Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer struck twice in time added on to force a penalty shootout

Wrexham beat Hull City in an EFL Cup first-round thriller after substitute Ollie Palmer's stoppage-time goals sent the tie into a penalty shootout.

Elliot Lee's deflected effort put the hosts ahead, but Oli McBurnie's first Hull goal brought their Championship rivals level.

Substitutes Joel Ndala and Matt Crooks put Hull 3-1 up in their 150th game in the competition.

But two dramatic injury-time goals from Palmer took the game to penalties, with Ndala's miss ensuring Wrexham won 5-3 on spot-kicks.

Wrexham's line-up showed 11 changes from the opening day loss at Southampton - with a home debut for Ryan Hardie - while the six changes in Hull's side included first starts for McBurnie and Nathan Tinsdale.

The Stok Cae Ras fell silent ahead of kick-off to remember Wrexham legend Joey Jones, who died in July aged 70.

He would have appreciated the committed start made by both teams on a warm north Wales evening, with summer signing McBurnie's header flashing wide of the post.

Tigers keeper Dillon Phillips gathered Hardie's effort and Sam Smith's header comfortably, while opposite number Arthur Okonkwo was alert to parry McBurnie's attempt.

It was an evenly matched contest before the breakthrough came just before the half-hour mark when Lee cut inside and his shot took a deflection which looped over Phillips.

But the lead lasted all of five minutes thanks to great work from Cody Drameh, who made a strong run into the area to set up McBurnie to fire past the despairing dive of Okonkwo.

Hardie put a header wide of the post less than a minute into the second half while Okonkwo denied Kasey Palmer and Wrexham's Harry Ashfield flashed an effort wide from the edge of the area.

But Hull took the lead with 20 minutes remaining when Joe Gelhardt's right-wing cross found substitute Ndala, who netted from close range.

The shot hit the back of the goal and came back out and it took a few moments for the away supporters at the opposite end of the ground to realise they were ahead.

They extended their lead with nine minutes remaining with the impressive Palmer's cross from the byeline finding Crooks, who applied the tap-in for his side's third.

But Wrexham had their own Palmer and the substitute - whose opportunities seem limited given the Dragons' array of attacking options - rescued his side with two goals in the 91st and 92nd minutes - the first coming from James McClean's cross and Ryan Barnett the provider for the second.

Two powerful headers galvanised the home support and ensured the game would be decided on penalties.

Palmer along with McClean, Lee, Josh Windass and Jack Marriott converted their kicks, while Ndala struck the woodwork with Hull's second kick.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales:

"Over the years we've had some incredible finishes to games and that was up there with the two late goals and the penalty shoot out.

"I'm pleased we showed that spirit - I think it was important for the new lads we've brought in that we go until the end.

"We showed a real determination in our character to come back."
