Thank you for joining us for what has been a rollercoaster ride of Championship action on Boxing Day.

It might not quite have been the kind of white Christmas you normally think of, but Leeds will have enjoyed the foggy evening all the same after their 2-0 win at Stoke sends them top.

Burnley closed the gap with their big victory at Sheffield United earlier on, while at the other end, Plymouth were thrashed by Coventry and eight of the bottom nine lost.

We're going to do it all again on Sunday afternoon with EFL games galore.

Even though the Championship action ploughed on into the evening, first with Derby's win over West Brom and then Leeds' victory at Stoke, the team at Opta has provided us with a pick of the statistics from the day's earlier games.

• Sheffield Wednesday are the first Championship side to avoid defeat after being at least three goals down at half-time in an away game since Swansea City at Luton Town in September 2021.
• Coventry’s 4-0 win over Plymouth Argyle is their biggest league win since March against Rotherham United (5-0), while it’s their biggest ever Football League win on Boxing Day.
• Burnley became the first visiting side to score against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the Championship since Lyndon Dykes for QPR in August, ending a run of 855 minutes for the Blades without conceding.
• Six of Liam Cullen’s eight Championship goals for Swansea this season have come since November, while it’s his joint-best tally for goals in a Championship campaign (also 8 in 2022-23).
• No player has been involved in more Championship goals this season than Middlesbrough’s Finn Azaz (17 – 8 goals, 9 assists), with this the third different game this term he’s been involved in at least three goals (2 goals, 1 assist).

Sunderland

Sunderland head coach Regis le Bris had plenty to reflect on in his post-match interview with BBC Radio Newcastle after their draw with Blackburn.

"It’s not a bad result in the end, probably the question is more about the dynamic of the game. It wasn’t our best start, we were just not at our best level but we reacted well in the second half," he said.

"We played our football, we pressed high and recovered the ball and during the second half we had many chances to score. But when you’re away with a full stadium, you know you can concede a goal at the end with high pressure.

"We have to work again on our consistency, it’s a key word for a team to be at the top of the league. We have a talented team, the question is how we can perform along (the course of) the whole league.

"They reacted well, so they have the mentality – it’s a question of starting from the beginning until the end."

Blackburn Rovers

Fifth met fourth as Blackburn entertained Sunderland at Ewood Park. And it finished with a twist as Rovers grabbed a late equaliser to claim at point after the Black Cats had come from behind to lead.

Blackburn head coach John Eustace told BBC Radio Lancashire: “I thought we played some fantastic football in the first half, it could have been more and we need to be more clinical.

"Second half we came out a little bit slow against a top team in Sunderland, you can see why they’re in the top three or four.

"When we went 2-1 down, the lads never gave up and that’s the most pleasing thing for me – we could quite easily have gone under. I’m just delighted we never gave up and came away at least with a point.

"I think that’s about the ninth goal from a substitution this season and that’s a pleasing stat – it just shows we have to use our squad.

"Every member of the squad’s very important. No matter who starts, the most important people on the pitch are those who finish and the substitutes are definitely making a difference."

Leeds have rounded off the day of Championship action by going top but we've still got some more reaction to bring you from the earlier games, particularly in the race for promotion...

Stoke's season might not be defined by defeats against sides as strong as Leeds but it was still a damaging night.

The Potters are just three points above the drop zone in 19th place and have also played a game more than Oxford, Cardiff and Plymouth - and two more than Portsmouth.

Nine games without a win (D4 L5) has seen them slip into the relegation scrap.

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu speaking to Sky Sports about his return from injury and playing 90 minutes: "It's great. Obviously it's always nice when you're on the end of a good win. Still a long way to go but we're happy with tonight."

On playing in the fog: "Maybe a couple of my misplaced passes might be due to the fog. I'm not sure.

"It was fine. Always going to be a difficult game when we come here but a fantastic win."

On winning away from home: "It's something that's hurt us players and staff. Tonight is a start and hopefully we can build on it."

Leeds goalscorer Joel Piroe speaking to Sky Sports: "It's been a fantastic night. I think it could have been more but I'm very happy with it.

"I thought this is not a chance I'm going to miss so I had to take it.

"I just want to carry on like we did today."

Confirmation of Leeds United's position at the summit of the Championship. A perfect way to spend Boxing Day for Whites fans.

Their goal difference is nine better than Sheffield United after that victory.

This is one tasty race for promotion with just one point separating the top three.

Very comfortable night, I do not think you're going to get a much more comfortable evening away from home in the Championship.

Leeds cruise to victory and in doing so, go top of the Championship.

A chorus of boos rings around the bet365 Stadium as Stoke fall to a fifth defeat in six games.

Joel Piroe's double does the job for the Whites who won't have many more comfortable nights than this and win away from home for the second time in eight matches.

Job done for Daniel Farke. Big job on his hands for Narcis Pelach.

"We're Leeds United, we're top of the league," sing the Whites contingent.

They're almost there.

Daniel Farke is about to end a losing run of his own as manager on Boxing Day too...

He has lost his past three league matches on 26 December, losing twice with Norwich (in 2019 v Aston Villa and 2020 v Watford) and last year with Leeds away at Preston.

Five minutes added on at the end of this. Seems unlikely Stoke will find a way back but you never know...

Stoke are heading for a fifth defeat in six games. It will also be no wins in nine for the Potters on a night they will want to forget.

Almost another for Leeds as Brenden Aaronson fizzes one from the edge of the box and Viktor Johansson does well to tip over the bar.

The corner then comes all the way to Mateo Joseph at the back post but it's an awkward chance and he can only lift the ball over the top.

How have Leeds only scored two tonight?

Jayden Bogle gets in down the right and tries to pick out Largie Ramazani at the back post but Stoke do well to clear inside the six-yard box.
