Goalkeeper Sam Long was Bromley's hero as the League Two side won an EFL Cup tie for the first time, beating Ipswich on penalties.

Long saved spot-kicks from George Hirst and Ali Al-Hamadi to knock Championship side Ipswich, relegated from the Premier League last season, out at the first hurdle.

The hosts, in just their second season in the EFL, took the lead just before the break when Deji Elerewe nodded home after Omar Sowunmi headed a deep corner across goal.

Ipswich levelled when half-time substitute Ben Johnson scored on the rebound after Long had done well to turn Conor Chaplin's well-struck shot on to the crossbar.

Kieran McKenna's side have now gone out of the competition on penalties to League Two opposition for two seasons running, having lost at AFC Wimbledon in 2024-25.

They had the better of it after Johnson brought them level and Al-Hamadi missed a great chance to win it for them when he failed to convert from close range in added time.

However, Hirst could not beat Long with their first penalty and, although Blues keeper Christian Walton kept out Ashley Charles' effort, another Long save from Al-Hamadi set it up for Marcus Ifill to confidently despatch the winning kick.

With 11 Premier League sides entering the competition in the second round, Andy Woodman's side will now hope for another good draw.

In the meantime, they host Fleetwood on Saturday, while Ipswich will look to secure their first win of this new campaign against fellow relegated side Southampton on Sunday.
