Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I would have loved it if the score would have been 3-2 to us in the end."

On Mo Salah: "Two goals and one assist. He was a constant threat in the last half hour.

"He definitely helped the team with goals, threats and assists. The whole team's second half performance was much better."

On Caoimhin Kelleher's mistake: "He has done remarkably well for us and even today he was good for us.

    "Unfortunately, he misjudged the situation."

All this talk of a crisis at Villa was ridiculously overblown. In this winless streak, we've lost away games to Spurs, Club Brugge, Liverpool and Chelsea. That's not a crisis, it's a tough run of games. Three points tonight and a little perspective please.

Newcastle goalscorer Fabian Schar on Prime: "We deserved a point as a minimum, we created so many chances. We conceded poor goals but were the better team.

"We deserved and wanted a lot more. We always believe. The game was crazy and at least we're not on the losing side.

"To be honest I was on the stretch so I was just trying to keep it in play and put it in a dangerous area. Obviously it was a great goal!

"They punished us for our errors tonight. We have to be consistent to move up the table."

I thought that too, Jon. Aston Villa looked back to their best.

By the way, Villa have lost just one of their past 12 home Premier League games (W5 D6), scoring 2+ goals in nine of those matches. In that run however Villa have now only kept two clean sheets.

Jon Evans: Thought that was a much better performance by Villa. Not perfect but better. Hopefully that'll help give some confidence and get things going again.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice talking to Amazon Prime: "What a night. Manchester United have a new manager so we knew it would be a test. We stuck to the game plan and we could've had three or four.

"When you go up for a corner it's a chance to score a goal. To score both of them from corners, [set-piece coach] Nico [Jover] will be buzzing and I'm so happy. It's more just seeing clips and I know the weight I need to put on the ball and it's just about repetition. I put a few good balls in and could've had a couple of assists so it was nice to get one.

"When you have a blip in the league you get written off. We stick together as a group and we knew the run of results were not good enough, now we're starting to see a turn of that. People get carried away. You just need to be around it in February time. Liverpool have dropped points, they're seven away so we will see what happens."

In the final third there was not much going on from Manchester United.

Rasmus Hojlund was isolated at times, he didn't create any clear-cut chances.

I admit that in the second half, the storm was there for Manchester United. Ruben Amorim said earlier that a storm was going to come for his team and it came tonight.

The set-pieces were a big problem for them and Arsenal scored twice from them. Now it's back to the training ground to fix the mistakes.

Response to Mike, Glasgow 22.10. Agreed. A few years ago this probably would've been a draw. It says that when Arsenal play against a team set up to defend and frustrate they now have an answer.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Amazon Prime: "How do I feel? Positive, that was much better from us. You know with the quality Liverpool have off the bench we could have an issue and that's what happened.

"But our mental quality came to the fore and we got the equaliser. We had chances to make it 2-0, we scored three goals and looked dynamic and energetic.

"I am really proud. We went toe-to-toe and matched them, it's our best of the season. Our gameplan was to be ourselves which is difficult against a team like Liverpool, it's a delicate balance.

"Alexander Isak was really good tonight, if we get our players firing we are some team."

  11. 'Unless it is mathematically over you cannot count out City'published at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

FT: Man City 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Gael Clichy
Former Manchester City and Arsenal defender on Amazon Prime

As long as mathematically it is not over you cannot count Man City out of the title race.

The Premier League is one of the most competitive leagues in the world. Three days ago there was a gap of 11 points and then the best team as of today, Liverpool, dropped points.

There are going to be twists and turns. For sure if they get their players back from injury Man City are going to be there, 100%.

We are not talking about a team that has won the FA Cup or a Carabao Cup or the Premier League just once. City are a team that over the last ten years have won a lot, a Treble, four titles in a row, we have never seen this before. Maybe perhaps at times that is taken for granted.

People were clapping their hands because we are not used to seeing them lose, but you don't perform this way for ten years just like that.

There is no perfection in football but over the last ten years Man City have been close. In the way that they play and the way that they have been run, City have been there.

United need some new players - some good ones. Not one of their players would get into the Arsenal, Liverpool or City teams.

Arne Slot and Liverpool might have come here expecting to win this game, but Newcastle were very, very good and good value for the draw.

It's a good thing for Eddie Howe to say after the game that he is disappointed that Newcastle haven't won it. They went toe-to-toe with one of the best sides in Europe right now and perhaps a draw was the fair result.

But for their manager to say that they could've won the game and be disappointed in front of a capacity crowd at St James' Park, it speaks volumes of that Newcastle performance.

    On Arsenal's set-pieces...

For me it is always about the delivery.

None of it works unless the delivery is on point. You can see how accurate they are.

The delivery happens and the movement happens - Arsenal seem so effective from them.

Arsenal recognise in order to be this bulletproof team they have to be excellent in every department of the game.

Set-pieces are a massive part of the game which often gets neglected.

There is a long way to go in the season yet. I liked the performance from Man City tonight but in a few days they play Crystal Palace away which will be another difficult game.

Maybe the type of chance missed by Chris Wood tonight will go in at the weekend, we don't know. City have to look for the positives, there were plenty tonight, but there is a long way to go.

BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola fears the victory over Nottingham Forest tonight may have come at a cost.

Manuel Akanji went off at half-time and Nathan Ake was forced off in the second-half with what appeared to be a hamstring issue.

"We needed it," said Guardiola of the victory. "The club and the players, everyone needed to win. But it is just one win. The problems continued with Manuel and Nathan.

"Nathan doesn’t look good. We will see tomorrow. He could not continue and we will see in three days what will happen.

"I am sad for Nathan. Manu maybe in Turin. Nathan will be longer."

Ake had five weeks out with a hamstring injury earlier this season.
