Amorim has actually made United worse, something no one really thought possible.

Manchester United have been terrible at conceding goals from set pieces recently.

That wasn't a goal from a set piece but it was a cross, right along a line of United defenders, straight to Aleksander Isak who, inexplicably, was unmarked and headed in.

That was awful from the home side.

  3. Postpublished at 20:08 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Aston Villa 0-1 Brighton

Better from Aston Villa as Leon Bailey wins a corner. Nothing comes from it again with Morgan Rogers throwing Lewis Dunk to the ground.

  4. Postpublished at 20:08 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Man Utd 0-1 Newcastle

The goal stands. The lines drawn by the VAR show Lewis Hall was onside when he received Bruno Guimaraes' pass.

Another early opener for the Magpies. The first minute against Ipswich, the second minute against Aston Villa and now the fourth minute against Manchester United.

Chelsea have got a free-kick in a dangerous position, 25-yards out just left of centre.

Joao Felix, Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez are having a good chin wag over it.

Pau Torres is currently receiving treatment off the pitch. Time for Tyrone Mings? Looks that way, he's getting stripped and ready on the bench.

    Alexander Isak

    Who else?!

Bruno Guimaraes sprays the ball to Lewis Hall on the left and Alexander Isak rises highest in the hosts' box to head home the full-back's whipped ball.

    VAR are checking this, though.

  9. Postpublished at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Aston Villa 0-1 Brighton

Brighton, who are winless in six, look as sharp as ever as their high press wins the ball off the Aston Villa defence yet again.

  10. Portman Road is bouncing and Ipswich are running Chelsea overpublished at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Ipswich 1-0 Chelsea

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

The Tractor Boys are on the road and Chelsea look like a rabbit in their headlights.

The intensity of Kieran McKenna's pressing is not being well handled by Chelsea - as they keep turning over possession in dangerous areas.

It has been a very sloppy start for Enzo Maresca's side after he opted to make five changes from the defeat to Fulham.

Delap, as ever, is leading the way and is looking very dangerous.

Portman Road is absolutely bouncing now as Ipswich hunt their first home win of the season.

  11. Postpublished at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Ipswich 1-0 Chelsea

VAR did have a look at the penalty and deemed the on-field decision was the correct one. It was perhaps a little fortunate but clearly the VAR couldn't disprove the referee's decision.

Liam Delap, full of confidence after scoring that penalty, gets the chance to double his side's lead but his half-volley is punched away by Filip Jorgensen.

That goal was his seventh of the season but first since 10 November.

I love the way that Liam Delap took that penalty, so much confidence in himself, just inside the post with pace and power. It's just a really well-executed penalty.

What a finish! Lewis Dunk lumps a hopeful ball forward for Joao Pedro to chase and he bundles it to Simon Adingra, who then takes a touch and curls beautifully into the far corner.

    Bright start from the Seagulls!

Perfectly dispatched penalty by Liam Delap, who fires into the back of the net and Filip Jorgensen can't get near it.

Could this turn out to be the home win Ipswich have been waiting for?!

  19. Cheer up Alan Shearerpublished at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

Man Utd v Newcastle (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at Old Trafford

A cheeky playing of The Monkees' 'Daydream Believer' in the pre-match build-up at Old Trafford.

Manchester United's fans adapted it to an anti Newcastle chant in the late 1990s when they were battling for the title with Kevin Keegan's team.

Shearer turned down a move to United earlier in his career - but didn't win a trophy during his time at Newcastle.

So 'Cheer Up Sleepy Jean' became 'Cheer Up Alan Shearer'.

  20. Postpublished at 19:56 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Aston Villa 0-0 Brighton

John McGinn just channeled his inner Lionel Messi as he skipped beyond a couple of Brighton midfielders to then free Leon Bailey. Aston Villa now have their first corner and that comes to absolutely nothing.
