Dear Forest fans. I’m sure you’re disappointed today. But in time, I hope you appreciate the season you’ve had and then next season fully embrace the Europa Conference League. That tournament was never really intended for the likes of Chelsea, or City or even Spurs. It is intended exactly for clubs like ours. Big clubs, with passionate fans, who don’t always get to watch European football under the lights nowadays. And you go in with a decent chance of celebrating with a trophy at the end of it. I know it’s not what you wanted, and I’m not claiming it’s ‘79 and ‘80 again, but if you embrace it then it really is great fun and a journey that I fully recommend. Congratulations on a superb season. All the best.

    Newcastle United

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes speaking Sky Sports: “Today was not our day but the Premier League is 38 games and not about one game. I think we deserve [it] a lot, to be in the Champions League. It has been an unbelievable year for us. A first trophy after 70 years. In the last three years, two times in the Champions League. What a time to be at Newcastle United, I’m very happy. I think we deserve it, I’m very happy. Frustrated about the game today, but there is nothing better than the Champions League."

On finding out Newcastle had qualified for the Champions League: “I realised that we were going with the supporters. We celebrated and then I asked the bench and it was 2-0 to Manchester United. It’s a strange feeling because for me, we should win this game, we should win. It was not beautiful, but everything you work for is when you get Champions League."

On this season: “Feel very well, feel unbelievable. I think for me, it has been an unbelievable year. First year as a captain, played 38 of 38 games in the Premier League. I’m very, very happy. Winning a trophy for this club. What a season. I will always remember this one. I’m very, very happy and proud of our team, of myself, of these fans. Next season, we go back again. We never stop. We’ve won a cup, but we want more."

On the team: "We have improved a lot, but I think we’re not at the level that I want. I think for next season, we are going to need more players to be honest with you because I think the squad is a little bit short. We have seen it last year when we played in the Champions League, we lost some players for injury and then it was busy for us. I think we can improve our level because next year, our season will have one more competition. We need to work hard now, have an amazing holiday. We need to improve of course but we’re very, very happy."

  3. 'If you want to keep improving we have to have the same tools as the others'published at 19:36 British Summer Time

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Man City

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva speaking to MOTD: "It's definitely not the result to finish on a high at home. We had some moments in terms of chances that we did create. There were probably enough to get a different result but City were more clinical.

"They were leading and the penalty killed our hopes really. We need to be more careful in that moment. We had two players ready to go in and have an impact [as substitutes] so unfortunately for us it was a crucial moment."

On achieving the club's record points tally in the Premier Leaguer (54): "It's a storied club, and we achieved something that no-one achieved before. Until the last stages of the season, we were in decisive moments to fight for some European spots and arriving where we we did in the FA Cup (quarter-finals) is a good season for the club. We improved from last season and that's the main thing."

On the future of Tom Cairney and Kenny Tete: "Let's hope in the next few days you have some news."

On his own future: "I think it's not really important. I have a contract [until 2026] and I have more important things to do to prepare the club to move forward. I'm talking about development and improvements, the club knows what that means. We cannot stand still at the level that we are and if you want to keep improving we have to have the same tools as the others."

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold speaking to Sky Sports: "I didn't know what to expect after what happened a few weeks ago, stepping out at Anfield. I wanted to play for the club one more time. I said that to the manager and he trusted me to go in there at half-time.

"The reaction that I got means everything to me. I've played hundreds of games for the club. I've never felt so loved and cared for than today. From the bottom of my heart, I hope that one day the fans and supporters of this club will be able to recognise the hard work and everything that I have done for the team. There wasn't a day, a minute, when I didn't think about the team. From six years old, to 26 years now. Twenty years is a very long time. I have loved every single minute of it, the ups and downs. It has been an honour and a privilege for me to be a part of this club.

"This is all I've ever known. I'll remember these moments for the rest of my life, especially a day like today. It goes down as the best day for me in my life. A very special day and a very special achievement for the team and for the club.

On what it means to him to play for Liverpool: "Everything. Like I said, I've given absolutely everything."

Liverpool boss Arne Slot speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Since they stepped on the pitch at Anfield or an away game everything they got and that's what they did today again. Going down to 10 men, being 1-0 down, a normal team or a normal club would probably lose that game but this team, these fans just don't accept losing a game of football, so they both cooperated again, worked harder and we managed to score a goal which, in my opinion, we definitely deserved as well."

On how it felt to lift the trophy: "Special, a nice thing about it is when you've already won it four weeks ago you can experience two of these moments when it's normally only one in other countries. And to do it at a club who have waited 35 years for this moment to be there when we lift the trophy, I could feel this today and I could feel this also in the Tottenham game, we couldn't have asked for more to experience this."

On being 12 months on from Jurgen Klopp leaving and singing his name: "Incredible. That moment was incredible what he did, to sing for me in a moment which was so special for him to already want to help the club, the team, me for the next season and that's what he did in that moment and what he did even before that because he left the team in such a good place, disciplined, quality and that's what made my life, my job easier to start and life as a Premier League manager is never easy because of all the competitors we had but he couldn't have left the club in a better place than he did."

On if it will be a busy summer for the club: "We already having a busy summer because we extended Mo [Salah] and Virgil [Van Dijk] and we are trying to strengthen the squad but that is what we always try, if we feel there is possibility to do so. Last season we decided to keep the team together.

"Someone told me, I'm not completely sure it's true, that since Alex Ferguson won the league there has never been a team that had so many academy minutes as we had this season. Maybe if I'm wrong then someone told me wrong, so that's was, and is, very special but we want more because our competitors want more as well and they've invested already a lot of money last season, some of them again during the winter and I think if you want to keep competing you have to do certain things over there as well, but again, we are very happy with the squad we have."

  9. 'This club has to play in the Champions League, I have to play in the Champions League'published at 19:31 British Summer Time

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Man City

    Manchester City

On boss Pep Guardiola saying that securing Champions League qualification this season is 'like winning a title', Manchester City striker Erling Haaland told MOTD: "It's not a title feeling but I know what he means, and I agree with him. It's really important.

"This club has to play in the Champions League, I have to play in the Champions League, Pep has to manage the team in the Champions League, so it's important and we're relieved now to be there because it's been a hard and difficult season. We're really happy.

"We came back after a really difficult period and we've been working through it together. It's not been easy but we've shown great character. In the end we've come third and we're relieved, we're really happy. We're focused on going into the Club World Cup in good shape and to attack that."

On whether he knew if he would take a penalty, if City were awarded one: "Yeah, I knew it, yeah."

On what's needed going forward: "I mean, you cannot win it every year. No-one ever won it four years in a row. Now we came third, but City have won [the league in] six out of eight years. If I was a City fan - which I am - I'm not complaining. I wish we won it this year as well but you cannot win every year. Next year we're going to do everything we can to make it a much better season."

Wolves manager Vitor Pereira, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Very proud of my players, the club and our supporters.

“We wanted to finish with a win, but it was not possible in a good game with chances for both sides. It was a game we could win, but [Brentford] could have won also.

“We lost two positions [in the table]. I’m not happy with this, but I’m very happy with what we’ve achieved this season since we arrived.

“After the City game, we committed some mistakes that were not usual. Sometimes it looks like we’re not focused in those moments. We’ve conceded some goals that we cannot concede.”

On Marshall Munetsi: “It was a fantastic goal. He’ll score more goals next season, for sure.”

On next season: “We want to do better. We need to keep our base and to start our work in the beginning of the season, competing from the beginning. In my opinion, we can’t play to avoid relegation. We have to look to the middle of the table.”

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali speaking to Premier League Productions: “It was crazy because we had a difficult game, maybe one of the two or three most difficult of the season but it doesn’t matter today. We qualified and this is so important for us because we played the last 12 or 13 games only to qualify for next season’s Champions League. We are so happy. Also, one difficult game and not the best one for me but the people here deserve the Champions League. We are happy for this."

On finding out Newcastle had qualified for the Champions League: "It was two or three minutes with suspense because we worked this week to win this game, not to lose and watch the other games but only to win this game. I think we were a little bit lucky because if you don’t play your best football, if you don’t win the game, if you lose 1-0 at home at St James’ Park. To lose two games, it has been so difficult but this is so important now. Now we look at somewhere else with the national team and holiday and we need to start much, much better than this season because this season, we worked a lot. The top five in the league, the most difficult in the world. It’s important that we play in the Champions League next season."

On this season: "We won a trophy, but after the final against Liverpool we started another small league table because it is only after Liverpool we played all for the Champions League and not for the Carabao Cup or a first trophy after 70 years. We won the trophy, and then a good three or four days for the staff, for the people of Newcastle and the city, it was amazing for everybody. After those five days, we started another season to play in the Champions League next season."

On celebrations: "I don’t know, tomorrow I fly back to Italy for five days off. We stay together tonight because we deserve it. After a difficult season, tonight is the last day of the season together with this amazing team and I think we stay together for dinner. After dinner and tonight, we think for our national teams next week."

On Jack Grealish being left out of the matchday squad: "Just a decision to travel with other players. It was a nightmare for us, for me especially, the last three or four weeks. I've got five or six players at home, that it so, so difficult."

On the Club World Cup: "It's an honour to be there, [for] what we have done in the past. We are going to prepare to compete well and prepare for next season."

The Newcastle players and their families are on the pitch celebrating, with one of the heroes of this wonderful season Dan Burn holding the EFL Cup.

They’re in disbelief that they’ve made the Champions League despite a really nervy, edgy performance and a disappointing defeat.

There were crazy scenes at the end. The Newcastle players sank to their knees thinking they were out of the top 5 before Harvey Barnes ran on to tell his team-mates the score at Old Trafford and then the players gathered around a screen on a tablet on the pitch before finally getting a chance to celebrate.

The Champions League anthem was on the tannoy straight away. What a season for Newcastle but they’ve put their fans through some tense moments tonight.

On whether he thought the fans would embrace him like they have: "It's difficult to say if I think back. I chose this club because I thought that it could happen. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking after sealing Champions League qualification: “It feels great, the achievement is huge. Naturally, when you lose the game there’s a feeling of disappointment but I think we have to override that with [the fact that] over the 38 games, we deserved to qualify for the competition. It’s a huge moment for the club.”

On this season: “So much. Throughout this year there have been so many things, not just mentally but tactically and the game evolves so quickly. It’s been a brilliant Premier League season. I think we had a difficult summer, I think there was an overhang of that early in the season. We had to fight really hard to overcome that and come back in the manner that we did, we can’t thank the players enough this year. We’ve got a great group who give their all in every game and that’s all we can ask for. Today, I think we did that. We tried to win the game, but it wasn’t to be.”

On finding out Newcastle had qualified “We were getting updated but I didn’t want it to dominate my focus. It was only when it looked like we were struggling to score in that second half and our result was in jeopardy that the other results became more important for us, but all the way through the game we were still trying to find a way to score and claw ourselves a way back into the game. I think there was a point with about five minutes to go that it looked like barring an amazing last five or 10 minutes, we were there.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to Match of the Day: "We wanted to finish with that positivity, that good atmosphere and vibe. We had to say goodbye to a few players and I think they deserved that to happen in a nice environment."

On Kieran Tierney's goal: "He said yesterday "I'm going to score on my last Arsenal match" and he's done it. Very happy with him. He's been a big part of the journey."

On a big summer for Arsenal: "Josh [Kroenke] has been very clear in the direction and ambition we have. We're going to try and see what we can do, make very subtle decisions, and respect what has taken us this far. There's not much improvement. We've finished second three times, reached the Champions League semi-finals. There's that little percentage we need to nail."

On Arsenal winning the Women's Champions League: "We were on the bus to Southampton cheering. The manner they've done it, playing the best team in Europe and they had difficult situations throughout the season, we're very proud."

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Man City

    Manchester City

Pep Guardiola's defiant response in his post-match news conference when asked about Jack Grealish's future: "Don't ask me about Jack. Who said I'm not happy with Jack? Rico [Lewis] was not selected, [James] McAtee was exceptional against Aston Villa and Wolves - why not ask me about McAtee? It's not personal.

"I have 24 players, I had to get rid of six players last game and five players today because [Mateo] Kovacic got sent off. I treat Jack like I think of [Abdukodir] Khusanov, McAtee and all the players who have not been but you say I'm selecting we are in trouble? It's not about that. I have 24 players, I have to get rid of five players because Kovacic was sent off in the last game.

"I'm thinking of Jack and Khusanov and McAtee. It's nothing personal with Jack. I'm the person who fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season and the next season. I'm the one who said I want Jack Grealish. Now he didn't come because he didn't come, but not something else What happens in the future is a job for Txiki [Begiristain], Hugo and the agents."
