Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk spoke to Sky Sports after Sunday's defeat: "I think we conceded a very sloppy second goal. We worked so hard to get back into the game and we created great opportunities to score the winner but if you concede a second goal like that, that is the disappointing part.

"If you look at the game as a whole, we were far too rushed. I think they were very patient they didn't press us high but they didn't let us on the ball. We still created many opportunities to score but the reality is that we lost."

On what is next: "It is an interesting time because we have to stick together, not just us as players but as a club and the fans who want us to win."

I would have struggled to have dealt with what Harry Maguire has been through. He was a meme for years. For him to have dealt with so much, he's incredibly strong. People were laughing at him, and he's been in World Cup teams of the tournament.

It was bullying, he was getting bullied all over the place, and for him to heave dealt with that, you have to say he's a strong human being. It's not nice for his family either, so for him to come out the other side and show his ability, I couldn't be happier for him.

Harry Maguire's Manchester United contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

The word is he would be willing to take a pay cut in order to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

United's hierarchy should be getting it sorted quite quickly.

Maguire is one of those solid, reliable professionals every club needs.

Time and again, he has shown resilience when it would be easier to quit on the club. Time and again, he has shown he is capable of delivering when the pressure is at its most intense.

Maguire didn't just score the winner at Anfield yesterday. He was also a defensive rock as Liverpool pushed forward trying to find an equaliser, then a winner, then another equaliser.

You could just tell he loved every clearance as much as he loved his goal.

He, as much as anyone, deserved that moment yesterday.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire on finally securing back to back league wins: "It's embarrassing really. It's not a stat that we should even be speaking about because it is an embarrassing stat to have. Now that's out of the way let's try and make it three [wins] on Saturday against Brighton, because we have to start putting a bit more consistency together. The last three or four years we'd put in a performance like this and the following game we come down again. We have set a bench mark, there are a lot of areas we can do more, we were hanging on there and defending for the last 30 minutes or so.

"We'll analyse it. The manager strives for perfection so I'm sure he will want us to play better than we did in the second half. Great fight, big spirit, big win, but again we have to go again."

Manchester United

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's been a long-time coming. It's been a tough place for us over recent years. We know how big it is for our fans. We have the cliche of it being 'only three points' but it is more than three points that today.

"It's massive for our club, for our fans and it is a great memory they are going to have. The lads are buzzing and as cliche as it is we need to build on it now and make sure to take the confidence from it and take the fighting spirit.

"We can play better on the ball, of course we can, we were sloppy at times, but there were times where we played through them and created numerous chances, especially in the first half.

"The fight and the spirit has got to be with us every game and that is something we need to make sure we show that against Brighton next Saturday. I'm sure the fans will have a good night."

On what is next: "We won't get carried away because we can't afford that as a club, we will use it as motivation.

"In this club, it will mean a lot this week and then we have Brighton at home next week. So we have to remain calm headed."

Graham Potter wasn't out of management for long - the former West Ham manager has been appointed head coach of the Sweden men's team.

Sweden sacked Jon Dahl Tomasson last week after taking just one point from their opening four World Cup qualifiers.

Potter is tasked with getting Sweden to the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico next summer.

Despite their struggles in the qualifiers, Sweden's success in the Uefa Nations League will likely earn them a place in the World Cup play-offs in March.

"Together with the players, I want to make the fans' dream of a championship summer come true," said Potter.

So many chances, Cody Gakpo could have had three of four. But Liverpool always had an air of desperation, there was no calmness in this game.

I never felt Liverpool had that calmness. Four losses is a blow and you wouldn't have seen that coming. All the new players looked like great signings but there's now more questions than answers.

It feels a huge win for the manager [Ruben Amorim]. He got every call right. I questioned whether Harry Maguire was the right man to play. Cunha was world class. Tactically Amorim got it right. They never played out from the back and didn't invite the press.

I wouldn't go that far, but a huge win for this group of players. They stuck at it and it is a big moment for these players and they have to enjoy it. Back-to-back wins is fantastic, but they have to kick on.

As poor as Liverpool were, they had some chances so you need some luck in these games. It's a great win for the supporters, 10 years since they have won at Anfield. The players will go back into the training ground in a better place but they have to use this as a springboard to make sure they kick on.
