Summary

  1. CLOSE!published at 19:51 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Swansea 0-0 Sheff Utd

Slick spin in the box from Gus Hamer after pinching possession off Swans defender Josh Key, but he can only lash an angled shot into the side-netting when a ball into the goalmouth was a better bet, percentage wise...

  2. Postpublished at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Oxford United 0-0 Luton Town

A mix up in the Oxford defence almost lets Elijah Adebayo in for Luton but he can't quite get a decent touch on the ball and Jamie Cumming grabs the ball.

That's encouraging for Luton but a worry for Oxford because it was just a long ball from the back that was misjudged.

  3. Postpublished at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Swansea 0-0 Sheff Utd

Bright start from the home team, stung by that defeat to Cardiff you'd imagine.

Liam Cullen gets on the end of a cut-back from the left of the Blades box from Ronald but can only divert his shot straight at United keeper Michael Cooper.

    Oxford United 0-0 Luton Town

Under way at the Kassam Stadium where we had quite a light show in the build-up to kick-off.

Oxford's last EFL win against Luton was in November 1992 - 16 games later they are looking to pour more misery on the travelling Hatters.

  7. 'There is a great opportunity for Sunderland tonight'published at 19:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Derby 0-0 Sunderland (19:45 GMT)

    Gary Bennett
Ex-Sunderland defender on BBC Radio Newcastle

There is a great opportunity for Sunderland tonight. We keep saying game after game if we start right and play to the level which we are capable of, we will win the game.

If you look at the 0-0 on Friday the frustration kicks in, but at the end of the day when you look at it overall it was a great result and a good performance.

If Derby want to go play football, we will win hands down - that will suit us. As a team we are up there with best three teams in the Championship.

    Championship top

So, the lead of the Championship will change again tonight as long as Sheffield United win at Swansea.

Sunderland can slide into third place with victory at struggling Derby.

If Blackburn were to lose at home to Coventry they could find themselves out of the play-off places with Middlesbrough meeting West Brom at The Riverside although of course a victory for Rovers could strengthen their grip on a top-six place.

There is a chance for Watford to jump into the top six but they would have to beat Preston first.

    Tight isn't it?

  11. Two changes apiece for Swans and Bladespublished at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Swansea v Sheff Utd (19:45 GMT)

    Swansea XI

Luke Williams has made two changes from the Swans side which was beaten 3-0 in the South Wales derby on Saturday lunchtime.

Myles Peart-Harris and Florian Bianchini return to the side with Joe Allen and Jisung Eom dropping to the bench.

Chris Wilder has also made two changes to the Blades XI which overcame Norwich 2-0 at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

Rhys Norrington-Davies is recalled in place of Sam McCallum, who is on the bench alongside Tom Davies, who is replaced in the side by Andre Brooks.

Ben Brereton-Diaz is named among the replacements after his return from Southampton.

Sheffield United head to Swansea tonight seeking to continue their ding-dong battle with Yorkshire rivals Leeds and return to the top of the Championship.

The Blades are a point off the top after Leeds overcame Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday, but are seeking a third straight win and have suffered just one defeat in eight on their travels.

The Swans are still reeling from their 3-0 defeat in their derby clash at Cardiff on Saturday lunchtime, which made it four games without a win for Luke Williams’ men in all competitions, with one goal scored and 11 conceded in that spell.

Their form is even worse against Chris Wilder’s side, losing the past four straight league encounters without scoring.

The Swans have improved at home, picking up seven points from their past three games but are now seven points adrift of the play-off places in 13th, and only eight points clear of second-bottom Luton.

  13. 'The fans are going to be important tonight'published at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Middlesbrough v WBA (19:45 GMT)

    Neil Maddison
Former Middlesbrough midfielder on BBC Radio Tees

I think the fans are going to be important tonight for Middlesbrough, and the players are going to need the fans.

I think at times it is going to get a little bit rough and at times a little bit shaky, but that is when the fans have got to get behind them.

I know people will be saying, 'we have done this season and look what they have shown us and repaid us with'. But what I will say to that is this team are still in seventh place and they are not far away from the play-offs.

While they are in seventh place, they have still got a chance of getting into the top-six and when the fans are behind the players, it means a hell of a lot.

Two significant changes for Middlesbrough this evening. Defender George Edmundson has been recalled from his loan spell by Premier League Ipswich and he is replaced by Luke Ayling, who captains the side as well.

There is also the return in midfield of USA international Aidan Morris with Dan Barlaser making way.

Former Boro hero Tony Mowbray does not change anything from the West Brom side that drew 1-1 with Stoke on Saturday. Let's see if some encouraging words and a bit of TLC provide that extra impetus.

A special reception is guaranteed at the Riverside tonight as Tony Mowbray makes an emotional return to the dugout.

A legendary former Middlesbrough player, captain and manager, he takes charge of West Brom for the first time in his second spell tonight.

The fact that it comes not long after he was given an all-clear from bowel cancer makes it even more special.

The 61-year-old is one of football's good guys, pretty much guaranteed a good reception wherever he's played or managed and his task is to build on the foundations left him by predecessor Carlos Corberan.

His first game pits him against his old club, the side he's watched more than any other during his recuperation and a side stuttering in pursuit of the top six.

Michael Carrick's team have tossed away points in recent weeks to slip to seventh and they need to show a resolve they have been accused of lacking.

  16. Sissoko in for Hornetspublished at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Watford v Preston (19:45 GMT)

    Watford XI

Watford make one change from Saturday's win at Derby: Moussa Sissoko comes in for Tom Dele-Bashiru.

Preston have switched three from their 0-0 draw at Luton.

In come midfielders Mads Frøkjær, Stefan Teitur Thordarson and Brentford loanee Jayden Meghoma for his North End debut.

Watford start the night outside the top six only on goal difference. They saw off Derby on Saturday and host Preston this evening.

Their weekend win ended a run of four games without victory to get their season going again.

They start favourites to beat North End, who are winless in three league games and are only five points above the drop zone.

  18. Changes in Derby's defencepublished at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Derby v Sunderland (19:45 GMT)

    Derby XI

Derby have to make three changes from the side that lost at home to Watford with defender Curtis Nelson out for the season with a knee injury and Eirin Cashin left out after only just recovering from injury.

Ben Osborn also makes way with Craig Forsyth, Marcus Harness and Liam Thompson coming into the side.

It is just the one alteration for Sunderland with Eliezer Mayenda's useful cameo at Burnley rewarded with a starting place at the expense of Patrick Roberts.

  19. Rovers make four changespublished at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Blackburn v Coventry (19:45 GMT)

    Blackburn XI

Four changes for Blackburn from Saturday - Balázs Tóth makes his league debut in goal with Aynsley Pears ill.

Sondre Tronstad has a hamstring injury as Joe Rankin-Costello, Tyrhys Dolan and Ryan Hedges all start for Rovers.

For Coventry, just the one change as Jake Bidwell comes in for Jay Dasilva.

    Blackburn v Coventry (19:45 GMT)

It’s been a very lean few weeks for Blackburn with only one win from their past seven league matches, including Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Oxford.

They remain a point inside the top six as they host Coventry tonight but haven’t won any of their past eight league games against the Sky Blues.

The visitors will hope to build on victory over Bristol City at the weekend as they continue to head in the right direction.
