On the irritation with TAA potentially leaving Liverpool, I think the bad feelings are due to who he might move to. To move to a European rival who Liverpool have lost trophies to in recent years adds a feeling of betrayal that wouldn't be there if he moved to another team such as Bayern.

As a Sunday morning player another team in our town playing in a higher league and regular cup winners wanted me to leave my side and join them, they offered to pay my subs, with free beer and sausage and chips after the games. Tempted as I was I decided to stick with my mates but can understand how some may have been swayed.

    Did he mean it?!

Sandro Tonali's winner was something special. Lobbing the keeper and finding the top corner from an improbably tight angle on the right wing.

Tonali later explained in a television interview that his effort was "70% cross and a 30% shot".

"It was difficult for the goalkeeper and difficult also for me," said the former AC Milan midfielder. "Also a little bit of luck."

"Tonali has a thunderbolt of a strike when he does go for goal," said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Wayne, Walsall: Phil, Do you think that Klopp announcing his retirement so early had a major factor on the “Big 3” delaying in signing new contracts? I certainly wouldn't be signing a new contract knowing my manager was leaving and not knowing if the new manager had me in their plans.

They – and of course we mean Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold – may have waited to see who the new manager was, and how his methods work, but that time frame was very small, it was effectively known before Klopp left, and they clearly all bought into Arne Slot very quickly.

I have a feeling Alexander-Arnold may have been looking at possibly leaving anyway, but I do not think it would have had any impact on the other two whatsoever once it became clear it was all working well under Slot.

I am very surprised it has been as drawn out as it has been, but of course we do not know what is going on backstage at Anfield or even what those players might want in their new contracts to stay.

I think the fact that Salah and Van Dijk are coming up 33 and 34 respectively may have been factors with owners FSG, but do not believe Klopp’s decision has played any part.

As an LFC fan I don't begrudge Trent a move to Madrid but what does irritate me and probably most LFC fans is that he's doing it in a way that LFC get no transfer fee. That's his right to do but as a local lad I think that's a poor decision on his behalf and makes it harder for LFC to replace him.

So, how'd Newcastle get on last night?

Sandro Tonali scored an incredible winner to boost their hopes of a place in the Champions League as the Magpies tasted victory in their first game since lifting the Carabao Cup.

Alexander Isak's 20th Premier League goal of the season put Eddie Howe's side ahead, but Bryan Mbeumo equalised from the penalty spot after Nick Pope's foul on Yoane Wissa changed the mood inside St James' Park.

However, Tonali's cross-shot from close to the right corner flag left Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken red-faced and ensured Newcastle remained very much in the mix for a top-four finish.

'Best player? I’m not so sure'published at 12:25 British Summer Time 3 April

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty

Anon: Hi Phil. If Mohamed Salah stays at Liverpool and breaks Shearer’s record, would you make him the best ever player to have played In the Premier League? Considering he's not an out and out striker.

It would make him the best goalscorer, but best player? I’m not so sure.

There are so many factors to take into consideration and highest goalscorer, does not always equate to the best player. I’d have Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne right in that conversation as a scorer of goals, a creator of goals and the heart of the best team of the recent Premier League era.

But not before then. I'm not that foolish!

Re 12:12 You can’t leave us hanging like that Joe, who was it! The player departure that hurt me the most was when Juan Mata left Chelsea to join United, devastating for our back to back player of the year to be cast out like that!

If Liverpool fans are this upset that TAA is leaving why aren’t they this passionate about their club buying players, it’s the same principle. Players move on, no matter the team or how much you want them to stay.
