  2. Medical team to assess Timber after U23s outingpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 22 April

Arsenal v Chelsea (Tue, 20:00 BST)

    Arsenal

In terms of team news, Mikel Arteta had no specific injury updates, with all the players he had available against Wolves seemingly fit to play at home to Chelsea on Tuesday.

However, there was some discussion about a possible return for Dutch full-back Jurrien Timber, who is due to play for the under-23s against Blackburn tonight as he steps up his recovery from a serious knee injury.

Arteta said he would see how his summer signing from Ajax responded to that run-out.

The 22-year-old played for the Gunners in their Community Shield win over Manchester City and managed just 50 minutes of their Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest.

Serie A side Udinese have appointed Italy World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro as their new head coach until the end of the season.

The 2006 Ballon d'Or winner, 50, replaces Gabriele Cioffi after a run of four losses in five games.

Saturday's 1-0 loss at Verona leaves Udinese 17th, with only goal difference keeping them out of the relegation zone.

Cannavaro played for Parma, Juventus, Inter Milan and Real Madrid among others in a glittering playing career.

Having coached in China, his most recent managerial role was with Serie B side Benevento last season.

His first game as Udinese boss will be against Roma on Thursday.

  4. 'What Pochettino has done is really impressive'published at 14:53 British Summer Time 22 April

Arsenal v Chelsea (Tue, 20:00 BST)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made clear his admiration for Mauricio Pochettino, his opposite number at Chelsea, saying that he was "hugely impressed" with the job he had done at Stamford Bridge since his arrival in the summer.

He said: "They should be in a much higher position in the league when you look what they have done in matches. They have reached a final of one cup competition [the Carabao Cup] and semi-final of another [the FA Cup] and could have been through in that one too.

"What he has done is really impressive and sure he is going to get them there."

Arteta added: "The London derby is a massive game for us and have we to prepare in the best possible way."

  6. 'We want to give it a real go'published at 14:39 British Summer Time 22 April

Arsenal v Chelsea (Tue, 20:00 BST)

    Arsenal

More from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on the impact of Saturday's win at Wolves on their title ambitions: "It really meant a lot to us. We have been in a great position in the Premier League over the past nine months. We want to give it a real go and are really determined [to carrying on challenging] while it is still in our hands to try to lift the trophy.

"Tomorrow we will have another tough opponent in front of us and we will try to win again.

"But [the title race is] dependant on another two teams [Liverpool and Manchester City] as well. They are two of the best teams in the history of this league, so this is where we are."

  7. 'We have all been there'published at 14:36 British Summer Time 22 April

Arsenal v Chelsea (Tue, 20:00 BST)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Nottingham Forest's statement on X about the standard of refereeing in their defeat at Everton: "I am not involved in that...I have already been involved in a few and nothing for me to comment on."

He added: "[We are] all trying to improve the game in the best possible way.

"We are all aligned - things are going to happen and will in the future. When it touches you it is very difficult, so I have to sympathise on that as we have all been there."

Three late goals conceded - one penalty missed - which we simply cannot accept. We warned United that Erik ten Hag isn't good enough but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. United should now consider their options.

  9. 'Chelsea squad quality is great'published at 14:30 British Summer Time 22 April

Arsenal v Chelsea (Tue, 20:00 BST)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on the prospect of facing a Chelsea side without Cole Palmer: "I have no control over that, only on my players who are available. Whatever they [Chelsea] put out there, when you look at the squad quality they have is great. They are doing very well, they have good results recently and have been playing much better than their place in the table suggests. It will be a tough match tomorrow, for sure."

On the respect he has for Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino and similarities between Arsenal and Chelsea: "The journey of the clubs is very different. There is nothing to compare them, in my opinion.

"Pochettino, I know him for 23 years. He is a huge leader and will take the club [Chelsea] where they need to get, for sure."

  10. 'Arsenal will be happy and relieved'published at 14:28 British Summer Time 22 April

    Wolves 0-2 Arsenal

    Simon Grayson
Ex-Sunderland manager on the Football Daily podcast

Arsenal showed a lot of mental strength. They could have had a harder fixture with how depleted Wolves were with the injury situation, but Wolves played really well.

They were good out of possession, on the counter-attack and defended the 18-yard box well.

Arsenal just scored at the right time. They took the wind out of the sails of Wolves two minutes before half-time. Then, in the second half, they really upped the ante.

It felt inevitable it would be 2-0 very soon but Wolves withstood that and created one or two half opportunities and got into some good positions without really working David Raya. Then Arsenal hit them on the counter and put the game to bed.

Arsenal will be happy and relieved. On the other side of it, Gary O'Neil will be really happy with Wolves' performance and the heart, spirit and desire his team showed.

  11. 'I had to stop them' - Arteta on squad before Chelsea gamepublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 22 April

Arsenal v Chelsea (Tue, 20:00 BST)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on his side's readiness to face Chelsea after winning their last game at Wolves: "We are keeping on doing what we have been doing - focussing on the next game and the task ahead, preparing really well - as we have done in the time we have had available to us. The boys look ready to go again.

"Wolves was a good test to see how they reacted [to defeat in the Champions League] - how much we want it and how we are capable of doing it. Certainly the team did that."

On whether key players like Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are suffering from burnout due to the tough schedule: "When I see them this morning they looked good because I had to stop them. Winning gives a big boost of energy, we have a London derby to look to and everyone is ready for it.

"The amount and volume of games is not for me in this moment to look at that. We have to think is a positive way, but for sure something needs to be done."

  13. Phil McNulty Q&A - will tribalism stop VAR progress?published at 14:22 British Summer Time 22 April

#bbcfootball, WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Tom, Manchester: Hi Phil! Where was the uproar when United had a similarly tight offside call go against them when Garnacho scored late on against Arsenal earlier in the season? Is there maybe a feeling that tribalism will prevent any positive change on VAR as fans will fluctuate on it depending on if it goes for or against them?

Hello Tom. Yes, I was there at Arsenal and that was very tight and I think, for all the emotion surrounding Coventry, most accepted that was the correct call yesterday - by “a toenail” as Coventry City manager Mark Robins said afterwards.

I think fans will always fluctuate, we are fans after all, but I don’t think tribalism will prevent positive change. It certainly shouldn’t do.

FA Cup: Man City 1-0 Chelsea

FA Cup: Man City 1-0 Chelsea

    Luke Edwards
Daily Telegraph writer on the Football Daily podcast

By their very, very high standards they were poor [in their victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final]. They didn't really click in the final third at all.

I haven't seen a City side misplace as many passes as they did against Chelsea. I think the fatigue [playing just three days after their Champions League defeat against Real Madrid] is as much mental as it is physical.

But you have to admire the mentality. It would have been quite easy with the game going against them and Chelsea playing well to be overrun, but they weren't.

You can only really pat City's players on the back.

They've won everything - they won the Treble last year. The FA Cup is probably their third priority of the season and they still managed to grind out a result.

  16. Phil McNulty Q&A - Grealish lucky not to concede penalty?published at 14:13 British Summer Time 22 April

Chris from Whelford: Hi Phil, a very simple question and one which everyone seems to be ignoring why was the Wan-Bissaka penalty a penalty and the Jack Grealish handball not a penalty?

A very simple answer from me, Chris. I don’t know. They both looked clear penalties to me. There must be some reason why Grealish’s was not. How could VAR not even recommend a look at the screen? There was some talk of it being a downward movement from Grealish but that was a penalty all the way in my opinion.

Controversy aside, how good is it to see Trent back playing for Liverpool. They missed him (Jota too). More importantly, it gives Gareth Southgate a dilemma about how to integrate TAA into the England squad. I’d love to see him in the starting XI, but how do you fit him into midfield with the likes of Bellingham, Foden, Saka, Rice etc. Unless you drop Saka and put TAA on the right? A good dilemma to have at least.

  18. Phil McNulty Q&A - should Liverpool cash in on Salah?published at 14:07 British Summer Time 22 April

Liverpool's Mohamed SalahImage source, Getty Images

Micky T, Lancaster. Liverpool fan: Liverpool were putting in some impressive performances and were scoring 3 goals nearly every game with a team full of youngsters because of injury problems to star players. Their downturn in form appeared to arise when said stars returned. Do you think Mo Salah’s selection creates an imbalance? Do you think Salah is past his most exciting best and at 31 has he lost motivation? Is now the time to cash in on Salah with Middle East money available?

Morning, Micky. I had this question last week from a couple of Liverpool fans who wondered whether it was time to sell Mohamed Salah.

I can certainly see the financial logic with Salah being 32 in the summer and entering the final year of his contract but it would be a huge decision to sell someone who, when even not at his best, would probably guarantee you 20 goals a season. It might be logical financially but that would be a huge footballing decision.

I think he probably is just a little past his best but that does not mean he is anything other than still an outstanding player. I genuinely don’t believe he has lost motivation. He has not quite been at his peak since sustaining a hamstring injury but I don’t think he creates an imbalance and I wouldn’t bet against Salah making a significant contribution in the closing weeks of the season.

  19. Seventh may be enough for Europepublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 22 April

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

The FA Cup semi-finals over the weekend have brought greater clarity to English clubs' chances of European qualification this season.

With a fifth Champions League spot looking highly unlikely, the FA Cup winners and fifth-placed team in the Premier League would go into the Europa League.

If Manchester City win the FA Cup, their Europa League slot would go to the sixth-placed team, with the seventh going into the Europa Conference League.

Manchester United are presently seventh. If they stay there and win the FA Cup, they would go into the Europa League, with the sixth-placed team going into the Europa Conference League.

England will not get an extra Europa League place if Aston Villa effectively qualify twice by finishing fifth and winning the Europa Conference League.

  20. Phil McNulty Q&A - did Haaland & De Bruyne throw in the towel?published at 13:59 British Summer Time 22 April

Manchester City's Erling HaalandImage source, Getty Images

Anon: Phil, did Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne throw the towel in when asking to be subbed off against Real Madrid? And effectively Pep Guardiola did too for allowing it? I can’t imagine they would have given up had they not achieved the Champions League holy grail last season. And what are implications for the Premier League race? Is City’s cup still full?

Not a chance. Players of their calibre and pedigree do not “throw in the towel". Pep Guardiola said Erling Haaland had a muscle injury and he was not able to figure in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea while Kevin de Bruyne was exhausted, with his fitness having to be managed carefully. It’s the last thing they would have wanted to do.

I don’t think City’s exit from the Champions League will have huge implications on their attempt to win the Premier League – and of course they still have a domestic double to aim for with the FA Cup final against Manchester United to come.
