Just arrived at my parents having driven from Devon before heading to Goodison tonight. I've been going since the 70s and my dad who is 87 since the early 50s when he'd go to Goodison one week and Anfield the next with his red pal. There's been loads of wonderful Goodison derbies but mid week under the lights, well, there's nothing like it - and I've seen football all over the world. But the 4-4 in 1989 when I used to travel back from Uni and stood with my dad on the Gwladys Street was both electric and crazy. So that's the best....until tonight! It will be very emotional.

One of my first and worst memories was Bradford City beating us in FA Cup in 1997. A team of a young Schwarzer in goal and Andy O'brien in defence. They scored 2 early second half goals to go 3-1 up. The last, a delicious lob from a certain Chris Waddle over Southall after a soon to depart Kanchelskis gave the ball away. The sight of 6,000 ecstatic Bradford fans was enough to make a 9 year old me burst into tears! Years of torment to follow!

    Celtic

Celtic defender Auston Trusty speaking in the pre-match news conference before tonight's fixture against Bayern Munich: "For me to have this opportunity to be playing Bayern Munich at Celtic Park with the fans and the amazing environment and all that, it's what dreams are made of.

"I back this team with everything. When we're on it and have the right mindset, I would truly back us against anyone.

"We're at home. There's no reason to play with fear, there is nothing to lose, we can only gain. If we go out there and do our thing, I truly believe we can get a result that's in our favour."

Goodison Park Dec-2023 League Cup Qtr Final vs Fulham. I just knew where my seat was going to be when I saw this pillar…..and we lost on penalties. I’m not usually an emotional person but Goodison Park just before kick off gets me every single time.

My dad is Liverpool through and through but has many fond memories of Goodison in the 60s. None more so than Portugal vs North Korea in the world Cup. He still raves about watching Eusebio score 4!

  7. More goals make Maeda 'really special'published at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February

Celtic v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

Daizen Maeda's hat-trick against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup at the weekend took his tally for the season to 21, his most productive in Scotland to date.

Not bad for a player who has played out wide for most of the season.

Three of those goals have come in the Champions League, including a brilliant curling effort to snatch a critical point against Club Brugge.

Finishing was always a criticism of Maeda. Not that he lacked the ability to score good goals, but that he was guilty of some glaring misses.

But this season his shot conversion rate has gone up from 13% to 22% in the Scottish Premiership, and his strikes have come in all different forms.

Against Rovers he was so sharp in the penalty box for his hat-trick, but against Dundee last week he scored a sublime chip.

With that in mind, Rodgers now has a decision to make for the visit of Bayern. Should Maeda play as the central striker, with Kyogo now gone and no direct replacement brought in?

I’m a Liverpool fan but my best mate at school was an Evertonian. His brother organised coach trips to Goodison for the local supporters group so I’d get the odd spare ticket. I remember going in ‘96 (v Sheffield Wed) as my first game there. The programme featured David Unsworth and had a fact file in him. One stat was he’d never missed a penalty…sure enough Everton got one and he stepped up only to miss it (I think he hit the bar!). My first game at Goodison was actually Brazil v Japan in 95 in the Umbro Cup. A 3-0 win for Brazil and saw Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo, Zinho, Jorginho too. Great memories.

    • Celtic have faced Bayern Munich on four previous occasions in European competition, going winless across all four in the group stages of the Champions League (D1 L3).
    • Bayern Munich are unbeaten in their past 13 matches against Scottish sides in major European competition (W9 D4), with their last such defeat coming against Hearts in the Uefa Cup in February 1989 (1-0).
    • Celtic have won just one of their 12 Champions League/European Cup clashes with German opposition (D3 L8), although that victory did come in the most recent one, against RB Leipzig in November.
    • Bayern Munich have lost three of their four away matches (W1) in the Champions League this season. Should Celtic earn a victory here, it would be the first time the German side have lost four away games in a single campaign in major European competition.
    • Only five midfielders have played every minute for their teams in the Champions League this season (720), two of which play for clubs involved in this game: Callum McGregor for Celtic and Joshua Kimmich for Bayern Munich.

How highly would a Celtic win rate in all time Scottish results In knockout rounds in Europe? It would be up there with the Lisbon lions, Aberdeen beating real Madrid in 83, Rangers beating Bayern in 72, Dundee Utd beating Barcelona in 87.

The best match I ever went to, was the Goodison derby in October 1985. I was a Liverpool fan in the Park End terrace which was heaving. Dalglish scored after 30 seconds in front of the Gwladys Street and you could see how many Liverpool fans were in there due to the number of red bobble hats that suddenly all jumped up at the same time. Liverpool were three up by half-time. Kendall then took a defender off and went three up front. Everton battered us second half and got back to 3-2 but couldn’t find an equaliser. And there was still time for two Liverpool quick counter-attacks, both of which ended with Kenny fluffing chances that even I could have scored. Bobby Robson was there in his role as England manager, and he also said it was the best match he’d ever been to.

  15. 'Suddenly they look a more positive, confident team' - Moyes' returnpublished at 15:16 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February

    Everton v Liverpool (19:30 GMT)

    Ray Houghton
Former Liverpool midfielder on the Goodison's Greatest Derbies podcast

In the space of three or four weeks, [David Moyes] has revived a team that just looked completely down. They weren’t scoring goals, they weren’t creating chances, there was no positivity whatsoever around the team. Sean Dyche had run out of steam, I don’t think he could find a way to revitalise the team or inspire them. Their goalscoring record was awful and yet in their last two home games against Spurs and against Leicester on Saturday, they have been 3-0 up by half-time.

Suddenly they look a more positive, confident team and the players who didn’t look like they were up to much under Sean Dyche, suddenly look better. I do think Everton will enter this derby in a far more optimistic mood than they would have done when the first game was scheduled. The landscape has changed as far as Everton is concerned completely over the last three or four weeks.

They always go into the derby thinking they’ve got a fighting chance. Their record says that at Goodison Park and I think there will be a real mood of optimism. Liverpool will be confident as well so it is all set up for a really big atmosphere and a fantastic final to Goodison Park hosting derby games.

Been following EFC since I was 10 now 53 and seen a lot of games, highs and lows in those years. Maybe tonight we can get Goodison rocking and Liverpool will play their part in a great game, that we win.

  20. 'Anything is possible' - Rodgers bullish before Bayern matchpublished at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February

Celtic v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

    Celtic

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says his side must be "alive in the tie" after the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Bayern Munich.

The German outfit lead the Bundesliga by eight points and have scored 65 goals in 21 league outings, but had an up-and-down league stage in European competition, losing three of their eight games and finishing outside the top eight.

Rodgers knows the task that awaits his side but is nonetheless bullish about Celtic's prospects, certainly in front of their own fans.

"Bayern Munich are one of the giants of the European game," he said. "They really are football royalty in terms of what they've achieved over many, many years at this level.

"For us to be in a position where we can challenge them is a great marker for us. I know with our game, all our running power and physicality – which is something we're really improved on at this level – then anything is possible.

"What is important for us is that we're very much alive in the tie going over to Germany. We want to go and perform. We're not frightened to lose. If we can perform well, as we've shown in this competition especially at home, hopefully we can get what we deserve."
