    Didn't take long...

Preston's bright start to the season has been built on their defence, rather than their attack, but the visitors have flown out of the blocks.

A left-wing corner from Alfie Devine is flicked in the air towards the back post where Thierry Small controls and then expertly chops from his left foot onto his right and fires an angled shot low past Ivor Pandur in the Tigers goal.

    Work to do for Hull.

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Stoke

Really bright start from Stoke, and not just because they are wearing their yellow away shirt.

They have popped it around with confidence and Sorba Thomas won an early corner which was met by the head of Mo Lawal, who has reverted to right-back tonight, but Boro are able to clear.

  3. Postpublished at 19:48 BST

    Leicester 0-0 Wrexham

Plenty of confidence and plenty of the ball in the early stages for Leicester.

Wout Faes lifts a cross into the box, a flick in the middle makes it awkward for Patson Daka to keep his header down. A waste, but a promising start for the Foxes.

  4. Postpublished at 19:46 BST

    Bristol City 0-0 Ipswich

Just before kick off here tonight, Bristol City boss Gerhard Struber has confirmed captain Jason Knight will be out for "a number of weeks" after having a scan on a groin injury he sustained in the weekend draw at Preston.

It's the first time Knight has missed a league game since he joined the club in 2023 so if nothing else it'll be interesting to see how the Robins manage without him.

Right, the time for talk is over... let's see what the final matches of September have in store for us.

We are off and running in the first seven of our games, with Derby v Charlton to follow in 15 minutes' time, remember...

Mission is simple tonight for Saints - win or we'll be cut adrift and fighting a relegation battle before we know it. Our record when it comes to crunch time isn't great. I've seen nothing yet from the team that makes me believe that they have any other plan to survive the league. So uninspiring, want more desire.

This pair's last meeting was so long ago that a 21-year-old Gary Lineker was leading the line for Leicester and now they're missing a frontman like him after a 0-0 and a late, late own goal to take a point at West Brom last time out.

Patson Daka is the latest to try his luck up front. The Zambian is yet to score this season and look, if we're talking number 9s, there remains a Jamie Vardy-shaped hole missing in the Foxes attack.Wrexham on the other hand, are free-scoring.

Phil Parkinson's vibes-ball had led to them scoring 12 and conceding 13 so far. They followed up an excellent victory at Norwich with a draw with Derby last time out, as Lewis O'Brien headed for a third of the season. In fact, he Josh Windass and Kieffer Moore have 10 of their goals between them.

And a final word for two players on the Wrexham bench. Conor Coady would probably get a warm applause if he comes on, while Premier League winning squad member and Foxes cult hero Matty James can expect a rousing reception, should he get the chance to step back on the King Power pitch.

Bristol City boss Gerhard Struber makes two changes.

There's no Jason Knight for the first time in a league game since he joined the club in the summer of 2023 with the Republic of Ireland international absent because of a groin strain.

Knight's midfield spot looks to be filled by defenders Zak Vyner or Ross McCrorie (we cannot be sure just yet).

Into the first XI come George Tanner and Neto Borges, with Mark Sykes dropping to the bench.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna makes six changes with Cedric Kipre, Jens Cajuste, Jaden Philogene, Sindre Egeli, Sam Szmodics and George Hirst among the substitutes.

Jacob Greaves returns from suspension and there's are first starts for both Marcelino Nunez and Ivan Azon along with Kasey McAteer, Chuba Akpom and Jack Clarke.

We all know the Championship is a marathon, not a sprint, and many will tell you that 'nine-point weeks' like this one, when teams play Saturday-midweek-Saturday are the key to your fortunes for the season.

I was curious about last season's midweek efforts in the Championship so across the nine regular midweek rounds of last season, I have put together a points table:

    • 22 - Leeds
    • 19 - Sheff Utd
    • 17 - Burnley, Sunderland, Preston (all unbeaten)
    • 15 - Middlesbrough
    • 14 - Sheff Wed
    • 13 - Coventry, Millwall, QPR, Swansea
    • 12 - Stoke
    • 11 - Bristol City, Blackburn, Luton
    • 10 - Derby, Watford
    • 9 - Plymouth, Oxford
    • 8 - Cardiff, Hull
    • 7 - Portsmouth, West Brom, Norwich

What I took as the key points were that eventual champions Leeds were very strong and Preston's midweek form kept them up while Norwich and West Brom blew their top-six hopes in floodlit games.

But who will shine brightest in this round of fixtures?

  18. Bluebirds aiming for top spot in League Onepublished at 19:26 BST

Cardiff v Burton & Blackpool v Luton (both 19:45 BST)

Cardiff City will go top of League One if they beat Burton Albion tonightImage source, Getty Images

Cardiff could go top of League One this evening, and could not have picked a better opponent to face.

Burton are rooted to the bottom of the table, are winless in their last seven league away matches, haven’t scored in three, and have never beaten a Welsh side in the Football League.

No wonder Gary Bowyer is under massive pressure.

On the other hand, the Bluebirds have only lost once this season, kept six clean sheets in their nine League One outings and beat Premier League Burnley a week ago.

In the only other match in League One tonight, Blackpool host Luton.

The Hatters had a pattern of win-lose, win-lose in their last six away matches, and after losing to Lincoln last time, fate suggests they are destined to win at Bloomfield Road.

Add to that, Steve Bruce's Tangerines, who could escape the bottom four with a win, haven’t beaten Luton since 2003 – a run of 12 league matches.

  19. Rams rise on holdpublished at 19:24 BST

Derby County v Charlton (20:00 BST)

John Eustace speaks to BBC Radio Derby's Dominic Dietrich

Escaping the drop on the final day of last season brought huge sighs of relief around Pride Park.

John Eustace's risky decision to swap a promotion challenge with Blackburn for the muck and bullets of a relegation battle had paid off with optimism high of a better campaign this time around.

But Derby in 2025-26 have three fewer points than they did at this stage last season and are eight places worse off.

"We're seven games in, the season is 46 games," Eustace told BBC Radio Derby.

"You don't get judged where you are at the moment, you get judged where you finish and it's important we keep working hard, keep working together and see where it takes us."

The Rams are searching for a first home win of the season tonight and just a second victory of the campaign so far.

The trouble is, tonight's opponents are very much enjoying life back in the Championship with Charlton building on the momentum of promotion and having won four of their past seven games on the road.

With the joint-best defensive record in the division, Nathan Jones' Addicks aren't about to give Eustace and Derby a leg-up in their current struggles.

    Middlesbrough v Stoke (19:45 BST)

    Media caption,

Rob Edwards speaks to BBC Radio Tees' Matty Nixon

An early-season test of promotion credentials as table-topping Middlesbrough will seek to extend their perfect home record as third-placed Stoke visit.

The Potters are four points adrift of unbeaten Boro, who came back to draw 1-1 at Southampton on Saturday.

Rob Edwards' men are the third-leading scorers in the Championship while possessing the stingiest defence with just five goals conceded in their opening seven matches.

Mark Robins' Potters also came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Norwich on Saturday but after winning their first two away games, they went down 1-0 at QPR in their most recent away game and have won only one of their past nine games at Boro.

Edwards remains wary of their threat, however, telling BBC Radio Tees: "It's no surprise at all [to see them doing well], they look really solid and have a real attacking threat as well."
