Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings: "No excuses. I gave a poor ball away leading to the corner, didn't defend the corner very well. We couldn't get back in the game and couldn't take the chances we had. That is the fine margins of football.

"We were just not good enough.

"We will certainly take the positives that came from the game but we have to be better. We have to try to stay balanced and be the same if we won when we lose. We need a consistent mood and attitude.

"It wasn't a good night, there's not a person here who feels good about that - the fans have travelled a long way. We will go again.

"In the big moments we came out on the wrong side of them."

Liverpool have grown into this game and got stronger as the half has gone on and are asking plenty of questions of Lille.

A pretty low-key first half comes to an end and it's Liverpool who lead through Mo Salah (who else?)

Hakon Haraldsson goes down in the Liverpool box under the challenge of Curtis Jones but the midfielder did brilliantly to get a toe on the ball to poke it clear.

In fact, Haraldsson didn't even appeal for a penalty.

Lille's corner is cleared by Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool race forward through Darwin Nunez. He finds Mo Salah to his right and his trivela cross is put behind for a corner.

Pablo Barrios is sent off for Atletico Madrid for a foul on Nordi Mukiele.

It was a challenge from behind and initially given as a yellow card by the referee but after a VAR review, the initial decision is overturned.
