Summary

  1. KICK-OFFpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time

    Southampton 0-1 Arsenal

We're back under way at St Mary's.

  2. Race for Europepublished at 17:00 British Summer Time

Right, there’s only 45 minutes plus stoppage time left for the Premier League 2024-25 campaign.

Nerve-wracking times if your team is involved in the race for Europe!

    As it stands…

Manchester City have their Champions League spot confirmed as they lead Fulham 1-0.

Newcastle already have a place in Europe due to their EFL Cup win, but a win would seal a Champions League spot.

Chelsea are level at the City Ground – as it stands they are holding on to their Champions League place.

Aston Villa will be heading into the Europa League - a downgrade to this season’s Champions League football.

Nottingham Forest will be heading into the Conference League.

Brentford are still within a chance of European football. If Chelsea finish seventh, or Chelsea finish sixth AND Newcastle come seventh (this outcome would require a fairly unlikely combination of results, such as Newcastle losing 4-0 and Chelsea losing 1-0).

Brighton will need to produce a comeback at Spurs and results to go their way to have a chance of moving back up to eighth.

Playing the percentages? Hojlund with a heavy touch away from goal and defenders getting back. No guarantee of a goal at all, crazy from Martinez!

  4. Martinez's last action in a Villa shirt?published at 16:56 British Summer Time

    Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

If that was to be Emiliano Martinez's last action in an Aston Villa shirt, what a disastrous way for it to end. He gave referee Thomas Bramall no option as he sprinted outside his penalty area and barged Rasmus Hojlund to the ground as the striker looked to take the ball around him.

Martinez, a World Cup winner with Argentina, was in tears last week after the 2-0 win over Tottenham at Villa Park, with that leading to speculation that he would be leaving the club in the summer no matter what.

Much to the home fans' delight, Martinez had to trudge the length of the Old Trafford pitch before disappearing down the tunnel in the opposite corner of the stadium.

But Unai Emery will also be unhappy at Matty Cash's underhit backpass from the halfway line that released Hojlund.

With that red card will that be the end of Villa's hopes of making the Champions League? They are down to 10 in a match they need to win, although it's goalless at the break.

  5. Subdued at St. James' Parkpublished at 16:54 British Summer Time

    HT: Newcastle 0-0 Everton

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at St James' Park

Lots of shots of Newcastle United fans biting their fingernails - and no wonder. It's all very nervous at St. James' Park.

Everton have looked the more composed and dangerous side, while Newcastle just have not got going.

At least manager Eddie Howe now has the chance to get them in the dressing and do some sorting out.

  6. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:53 British Summer Time

    Fulham 0-1 Man City

Manchester City are on course for the Champions League, stretching their presence in Europe's top club competition to a 15th straight season.

Andrew: I’d love to know what Martinez argument for not being sent off was. It was as deliberate a foul as it gets. I know there are rumours of him leaving, it will be a real shame if that’s his last action as a Villa man

Might be one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen from a GK.

  8. 'Trent might come on'published at 16:52 British Summer Time

    HT: Liverpool 0-1 Crystal Palace

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on BBC 5 Sports Extra Live at Anfield

It looks like Trent Alexander-Arnold might come on.

Watching down below he is going through a vigorous warm-up.

He's the only one who has gone out to warm-up.

  9. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:51 British Summer Time

    Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa never got going here!

And their Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread after the dismissal of Emiliano Martinez.

A big second half coming up for Unai Emery's side.

For Manchester United though, it's been one of the best halves they've produced all season.

  10. Martinez playing the percentages?published at 16:51 British Summer Time

    Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport chief football news reporter at Old Trafford

In one sense, that was a crazy decision by Emi Martinez.

He did not attempt to play the ball and in blocking off Rasmus Hojlund knew he would get a red card.

But was it the lesser of two evils?

If Hojlund had gone round him, the Dane would have had an empty goal in front of him.

As it is, United got a free-kick, which they wasted, and Villa are down to 10 men, but the scores are still level.

They could still win this, in which case Martinez will have done the right thing.

  11. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:51 British Summer Time

    Tottenham 1-0 Brighton

As it stands, Spurs will avoid the ignominy of finishing just one place above the drop zone and climb two places to 15th, above Manchester United and Wolves.

That would still be Spurs' worst finish since the 1993–94 season.

  12. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time

    Ipswich 0-1 West Ham

James Ward-Prowse's goal shortly before half-time has been the difference so far at Portman Road.

The hosts have had a couple of chances, but Ward-Prowse's goal and the nature of how Ipswich gifted it away sums up the Tractor Boys' return to the Premier League in a nutshell.

  13. Postpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time

That charge wouldn't have looked out of place at Murrayfield or Twickenham.

It was a proper body check.

  14. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time

    Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

Unai Emery sacrifices Marco Asensio as Robin Olsen comes in to guard the goal for Aston Villa.

  15. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time

    Bournemouth 0-0 Leicester

All square at the Vitality Stadium.

    It's not been a thriller.

  16. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time

    Liverpool 0-1 Crystal Palace

Ismaila Sarr scores the only goal at Anfield so far.

Not what Liverpool fans were hoping for on the pitch but the atmosphere is still joyous.

  17. 'Martinez nowhere near the ball'published at 16:49 British Summer Time

    Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa

    Sarah Mulkerrins
BBC Sport reporter at Old Trafford

Emi Martinez came racing out of his area and crunched into Rasmus Hojlund. Hands high into the shoulder of the forward, nowhere near the ball.

  18. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time

    Wolves 0-1 Brentford

Brentford go into the break with a slender advantage and more importantly, in eighth place.

But Wolves have threatened and will hope to fight back in the second half.

  19. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time

    Newcastle 0-0 Everton

A frustrating first half for Newcastle. It remains goalless at St James' Park.

Both teams have gone close and Jordan Pickford has made a few very important saves so far.

  20. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time
