  2. Jones a ‘breath of fresh air’ for England - Walkerpublished at 15:50 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2024

England defender Kyle Walker described Curtis Jones as “a breath of fresh air” in both of the matches in which the Liverpool midfielder started under interim manager Lee Carsley.

The 23-year-old scored on his senior international debut in a 3-0 victory over Greece earlier this month and also started against the Republic of Ireland as England won 5-0 to finish top of their Nations League group.

Speaking on the latest episode of the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast, the Manchester City full-back said Jones “played the game at his tempo,” adding, “when players in the past have come to the England team and got their debut, they've not really expressed themselves as what he did and I think that just shows the confidence that he's taking on from this season given the game-time that he's got at Liverpool under the new manager.”

After returning from a muscle injury in September, Jones has featured in all of Liverpool's Premier League matches and recently became a father for the first time - after which his manager said he has been "outstanding".

  3. ‘He got respect from all the lads’ – Walker on Carsleypublished at 15:50 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2024

Speaking on this week’s episode of the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast, England defender Walker said that it was “a pleasure” to work with interim England manager Lee Carsley.

Carsley won five of his six games in charge and ensured that England qualified in the top group of the Nations League. He also made some notable selection decisions during his short tenure, including leaving Walker out of the squad for games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September.

Fair credit to him, he's made some big calls in all of the camps that we've been involved in,” said the 34-year-old, adding, "leaving me out in the first one, I kind of thought, ‘oh here we go again'. He's a man that stuck to his word and he got all the respect from the lads, from the get go.”

  4. City have ‘a point to prove’ against Liverpool – Walkerpublished at 15:48 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2024

Manchester City captain Kyle Walker says that the Blues have “got a point to prove” when they travel to Anfield on Sunday to face Premier League leaders Liverpool.

“I think every year we always look forward to playing against Liverpool,” said the 34-year-old in the latest episode of the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast, adding, “a win against Liverpool at any point in the season, it’s always a statement because they're always going to be right up there. But I think especially this year where they've set off like a house on fire.”

City are currently eight points behind Arne Slot’s team, having lost their last three Premier League matches. The champions are winless in their last six matches, having lost five-in-a-row in all competitions, before surrendering a 3-0 lead at home against Feyenoord in the Champions League on Tuesday to draw 3-3.

“Liverpool are flying at the minute and it's going to be one of those games that you look forward to,” said Walker.

Jude Bellingham is a high profile player.

Everyone was really excited for him at the Euros but he dipped a little bit as did a lot of England players. I think he’s feeling a bit paranoid about that.

But when you’re a high profile player you’re judged on performances.

The Football News Show: Why Kylian Mbappe needs time to shine at Real Madrid

Forward Kylian Mbappe secured his dream move to Real Madrid in the summer but, having not made the sizzling start many were expecting at the Bernabeu, he was left out of the France squad.

France manager Didier Deschamps has said the 25-year-old was going through a difficult period, while Real boss Carlo Ancelotti said Mbappe was "down but motivated" to succeed at the La Liga giants.

Real Madrid fan Leah Revelle and European football expert Julien Laurens tell The Football News Show why Mbappe has been the victim of his own success and how he can still come good in the Spanish capital, given more time.

  9. Liverpool's best chance of beating Real Madrid in 15 years?published at 15:37 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2024

Liverpool v Real Madrid (20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool beat Real Madrid in their first three games in European competition, a run that started back in 1981.

In March 2009, the Reds enjoyed an unforgettable night as they thrashed Real 4-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

That memorable moment was their last victory over the Spanish giants, failing to win any of their last eight ties.

Liverpool welcome Real Madrid to Anfield tonight in what they may feel is their best chance to finally end that long run without a victory and continue Arne Slot's impressive start.

Despite Liverpool playing Real Madrid tonight, a team they haven’t beaten since 2009, the biggest match of the week for us is Sunday [against Manchester City in the Premier League]. Due to our performance in the Champions League so far, the pressure for points is off with only another three or four points from the remaining games needed to guarantee top eight. Is Slot going to have this in mind and be more focussed on the City game? As a Liverpool fan, I would be happy to sacrifice this evening if there was an assurance of maximum points at the weekend taking us 11 clear of City.

  12. Alexander-Arnold available to face Real Madridpublished at 15:28 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2024

Liverpool v Real Madrid (20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot says Trent Alexander-Arnold is available to face Real Madrid in the Champions League - but hopes to be in a position not to use him.

Alexander-Arnold, who has been strongly linked with a move to the defending European champions, has been out since being forced off with a hamstring injury against Aston Villa on 9 November.

The England defender, who pulled out of the recent Nations League games with the injury, trained with the Liverpool squad on Tuesday.

"Trent is in the squad but will not be available to start," said Slot.

"He can maybe make a few minutes but in an ideal world he maybe doesn't. If it's really necessary he can make a few minutes."

Alexander-Arnold, 26, is out of contract in the summer along with Egypt forward Mohamed Salah and the Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool have won all four of their Champions League games so far.

Tonight's game is a great chance for Villa to get back on track. Bit of a free hit in a way. Hopefully, Villa Park is bouncing and the players can get some confidence back.

  15. Emery tells fans to 'enjoy' Juve matchpublished at 15:23 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2024

Aston Villa v Juventus (20:00 GMT)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery wants his side to enjoy competing in the Champions League when they welcome Juventus to Villa Park on Wednesday.

Villa have not won any of their last six games in all competitions since they beat Bologna 2-0 in the Champions League last month.

On his message to supporters, Emery said: "Enjoy it. We want to enjoy competing and we want to enjoy winning. We are here in the Champions League trying to be consistent."

Juventus are 11th in the table, two points behind Villa after two wins, a draw and a defeat from their first four games.

Brendan Rodgers is urging his players to "show the power of Celtic Park" against Club Brugge, with the Champions League knockout phase within reach.

Celtic have seven points from their four outings, with the Belgians one behind after their 1-0 home win over Aston Villa.

"We're really pleased with seven out of 12 at halfway, but not just that, it's the performance level," said manager Rodgers.

"In three of the four games we've shown a really high level and the Leipzig game was the culmination of everything we would want; the physicality, pressing, aggression and also the calmness in our defending."

Celtic came from behind to overwhelm the Bundesliga side 3-1 and Rodgers wants to create a similar night for fans to enjoy.

"It's another opportunity for us to show the power of Celtic Park," he said.

"We don’t take it for granted but we want to connect with that fire, passion and emotion and bring that on to the field with a level of football that excites.

"You can see, when all of that is connected, what it brings."

Celtic have no injury or suspension concerns and may well field the same XI that started Saturday's 4-1 victory away to Hearts.

Gustaf Nilsson, Bjorn Meijer, Hugo Vetlesen and Hugo Siquet are missing for Club Brugge.

Winger Andreas Skov Olsen could feature after making a comeback from injury as a substitute at the weekend.

Ferran Jutgla and Joel Ordonez were also on the bench against Sint-Truidense and are expected to start at Celtic Park.

With regard to today’s poll I’d say the answer is neither. Liverpool far more likely to go on and win the CL than either of the others. Dare I say Villa have more chance, they have more European pedigree than Arsenal anyway.
