What's Craig's game plan when the ball gets into the box. How far can you lean left before your head hits that wall?

Or do you lean to the right and end up in the lap of the person next to you?

Watching the last Goodison Derby in Qatar. Beers chilled, Schwarma ordered, days leave booked for tomorrow. And it looks like, even being 3500 miles away, I’ll still have a better view than poor Craig there! COYB!!

5 years ago - Florian Lejeune scoring twice for Newcastle 94th & 95th minute to get 2-2, don't think that is high on any Everton fans list!

Everton fan Mike, who has been going to Goodison for 23 years: “Any game now is a countdown towards the last game here at Goodison Park. It is hugely important game and we are the original club on Merseyside. It is always nice to get one over on our rivals, but it would be especially nice on Wednesday considering the season they are having.

"They lost the league at Goodison Park many times, last season and 2019 too. There were not many positives last season but beating them with such a powerful display was beautiful. We are not going to have too many more games under the lights at Goodison so hopefully we can say goodbye to the Grand Old Lady in style.

“It has been tough going the last few seasons but I was 14 years old when we beat them in the Lee Carsley derby and it was fun going into school the next day. Then it was a while until the Dan Gosling one. We can pin-point the derby wins here. We have not beaten them a huge amount at Goodison but hopefully that will change when we get to the new stadium.”

On my break I was trawling through football twitter (forgive me) and came across a video where somebody was getting a haircut in the stands at the Etihad last night.

Today Manchester City sources told BBC Sport the hair clippers were confiscated.

But it's got me thinking, what's the oddest thing you've seen at a football match?

  9. 'Once it left my boot, I knew it was in' - Sheedy's free kickpublished at 13:59 Greenwich Mean Time

    BBC World Service - Sportsworld

    Everton

Former Everton midfielder Kevin Sheedy on his free kick he had to take twice and scored twice v Ipswich (FA Cup 6th round,1985): "Most Evertonians of that era, when they speak to me, always remember that goal. I practised my free kicks all the time because when you’ve got 45,000 people chanting your name, you'd better be able to deliver.

"I got on the ball early. Paul Cooper was lining his wall up but he weren't set. I just took a free kick and bent it in his top right hand corner expecting the referee to disallow it, which he did, so I replaced the ball. Peter Reid, who scored one goal in his career, said to me, “What are we going to do now?” So I told him politely to get out the way, I'll put it in the other side.

"So Paul Cooper had edged over because he knew I could put it in his top right hand corner and left a nice little gap to his left side. So I knew if we could get it up and over the ball with a bit of spin away from him, I have a chance to score and once it left my boot and I knew it was in.

"Nestled nicely in his bottom left hand corner. So again the atmosphere after that was fantastic. So a personal memory but also a memory for the supporters as well."

UEFA European Cup Winners Cup Final - Everton v Rapid Vienna - Kevin SheedyImage source, Getty Images

Former Everton midfielder Kevin Sheedy on the second leg of Cup Winners Cup semi final v Bayern Munich in 1985: "I think you know when people ask you, “What's the best atmosphere you played in?” I have to say semi final against Bayern Munich of Goodison Park. When you hit the top step and came out for the game. It was a night game and it was just unbelievable. They scored just before half time and you could hear a pin drop.

"Second-half, we're going towards the Gwladys Street and Howard Kendall just had said a few words at halftime. Nothing really because it wasn't much in the game and he just said “Just get at them 2nd half and the Gwladys Street will suck the goals in”.

"And we scored two within about seven minutes and turned the game right on his head, and then we got the third later on the game, Trevor Steven scored a great goal and it just brought the house down and it's something, you know, I've been fortunate playing big stadiums all over the world, but just that atmosphere always lives there. Anybody that was there player wise, supporter wise will always remember that atmosphere."

    Everton

Everton fan Jackie who has been coming to Goodison for 47 years: "It would be amazing to finish here with a win and to go into the new ground on the back of that. A win would be nice because they [Liverpool] are the leaders too and it might stop them from winning the league like last season.

"The chant from last season “You lost the league, at Goodison Park” will come out again on Wednesday. My first game was in 1978 and they were the glory years for the club and have been through a rough patch since then.

“The memories of the derby here are not very good, but there have been a lot of draws, that is better than a loss. We don’t make it easy for them and things have definitely improved under David Moyes, the players have started playing for the shirt again. They have pride in playing again and we have our old Everton back, that is all I ever wanted.”

Phil has been going to Goodison since the early '60s: “I will feel emotional at the game on Wednesday, remembering all of the great players I have seen in a blue shirt over the course of the 60 years I have been coming to Goodison. I am fervently hoping the team can give us a win that will honour the blues of the past. If we do win, it will be remembered for a very long time.

“A bad memory from derbies at Goodison is from 1982 when defender Glenn Kealey was signed from Blackburn and given his debut against Liverpool and was sent off after half an hour. We ended up losing 5-0 and what made it worse I was sitting next to a Red. It was the longest afternoon of my life!

"The good memory is from 1994, Joe Royle’s first game as manager and bottom of the league with only one win all season. Liverpool were near the top but we won 2-0 with Duncan Ferguson’s first goal for Everton and ended up winning the FA Cup at the end of the season.”

Evertonian Guy and son Sammy: “A win on Wednesday would go down in history, I think we will stay in the league by the end of the season but to sign off with a win is something I cannot put into words. Just beating them on any occasion is amazing but to beat them on Wednesday would be immense. It would also mean bragging rights this side of the city.

“The memory of playing Liverpool here last season is good, but we have not had a good time of it over the years. It has been tough. To move the club forward with the new owners, things are stable for the first time in a long time and we are moving in the right direction.

"I was happy getting David Moyes in, we were here for the third round game against Peterborough when Sean Dyche got sacked and I wanted Moyes in then.”

Favourite Goodison memory - Dan Gosling scoring in the 118th minute in the FA Cup fifth round replay. I was in the Gwladys Street end. Not only did I end up in a seat about 20 down in the celebrations, I think we were on an entirely different row!

Former Everton midfielder Dan Gosling on people missing his goal because of an ad-break on TV: "All the way to the final beaten by Chelsea in that final. It was a very magical moment for everyone here at Goodison Park. But was actually missed by several fans watching on television. That television company cut away to a scheduled ad break and some people in the country didn't get to see the goal.

"Including my mum. The TV came on when there was a big pile on, and she was waiting to see where I was and fortunately enough, I was right at the bottom of it. One by one, the lads got off and there I was and then she found out I was the goal scorer.

"It was a mixed feeling for her. Obviously 20 seconds, probably of unsure and and who scored it. It came to light and it was me. So yeah, great times."

Former Everton midfielder Dan Gosling on his FA Cup fourth round replay winner for Everton over Liverpool in 2009: "It was an unbelievable feeling and one that I will never forget. I mean, you have moments in football and and that was probably my moment in my time so it’s a great, great memory. It's just a shame we didn't end up lifting the trophy. That's my only regret of that."

    Ray Houghton
Former Liverpool midfielder on the Goodison's Greatest Derbies podcast

[Goodison Park] is an iconic old stadium. I’m going to be sad when it goes. There are far too many of the old stadiums that we are not seeing anymore. We are losing a bit of the history and the atmosphere as well. It is such a tight, compact ground. You felt like the fans were virtually on top of you going down the wing.

If you were an away player going to Goodison, let me tell you those home supporters told you if you were doing good, bad or indifferent. It was a very unique place to go and it was somewhere that when you won, especially for me scoring on my debut, it was a tremendous feeling. To come off after getting a victory, to have bragging rights for a few weeks was brilliant.

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was on the blue side of the fence when the Reds last won at Goodison Park in 2021.

Jurgen Klopp's side had won only once on their previous nine visits to Everton but a rapid start put them on the road to victory, with Jordan Henderson and Diogo Jota scoring either side of a Mohamed Salah double.

Given his history at Anfield, Benitez was never going to be a popular choice. The defeat was the Toffees' eighth game without a win, and fans made their feelings known with a banner that read: "We demand nil satis nisi optimum (nothing but the best is good enough). It's about time out club did too".

  20. Who will end with most Goodison derby wins?published at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time

    Everton v Liverpool (19:30 GMT)

The overall balance of power is remarkably tight in the fixture given it has been played since 1894.

The Toffees won the first derby match at Goodison and will hope to bookend their home matches against Liverpool with another victory on Wednesday to take them one clear in the list of total wins.

Across the 119 games, Everton have scored 141 goals while Liverpool have netted 147 times.

Although the Reds have seen more success generally than their city rivals in the 21st century, they have often found Goodison Park a difficult place to go.

Of the past 12 derbies held there, nine have been draws with two Liverpool wins and one Toffees success - a 2-0 victory last season that dented Jurgen Klopp's hopes of winning the Premier League.
