1. 'Madrid players now realise how nervous City are'published at 10:55 Greenwich Mean Time

    Man City 2-3 Real Madrid

    Manuel Sanchez
Spanish football journalist on the Football Daily podcast

I think Real Madrid have taken a lot of pressure off themselves with the win. I think it will boost the confidence of the players a lot. They needed this.

It has always been difficult for the Madrid mindset to get this kind of victory against Pep Guardiola when he was at both Barcelona and Man City. I think the players needed this and the fans needed this because they wanted this kind of victory against Guardiola and having the second leg at home now is a big advantage for them.

I think the Madrid players have realised now how bad that City are at defending and how badly they handle their nerves at this moment. The level of confidence of Man City right now is so low and they need to smell that blood and come for it and I think they will go for it in the second leg as well.

Nothing worse than a soft apple. A great coach is someone who is a serial winner, a great manager is someone who can make the most out of a depleted squad and still contend. Klopp, Mourinho, Fergie, Wenger…and I’d say up and coming for that list is Nuno. It’s the ability to inspire an underdog team to victory. Pep is a master tactician, but he isn’t the best manager.

For Jack Grealish to get the nod, I mean, I was surprised. He started just based on his performance as this season.

So, you know, gets the nod and then had a part in the Manchester City goal, didn't he? Wonderful.

Ball into Gvardiol and down in Haaland, finished. And then a few minutes later, he comes off, which pretty much summed up his season, really.

He can't find a rhythm. Let's hope he has a possibility of making the second leg.

Hang on a second, Nottingham Forest lost to Fulham 1-0 this season.

Borussia Dortmund did at least knock out Malaga, although they needed two very late goals to win 3-2.

Dortmund's tifo for the 2012-13 Champions League QF second leg vs Malaga is easily the best ever. Still gives me goosebumps watching the video on YouTube.

The average age of Manchester City's starting XI in the 2015-16 season (season before Pep Guardiola) was 30.0. Only Watford (30.1) and West Brom (30.9) played teams with a average higher age that season.

Re: Rob Rubbish. Pep inherited an ageing team when he became Man City manager. He rebuilt the squad after his first season then became centurions, and winning lots of trophies since. He now knows another rebuild is required which started last month. He is still the man for me!

After Kai Havertz, who do Arsenal have left who can play up front?

Arsenal are assessing striker Kai Havertz after he suffered a muscle injury on the team’s Dubai training camp.

It is not yet known how bad the injury is and whether the Germany forward will miss any games.

Manager Mikel Arteta will be asked about the extent of the injury at Friday’s news conference.

The Gunners are already missing Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka with hamstring injuries, and striker Gabriel Jesus is out for the rest of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Arteta spoke of his “disappointment” at not being able to sign attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window, with an offer for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins rejected.

Arsenal flew out for warm-weather training last Thursday after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup semi-final by Newcastle. They were not involved in this weekend’s FA Cup fixtures following their third round defeat to Manchester United.

Last season, after a similar break Arsenal went on to win 16 of their next 18 games.

I feel Man City need an injection of youth, energy and fearlessness. They produce these young players that end up smashing it at other clubs. Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer come to mind.

Manchester City defender Ruben Dias says their defeat by Real Madrid was "frustrating" but remains hopeful that they can turn it around in the second leg provided they show belief.

After hosting Newcastle in the Premier League at the weekend, City travel to the Bernabeu Stadium next Wednesday needing a win to keep their Champions League dreams alive.

After succumbing to Real in the final minutes of the first leg, Dias told BBC Radio Manchester: "I am just upset with it and of course it is frustrating.

"It is always going to be a different kind of game against them. In the end, there were chances both ways and we ended up playing the last minutes at 2-1. But you cannot let it [the lead] go, the way that we did. We have to do better and it is as simple as that. You cannot allow it.

"Now it is a matter of belief - how much we do believe in ourselves and in that we can go through.

"We know the game that we are going to have to go there and play because we have been there before. "
