You look at this Arsenal side and feel it's not far away form its full strength.

They've lost Ben White recently but there are arguments as to whether he will be in their first-choice defence. But Mikel Arteta's got Martin Odegaard back and he has been the missing component for this side.

Odegaard is more than just a captain. He's the creative spark, especially when the opposition defenders are tightening on the edge of their defensive area. He could be the key to an Arsenal win tonight.

  2. 'It's a must-win match for Arsenal'published at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November

You can see that Mikel Arteta is taking this match seriously, because he made quite a few changes for the Premier League game against Nottingham Forest. He wanted his players fresh and firing for his game.

They probably will still qualify for the next stage, but it's a must-win match for Arsenal if they want to be one of the top seeds and also miss out on an extra game in the New Year.

In 2006 I was watching Man City at the Etihad, a squad containing some promising youngsters like Joe Hart, Micah Richards and Nedum Onuaha as well as a lot of journeyman players, wondering if we’d stay up in the Premier League. So the current situation is nothing new to City fans

  5. 'Arsenal with Odegaard back look better than ever'published at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November

    Sporting v Arsenal (20:00 GMT)

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

‌Arsenal should have been sorely tested against a resurgent Nottingham Forest, but they weren’t. At the game it was clear that there was a chasm-like gulf in class, that the home team never looked like stumbling into.

‌The mutual understanding of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard was extraordinary, bordering on psychic as I totally failed to shut up about during the live BBC commentary. The latter was playing on a different level to anyone else and several levels above every Forest player.

‌Odegaard was sublime, almost balletic, seeing spaces, gliding into them and effortlessly making passes that his opponents couldn’t even imagine. It all reminded me of Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva at their peak.

‌Maybe this comparison speaks volumes. For all the talent in that over 30s gang of KDB, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan, the level of creativity and control at City has dipped dramatically this season. Arsenal with Odegaard back in the side look as good if not better than ever, and this was without the rested Declan Rice and Kai Havertz.

  7. Raya unaffected by enforced defensive changespublished at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November

    Sporting v Arsenal (20:00 GMT)

    Arsenal

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya does not believe he has been affected by changes to defensive personnel enforced by injuries and suspensions in recent weeks.

Although Riccardo Calafiori returned from a spell out injured at the weekend, that came after news that Ben White is set to be out for a few months following knee surgery.

"I don't think it has affected me in any way," said the Spain international before the Gunners' Champions League game at Sporting on Tuesday.

"We have had some injuries but we have a great squad. We rely on anyone that can play in those positions and I know they're going to do their job 100%.

"No matter who plays there, we feel confident that they're going to do the right job."

Erling Haaland has been directly involved in 49 goals in 43 appearances in the Champions League, with 44 goals and five assists.

If he scores or assists against Feyenoord, he would reach 50 goal involvements in fewer appearances than any other player in the competition's history (current record is 45 games, by Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2004).

2006, I went to my first away European game as a hammer against Palermo, an experience to say the least. Never thought I'd see another and then Moyes came along. Game-wise, I was mad on Fifa 2006 (Ronaldinho/Rooney cover)

While you ponder, we'll go back to the football build-up.

Manchester City will see tonight's fixture as the ideal opportunity to end their run of five straight defeats in all competitions and record a convincing win.

The two sides have met only twice before - in the group stage of the 2017-18 Champions League when Manchester City won both encounters without conceding goal, winning 4-0 away and 1-0 at home.

Despite their recent form their home record in the Champions League is a frightening prospect for any opposition team. They are currently on a run of 33 home games without a non-penalty shootout loss in the Champions League.

  16. 'We have to resolve' defensive fragilities - De Bruynepublished at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November

Manchester City playmaker Kevin de Bruyne says "everyone is down about the five losses" but they "have to move on" to try to turn their performances around.

"I wouldn't say [it has been] dark, it has been a bit chaotic," the Belgian said. "I have seen so many people pass around the medical area, discussing who's playing and not playing. There has been so many people playing who shouldn't have been playing.

"The games against Sporting, Brighton and Bournemouth were all over the place. Before Tottenham it seemed all right and then we had a defeat.

"Everyone is a bit down about the five losses but we have to take it and move on."

  19. De Bruyne future a key issue for Citypublished at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November

Man City v Feyenoord (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Kevin de Bruyne seemed quite relaxed when he chatted about his future before Manchester City's Champions League encounter with Feyenoord.

De Bruyne has naturally been more concerned about the groin issue he thought was nothing but kept him out for weeks.

Manager Pep Guardiola does not believe the 33-year-old will commit to another season unless he feels capable of making a significant contribution.

Yet a decision will have to be made soon because plans for next season and beyond need to be put in place.

De Bruyne is one of City's highest earners and, when fit, is their most creative force. If he leaves, a replacement will be required - but there will also be room on the wage bill to make the alterations Guardiola will be demanding around a squad that contains a larger than ideal number of over 30s.

Having kept City waiting for a decision on his own future, Guardiola is not in the strongest position to demand clarity from others.

But he needs it. The answer could shape how City look for the next couple of years.
