester United," the club's former captain, Roy Keane, said on Sky Sports.

"Against that team today, I bet Arsenal couldn't believe how bad United were."

  18. Trossard delivers for Gunnerspublished at 07:05 British Summer Time 13 May

    Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League and ensured the title race will go to the final day with victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Gunners delivered an unconvincing display against a severely depleted United side but did enough to secure the win that puts them one point ahead of Manchester City having played a game more.

Leandro Trossard struck after 20 minutes when lazy defending from struggling veteran Casemiro played Kai Havertz onside and his cross was turned in by the Belgian at the near post.

United showed plenty of endeavour but suffered from a glaring lack of quality and never seriously tested Arsenal keeper David Raya, as their own hopes of European football next season faded further.

Arsenal must now hope north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur do them a favour by getting a result at home to Manchester City on Tuesday.

The Gunners host Everton in their final game of the season next Sunday, while City are at home to West Ham.

It's the final week of the 2023-24 Premier League season and the title race is going down to the wire after Arsenal beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

That win puts the Gunners one point clear at the top of the table but second-placed Manchester City have a game in hand.

Man City play that extra match on Tuesday at Tottenham.

It wasn't all bad news for Manchester United this weekend, though, with the Red Devils winning their first ever Women's FA Cup following a comprehensive 4-0 against Tottenham at Wembley.

We'll be reacting to both of those games and also looking ahead to tonight's clash between Champions League-chasing Aston Villa and Liverpool.
