People are saying "Man Utd got lucky" because Liverpool hit the woodwork 3 times, but Man United could easily have been 3-0 up at half-time too, they had their fair share of good chances. You can't praise Liverpool's "mentality" when they score late winners, then deny Man United the same.

Harry Maguire's goal means Liverpool have conceded five goals from set-pieces in eight Premier League games this season.

They didn't concede any set-piece goals in their first eight Premier League games under Arne Slot last season.

  3. 'It is difficult to play against a team that mainly plays long-ball'published at 08:06 BST

    Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes his team had more than enough chances to win Sunday's game but expressed frustration at conceding from yet another set-piece.

Despite being such a strength for the Reds in 2024-25, defending set-pieces has now become an Achilles heel for Slot's side.

I haven’t heard anything about Arsenal being the biggest beneficiary of the weekend matches, nor about the quietly consistent Manchester City. If I’m being honest, the title race is now between Arsenal and Manchester City.

  5. 'There are no excuses'published at 08:00 BST

    Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot speaking to Sky Sports: "If you play a United side that comes with a low block and comes with a long balls and you know it is going to be difficult. It makes it even more difficult if it is after one minute.

"I think if you lose a game after you have lost four, you would have more emotion but there are no excuses. We need to focus on ourselves we had so many chances and we should score more, we should have defended better than we did.

"I brought on substitutions to turn the game around and they created more opportunities. But you don't have the same structure in defending and set pieces.

On the feeling of four losses: "It is a difficult moment because you know how it works in football. The main thing is, is that the players stick together."

On Mo Salah's form: "I think after games like this it is normal people are focused on individual players. We talked about the signings and now we will focus on him."

  6. 'I am really happy for the players'published at 07:55 BST

    Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim praised the spirit of his players as they held off Liverpool to win at Anfield for the first time since 2016.

Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire sealed the victory for Amorim's side and secured back-to-back wins for the very first time in his tenure.

Despite spending all that money Liverpool have gone backwards. Fullbacks are poor, as is the back-up goalkeeper. Isak is worth nowhere near the money paid. Richard Hughes as DOF should "carry the can". Man Utd total opposite with good buys & moving positively forward.

Nottingham Forest are in advanced talks to appoint Sean Dyche as their manager.

Dyche is the main contender to become the next Forest head coach following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou, and the Premier League club hope to conclude a deal on Monday.

Postecoglou was sacked 17 minutes after Forest's 3-0 defeat by Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Forest are 18th in the table after just one win in eight league games, during what has been a season of upheaval.

  10. 'If you lose four times in a row you have to have concerns'published at 07:43 BST

    Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

    Liverpool

More from Liverpool boss Arne Slot speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think people tend to forget how many chances we already had when we were 1-0 down in the first half. When you are losing there is more focus on the ball you play wrong, but in the first half Isak one on one with the keeper, Gakpo hitting the post twice, so even then we had chances to go 1-1.

"In the second half it's true that because the other team gets more and more tired and we create more. This happened against Palace, happened against Chelsea, happened today.

"Of course there are concerns. If you lose four times in a row you have to have concerns, but we know if we keep bringing these types of performances then we will have a fair chance of winning more football games. If we do a few things better then we will have an even better chance, but you are never 100% sure if in the next game you are again able to create eight, nine, ten open chances.

"Again these players played so long being 1-0 behind and fought to come back. If we have that mentality then there is a lot of positivity to bring into the upcoming games. Losing four times in a row definitely does something to a team."

Seen false dawns far too many times as a Man Utd fan. What I do hope is that it changes the media & fan narrative from a negative start to the season with questions over system, to a decent start and on par with most other teams.

    Paul, Welwyn

We've seen this all before, Man Utd will lose next week and the heat will be straight back on Amorim. They got lucky, Liverpool had plenty of chances but couldn't capitalise on any of them... You hate to see it, don't you?

  12. 'We had enough chances to score more than one goal'published at 07:35 BST

    Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It is always difficult to play against a team that defends in a low block and mainly plays the long ball. It makes it even more difficult when you go one down after one minute when one of our players are on the floor.

"If you would have told me before the game that against the low block, against so many long balls, that we would have created as many chances as we did I would have not expected us to lose. But that is what we did. We had enough chances to score more than one goal, but on the other hand again conceding two and one of the two was the set piece."

On today's defeat being a repeat of previous losses: "Yes. Of course we concede maybe one or two extra chances apart from the goals we conceded but you always have to take extra risk when you are 1-0 down. Taking that into account, we hardly conceded a chance and we are waiting for us to score a goal, we have to defend the set piece. Like against Palace and a few other moments this season, we've conceded on a set piece and that is hard to take because it is very difficult to win a game of football if you have a negative balance on set pieces."

  13. 'The biggest win in my time at Manchester United'published at 07:30 BST

    Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim speaking to Sky Sports: "I think that was the biggest win in my time at Manchester United. It means a lot today but tomorrow it won't mean a lot. It's three points and it's a good victory.

"We fought for every ball, we lost our composure in the second half but the spirit was there and that is the most important thing, if you have the spirit you can win any game.

"It was a good day and now I am concerned about Brighton. I will enjoy it but let's focus on Brighton."

On what went well: "We just saw the game and knew how important our set pieces are and the guys that have more experiences are on in the beginning.

"Every time we play in this environment well if you block well in the beginning you can feel the defence turning and we feel that in our stadium and all the big teams feel that. A good win.

"It will give us more confidence through the week and pleasure to our fans, they deserve it and that is in our hands. This is in the past now it's time to look at the future."

And here's what Sunday's result, plus the rest of this weekend's action of course, has done to the Premier League table.

Liverpool's third defeat in a row in the league has seen them fall to four points behind leaders Arsenal.

Manchester United climb to ninth, just two points behind Arne Slot's team and just the six behind the Gunners.

Harry Maguire's late header secured Manchester United's first win at Anfield in nearly a decade and inflicted Liverpool's fourth successive defeat.

Cody Gakpo's strike with 12 minutes left looked like it would end Liverpool's losing streak, only for Maguire to head beyond Liverpool keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili six minutes from time.

Gakpo scored from close range after earlier hitting the woodwork three times, but Ruben Amorim's side continued to press forward, with Maguire providing a dramatic finale.

United stunned Liverpool by taking the lead inside two minutes, although it was a moment shrouded in controversy, referee Michael Oliver letting the play go on even though Alexis Mac Allister was lying prone with a head injury after being accidentally elbowed by team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

Bryan Mbeumo was not waiting around, applying the finish past Mamardashvili, deputising for the injured Alisson.

The second half was action-packed, with Maguire's late intervention giving United their first Anfield win since January 2016, while Liverpool have lost four games in a row for the first time since November 2014, under Brendan Rodgers.

  19. Happy Mondaypublished at 07:06 BST

    Good morning!

Happy Monday, or maybe not-so if you're of a Liverpool contingent.

Certainly one if you're of a Manchester United persuasion, though.

A huge result on Sunday in the context of both of these two's seasons and we've got more talking points to get into than I can even begin to list.

We'll get into all of those as the morning goes on but first, a reminder of how it all panned out...
