Ipswich striker Liam Delap has been linked a lot with a move to Chelsea to play under his former Manchester City development manager Enzo Maresca.

Maresca was highly complimentary about his former forward ahead of kick-off.

Delap looks fired up in these opening minutes, wrestling with both Chelsea central defenders Tosin Adarabioyo and Levi Colwill.

He also got a telling off by referee John Brooks for clattering Colwill.

Chelsea will bring defender Aaron Anselmino back from Boca Juniors in January.

The 19-year-old joined Chelsea in a £15.6million summer deal but was immediately sent back on loan to the Argentine giants.

Anselmino was always potentially going to return in January but the decision has been definitively made to bring him to England in January.

It remains unclear whether Anselmino could go on another loan move within Europe, including potentially to partner club Strasbourg in France, or whether he will remain with Enzo Maresca's squad.

Maresca currently has several injuries in his back line, including Reece James, Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.

However, Anselmino also missed the last five league games of the Argentine season with a hamstring problem.

The recall will also free up an international loan spot with a limit of six players allowed to go on temporary moves overseas due to new FIFA rules.

Midfielder Cesare Casadei is among the players looking for a January loan move, with Monza and Feyenoord both interested.

Aston Villa v Brighton (19:45 GMT)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler speaking to Sky Sports: "We made a few changes because of the schedule and because the players on the bench deserved to play.

"To find one point is very difficult. We've analysed all the games and it's important to believe in the group. They deserve confidence and we try to help them. You have to work for the game and you have to deserve it.

"In the end, we want to win this game after six games of not having this feeling of a win, we have the longing and the desire to feel it again. We are very ambitious and we want to make the supporters proud and give them a present."

As it's the end of year just wanted to thank all the live reporters and those who have contributed to the live match feeds throughout the year for helping bring the football alive. As a very isolated person it’s one of the few ways to find a connection across the year, be it adding my thumbs up, reading others comments, the match reporters attempts to create conversation in the less than exciting games and feeling their joy when the matches are full of intrigue, drama and exhilarating skill. A 90 minute match and the build-up, after reactions may seem insignificant time wise to many, but it’s a valuable beam of light amidst otherwise darker skies. So thank you to all who produce, partake and share your passion, your contribution matters.

    E

What a lovely message. Thank you, E. It's easy to feel like you're speaking into the void over here but this is a great reminder of the power of football!

  20. No Duran for Villapublished at 19:37 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

Aston Villa v Brighton (19:45 GMT)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa are without striker Jhon Duran after his appeal against the red card picked up against Newcastle was rejected.

There was plenty of debate around the decision to give Duran a straight red and former England striker Alan Shearer said it was "harsh" on Match of the Day.

"It was a harsh decision. I think the referee guesses based on the reaction of the players. When Duran plants his left foot, he twists his ankle when he puts it down, which automatically pushes you to the left-hand side. He has to come back in which is why he stands on him so I think it's a harsh decision."
