The away side have shaded the opening exchanges but nothing to show for it in terms of efforts on target.

Josh Murphy's free-kick caused some consternation in the Albion defence but the resultant corner came to nothing.

Nearly a nightmare for Canaries keeper Vladan Kovacevic who gets the ball stuck under his feet and is robbed by Tommy Conway who tries to find Morgan Whittaker in the middle, only for Jose Cordoba to hack clear in the danger zone.

Down the other end and Aaron Cresswell's cross is met by the head of Ben Wilmot but his downward effort bounces into the breadbasket of keeper Gavin Bazunu.

  4. Postpublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 23 August

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Millwall

As just mentioned, it's been a dire start to the new season for last season's beaten Championship play-off finalists Sheffield United.

They could probably have picked a friendlier opponent as they look to end their run of three straight losses in league and cup this campaign.

Since 2005 the Blades have won just two of 10 home league games against Millwall.

The away side have the first effort of the match, Ryan Leonard sending a shot narrowly over the bar from range.

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Millwall

    Naz Premji
BBC Final Score commentator at Bramall Lane

Sheffield United seem to be suffering a Championship play-off final hangover.

There has been a summer of change at Bramall Lane and Ruben Selles replacing Chris Wilder was the start of a process by the new US-based owners of the club to do things their way.

So far the new boss has suffered three straight defeats in league and cup and gave a post match telling off on the pitch following a 4-1 opening day humbling by Bristol City.

Selles has also admitted that the recruitment team haven't done enough so far to replace some of the big players that have departed.

Today's visitors Millwall seem in better shape despite a surprise home defeat by Middlesbrough last time out. Alex Neil's side narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season and will be looking to go one better this time round.

On paper this looks very intriguing!

Can a new independent football regulator force the sale of a struggling club? That's what some Sheffield Wednesday fans are hoping.

The club have failed to pay wages on time for a third successive month and have been hit with several sanctions from the EFL.

The Today Programme spoke to former Home Secretary David Blunkett about the Owls' situation.

"For me it's like a Greek tragedy. I'm sad rather than angry. Going into administration would be a disaster," he said.

"I hope a sale is engineered before the regulator comes in. If they are in administration and the club is still under the existing ownership then the regulator will have to intervene."

As for the detail over how the regulator will work, Blunkett said that it would only intervene if a club's survival is directly at risk rather than being used as a way of removing owners that might happen to be unpopular with a club's fanbase.

"It won't be able to interfere if a club is being run properly so this isn't about whether we are in favour of a particular person owning or running a club, this is about whether a club can survive at all," he added.

"If you're not paying wages and the club is on the edge of going into administration, that's what the regulator is all about."

Sheffield Wednesday and Wrexham are both seeking first wins of the season, but a stroll around the Cae Ras before kick-off shows they're keen on making a point as they are gaining three.

Wednesday supporters are continuing their visual protest against owner Dejphon Chansiri by wearing black and gold colours.

But so too are hundreds of Wrexham fans, opting for last year's gold and black third strip in a show of solidarity.

It's after the club reversed their decision to ban a Wednesday banner.

Wrexham fans remember all too well difficulties before it all went Hollywood in north Wales.

I've even spotted Wednesday fans in the Wrexham shirts which were available at the club shop after owner Rob McElhenney promised profits from sales would be given to the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust.

  11. Something's gotta give...published at 14:58 British Summer Time 23 August

Wrexham v Sheff Wed (15:00 BST)

Whatever happens in this game at least one side will be ending a 100% record.

Both of these teams are played two, lost two in the Championship so far this season.

Big-spending Wrexham have fallen by the odd goal in games at Southampton and at home to West Brom, while Sheffield Wednesday (who are the opposite of big-spending as their ongoing financial concerns show no signs of ending) fell to a narrow defeat at Leicester on the opening weekend before being comprehensively beaten by Stoke last Saturday.

The Owls have made their first signing of the summer though after goalkeeper Ethan Horvath joined on Friday after Pierce Charles' shoulder injury left them without a senior keeper.

    Charlotte Richardson
BBC Final Score at St Mary's

It has been a pretty sweet start to the season for both Southampton and Stoke, unbeaten in their opening two matches.

Treats have been dispatched in the press box and what a treat we could be in store for on the pitch this afternoon. Both teams are high on confidence early on, reflected in the fact there is a solitary change across the 22 starting players.

Saints bring Nathan Wood into their line up in place of Joshua Quarshie. There is no Tyler Dibling in the hosts' squad, however. Confirmation of his impending exit to the Premier League, with a number of clubs battling to secure his signature, looks increasingly likely.

Southampton will look to continue their unbeaten run when they face early Championship pace-setters Stoke, who have history in their sights.

Saints have picked up four points from their opening two fixtures and are seeking to record back-to-back home wins for the first time since April 2024 after their late comeback against Wrexham, while the Potters will look to make it three wins on the bounce to begin the campaign.

The Potters have had the better of this rivalry of late, taking 11 points from the past six encounters with the Saints, losing only once and restricting Southampton to just two goals across that span.

Mark Robins’ side have also won on three of their past four visits to St Mary’s, drawing the other, and are seeking a fifth straight clean sheet in a particular away fixture for the first time in club history.

  14. Sky Blues looking to maintain unbeaten startpublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 23 August

    Coventry v QPR (15:00 BST)

    Frank LampardImage source, Rex Features

Coventry aim to maintain their unbeaten start to the season when they take on QPR today having begun with a 0-0 draw with Hull and a 5-3 win at Derby.

Frank Lampard’s side will be looking to go unbeaten across their opening three games of a league season for the first time since 2019-20.

The Sky Blues’ last meeting with QPR came in February with defender Bobby Thomas scoring a stoppage time header to seal a 1-0 victory at the CBS Arena.

QPR travel to the Midlands with new head coach Julien Stephan in search for his first win. He described his team as "under construction" earlier in the week and believed they performed well in the second half but needed to make a faster start in their 2-1 defeat at Watford last time out.

Stephan wants fans to be patient as he and the club carry out their project. He said any disappointing results will not reflect the ambition of the club: "When you don't have enough points you don't have to panic and just continue your process."

But as we all know this league can be unforgiving and in its relentlessness you need to get going ASAP and that’s what Hoops fans will be hoping for today.

  15. Mason staying humblepublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 23 August

West Brom v Portsmouth (15:00 BST)

    John Bennett
BBC Final Score reporter at The Hawthorns

He’s only been West Bromwich Albion head coach job for less than three months but Ryan Mason can help to claim a bit of club history today.

If they pick up all three points against Portsmouth it’ll be the first time since 1997 that the Baggies have won their first three league games of a season. But as you’d expect from a modern manager, Mason isn’t getting carried away at all.

The local media here tell me he’s playing down their excellent start and talking about staying humble. That won’t stop the home fans getting excited. The team got a great reception at the warm-up and it feels like a really positive place this afternoon.

Some home supporters I spoke to outside the ground are a bit worried though that John Swift could come back to haunt them. He starts for Portsmouth after leaving the Baggies on a free in the summer following a fairly underwhelming three-year spell here.

  16. Baggies boss Mason looks to make it three from threepublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 23 August

West Brom v Portsmouth (15:00 BST)

Ryan Mason will be very satisfied with his start to life in management.

The West Brom boss has helped his new charges to wins in their first two league outings and he'll look to make it a hat-trick today against a Portsmouth side with one win and one loss so far.

The Baggies have a good recent record against the team from the south coast, they're unbeaten in games against Pompey since February 1998.

  17. Canaries seek to slow Boro momentumpublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 23 August

    Norwich v Middlesbrough (15:00 BST)

Rob Edwards applauds Middlesbrough fansImage source, Rex Features

Liam Manning's Norwich City will go after their first home win of the season as they take on fast-starting Middlesbrough

Rob Edwards' side sit second in the Championship table after victories, and clean sheets, against Swansea and Millwall and are seeking to win their opening three games of a campaign for the first time since 1994 – when they ended up winning the title.

The omens are not great for the Canaries, who are winless across their past seven league games against Middlesbrough, earning just three points and conceding 15 goals in that spell.

Boro have also picked up eight points from their past four visits to Carrow Road, but after beating Portsmouth 2-1 last time out, City are looking to win consecutive Championship matches for the first time since February.

    Preston v Ipswich (15:00 BST)

Preston are looking for a second consecutive home win over sides relegated from the Premier League as Ipswich head to Deepdale.

Paul Heckingbottom’s men registered an impressive 2-1 win over Leicester last week while the Tractor Boys are yet to really fire after returning to the Championship, drawing 1-1 with both Birmingham and Southampton in their opening two games to extend their run of league games without a clean sheet to 21.

North End have won two of their past three league games against Ipswich, who have won on just two of their past 16 visits to Deepdale and went down 3-2 on their most recent visit to Deepdale in February 2024.

The Lilywhites have turned Deepdale into something of a fortress, losing only four home league games since the start of last season, second only to Bristol City in the division, but Kieran McKenna's men will seek to get back to winning ways today.

  19. Slow-starting Blades look to sharpen up in defencepublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 23 August

Sheff Utd v Millwall (15:00 BST)

It's been something of a false start to the season for Sheffield United.

Last season's beaten play-off finalists have lost all three of their league and Cup games and need to get things going in the right direction.

Former Everton defender Ben Godfrey has joined on a season-long loan from Atalanta and Malmo defender Nils Zatterstrom has joined for an undisclosed fee as they look to sharpen up at the back.

Millwall started the season with a solid away win at Norwich but where then thumped 3-0 at home by Middlesbrough last week.

The Lions do have a decent recent record at Bramall Lane though, they've won on four of their past six visits.
