There are more English-born players in Atletico Madrid's starting XI than Liverpool's.

That's because former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has been recalled to Diego Simeone's side.

Tonight is the first time Liverpool have not named a single Englishman in their starting XI for a major European match.

English-born Joe Gomez, Freddie Woodman, Rio Ngumoha and Jayden Danns are all on the bench.

Chelsea fan here, not confident at all. Defence has a lot of work to do and of course it wouldn't be a Chelsea game if an ex-player doesn't score against us tonight.

  5. 'It was never going to be Ekitike over Isak'published at 19:28 BST 17 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (20:00 BST)

    Julien Laurens
European football expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

On whether Hugo Ekitike would have signed for Liverpool had he known Alexander Isak was being signed: I really don't think so, no. He signed after a first approach from Liverpool to Newcastle for Isak, when they closed the door. That was before Isak went on strike and stopped training with them and then Liverpool reverted to Ekitike, who was on his way to Newcastle because he was supposed to be the replacement, or to play together if nobody came for Isak.

We knew that as soon as Isak was fit that the one to be dropped was Ekitike. It was just very clear. Can they play together? Of course they can. You could play Ekitike from the start but off the left, but that's not really his position.

It was just one of Ekitike and Isak [in the team] and it was never going to be Ekitike over Isak if Isak was fit.

  6. 'Isak's best position is striker'published at 19:27 BST 17 September

Arne Slot, Manager of Liverpool, speaks to the media prior to the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD1 match between Liverpool FC and Atletico de Madrid at Anfield on September 17, 2025 in Liverpool, England.Image source, Getty Images

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking on TNT Sports on handing Alexander Isak his first start: "This was the plan all along. This is why he was not involved in the Burnley game, so he could have some proper sessions at the time he was with us. That's what you need in pre-season as well. You don't start by playing friendlies, you start with a proper training week and at the end of that training week you can play 45, maybe 60 minutes, and that's what we're going to see with him today."

On starting Isak or Hugo Ekitike up front or out wide: "No, everything is always possible, so they can but I think for Alex number nine is by far his best position. Hugo has played in the past when he was younger as a winger as well, but then he started to grow more and more and more. Although Cody Gakpo shows that even if you are tall you can still be a very good winger, so Hugo is a player that could play off the left side, not in the way Cody or Mo is.

"In general, I think both of them are more number nines than another position."

On what he's learnt from the last 16 exit last year: "Not only the game we played against them (PSG), what I liked a lot from PSG is that they were so aggressive in their pressing. It is maybe a little bit easier if you are playing in the weekend in the French league, which is still a good league but not as good as the Premier League, so he could rest once in a while players as well to have them completely ready to have them ready for the game in the week."

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said he is "thankful" to Nicolas Jackson, who is about to face his parent club.

The striker is on a season-long loan at Bayern Munich from Chelsea.

"I am thankful to Nico because if we achieved what we achieved last year, it is because of all of the players including Nicolas who was with us," said Maresca.

"I texted him after he left the club to thank him for last season and wished him all the best. He is a good guy, with us he was good and working well."

I think Slot is making a reasonable decision to drop Kerkez. He has been a bit reckless in recent matches picking up quite a few yellows. Robertson also brings a lot of UCL experience to this Liverpool team.

  10. 'We're playing a fantastic team in a stadium I love'published at 19:23 BST 17 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (20:00 BST)

    Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone on the challenge facing his side at Anfield: "I am looking at getting better, playing a fantastic opponent in a stadium I love.

"We will try to hurt them in the game whenever we can. They are direct, they have very quick transitions, they interpret the game in a very simple way to get players into the box, they use their wide players and they have a wonderful centre-back who can knock the ball around.

"This simplicity of the game is something that maybe some people don't see, how hard they work, how good their footballers are and their manager did wonderful, extraordinary things last season."

  13. 'Going to be a difficult game'published at 19:21 BST 17 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson, speaking on TNT Sports: "Anfield nights are special. I'm very lucky that I've been here for eight years now, it's been some amazing games, some amazing nights here. The fans make it special on a Champions League night, so hopefully the same today. We want to get off to a good start. We've had a good league campaign last season, then got out in the last 16 but the league campaign was pretty spot on and we know we need to get off to a good start to get in the top eight to get to the last 16."

On their meeting with Atletico Madrid in 2020: "It was a madness game. I think the next day we all went into lockdown, which was even more madness to think how long ago that was. We know how good this team can be, the manager and the players, they've got so much quality in the squad and they showed that the last time they came here with how difficult they made it over two legs.

"It's going to be another difficult game but we believe if we do the right things we can get the right result to get our campaign off to a good start."

  14. Red card rescindedpublished at 19:20 BST 17 September

    Olympiacos 0-0 Pafos

We've had no goals in Greece and only one shot on target but no shortage of drama.

As said earlier, Pafos were reduced to 10 men in the first half and Olympiacos thought they were a player down themselves after Mehdi Taremi was given his marching orders.

His red was changed to a yellow after a quick VAR check though.

  15. 'The beginning is very important tonight'published at 19:19 BST 17 September

Bayern Munich v Chelsea (20:00 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to TNT Sports: "The beginning of the game is very important, the first 10-15 minutes, but it is a game of 90 to 100 minutes. For sure the beginning is very important tonight.

"They [Bayern] are for sure a very good team. For me one of the favourites in this competition. But at the same time I think any team can have weakness and we are going to try to exploit them tonight."

On whether the pressure is on Bayern not his side: "No I feel pressure. When you are a Chelsea manager or a Chelsea player you have the duty to try to win all of the games. So we also have pressure and we are going to try to win the game."

England captain Harry Kane will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky at Bayern Munich as they embark on a new Champions League campaign.

In his first season they lost to two late goals from Joselu away to Real Madrid in the semi-finals, while last season they bowed out to Inter Milan in the last-eight.

Kane, who joined Bayern in 2023, is aware fans will expect the team to challenge for the trophy.

"You know my first year at Bayern with Thomas [Tuchel] we were really unlucky not to get to the final with a last-minute goal and even last year I thought over the two legs against Inter Milan we were probably the better team," Kane told BBC Sport.

"But as we know in these competitions it’s about small moments, small details and we didn’t quite do that last year."

  17. Liverpool's first choice front three?published at 19:16 BST 17 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (20:00 BST)

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live at Allianz Arena

On whether this is the first choice front three for Liverpool:

It could be. With the amount of money they spent on Wirtz, Salah goes without saying, and yes Isak as well. I just love it, the fact that we are talking about all those attacking players and then there's Frimpong and Robertson who just want to attack as well. It's brilliant.

It was the team news Liverpool fans have been waiting for from the moment Alexander Isak completed his British record £125m move from Newcastle United on transfer deadline day.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot assured supporters after Sunday's win at Burnley that Isak would be involved against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, and it is from the start.

How long he plays remains to be seen, but just the sight of him in a Liverpool shirt adds spice to this big night.

Hugo Ekitike, who has made such an impressive start at Liverpool folllowing his £70m switch from Eintracht Frankurt, drops down to the bench in what is an another indication of the firepower Slot has at his disposal.

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany says it is "special" for on-loan striker Nicolas Jackson to face parent club Chelsea - but he does not want him to feel "pressure".

The 24-year-old joined the German champions after an on-off transfer saga with the knowledge he would be able to face the Blues in the Champions League in his second match at his new club.

"It'll certainly be a special game for him - there's no doubt about that," Kompany said.

"My wish is that he scores a lot of goals for us. I think he'll achieve that. But he doesn't have the pressure from me."
