City have been imperious for years. But football is about fine margins. Instead of one Premier League and one Champions League, change only four results in Klopp's Anfield tenure and Liverpool have three Premier League titles and three Champions League victories. There have been times when City's dominance has been razor thin, not all consuming. Liverpool fell off a cliff after they went deep into a quadruple bid. City are suffering a similar four successive title slump. Too many games at an incredible intensity for elite players has consequences, they're not machines.

The defensive frailties, which we have probably not seen before for Manchester City, seem to be popping up in every single defeat or every single game they have played over the last six or seven.

It is probably down to individual errors as opposed to the structure they are playing. They are still controlling games like they normally do, it is just those individual errors at the moment which are killing them.

Football is cyclical. Success breeds complacency. City have become that, as our arch-rivals became after Ferguson. The bubble has burst.

  6. 'There is a hole because recruitment hasn't worked properly'published at 11:38 Greenwich Mean Time

    Man City 3-3 Feyenoord

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on Football Daily

Manchester City's recruitment [during Pep Guardiola's time at the club] has always been fantastic. They were bringing the next player through before you even knew who he was and they were hitting the ground running. They have not been able to do that of late.

They tried with Kalvin Phillips to find someone to replace Rodri - it didn't work. They brought in Savinho this season, who looks a bit like [Riyad] Mahrez but he's not. They brought in [Jeremy] Doku, who I don't think has hit the heights. Matheus Nunes was brought in for huge money - he is still developing but not ready to step into the first team.

So they are still demanding a lot of the same old players. For once in his time at Manchester City there does seem to be a bit of a hole or a gap there because all of the recruitment hasn't worked properly.

Some good news for Manchester United and new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire are both in training today ahead of tomorrow's clash with Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday night at Old Trafford.

Both have struggled with recent injuries and with Amorim set to stick with a three-man defence, having two centre-backs closer to being available again will only boost his options when it comes to team selection.

  8. Norgaard red card against Everton overturnedpublished at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time

Christian Norgaard's three-match ban, picked up following a red card for "serious foul play" while playing for Brentford against Everton on Saturday, has been overturned, the Football Association has confirmed, external.

"Christian Norgaard will be available for Brentford's next three matches following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal," said the FA in a statement.

Brentford won an appeal after Norgaard was sent off for a challenge on Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Referee Chris Kavanagh produced a red card having watched a replay of the incident on the pitchside monitor in the first half of the goalless draw at Goodison Park.

The Denmark midfielder will now be available to play in Saturday's game at home to Leicester, as well as Premier League matches at Aston Villa (December 4) and at home to Newcastle (December 7).

  9. Why do Man City fans boo the Champions League anthem?published at 11:23 Greenwich Mean Time

    Man City 3-3 Feyenoord

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester City's fans booed the Champions League anthem at the Etihad Stadium last night.

It has become normal practice and clearly is not going to change.

    The reasons are extensive.

City supporters feel their club has been singled out by Uefa over a number of issues over the years, starting way back in 2011-12 when they ended up being fined more for returning to the pitch late during their Europa League campaign than Porto were in a previous game after Mario Balotelli and Yaya Toure were racially abused.

Then fans lost money on pre-booked trips after a Champions League game at CSKA Moscow was ordered to be played behind closed doors due to the behaviour of the Russian club's supporters - only for home supporters who were linked to local junior clubs to be allowed in anyway.

On top of that, Uefa fined City €49m for breaking financial rules - and then came a two-year ban from European competition over further financial breaches. This was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

  12. Sunday's trip to Liverpool 'couldn't be better timed in terms of the drama'published at 10:59 Greenwich Mean Time

    Man City 3-3 Feyenoord

    Conor McNamara
BBC Radio 5 Live commentator on Football Daily

This isn't what normally happens to Pep Guardiola. In his managerial career, he has never thrown away a three-goal lead. It is the first time it has ever happened.

In the Champions League, no team has ever been three goals or more behind going into the 75th minute of a match and not lost that game. Feyenoord have created some Champions League history.

As delighted as they will be, and as well as they have taken their goals, the story has to be Manchester City. This team that used to just show up and intimidate teams the minute they walked out of the dressing room have lost that veneer now. How do you get that back?

Pep Guardiola faces an enormous challenge now and of course the context of what comes next on Sunday [with a trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool] couldn't be better timed in terms of the drama.

  16. FA investigates referee Coote over booking claimspublished at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time

The Football Association says it is investigating an allegation that referee David Coote discussed giving a yellow card with a fan before a Championship match.

Coote, 42, says he denies the new claims and calls them "false and defamatory allegations".

The referee is already under investigation by the FA and has been suspended by refereeing body the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and European football's governing body Uefa following separate allegations about his conduct.

A new report in the Sun newspaper on Tuesday claimed Coote exchanged messages with a fan discussing giving a yellow card before and after a game between Leeds and West Brom in 2019.

The exchange refers to a booking Leeds defender Ezgjan Alioski received in the match from Coote. There is no suggestion of any financial gain by Coote and the booking is regarded as entirely correct.

The contents of the report have not been verified by the BBC.

Man City are a system based team where the team is more than the individual players. When a couple of components fail, the system fails and we have 11 blokes wandering around lost. Pep will sort it but it'll take a while. It'll need considerable mental strength from the players.
